I once worked in a well-known restaurant in my city. Every morning when i report for work, i always find on counters, kitchen area, and dinning area "left over" from rats and cockroaches! One time there was brown out (no lights) and people were pouring in. Order here order there, telephone ringing - take home orders, and such, when suddenly a customer came up to me and showed me her plate! She said - look! in our sweet and sour pork is a breaded cockroach's legs sticking out!
WHAT? i looked at it closely and sure enough is the poor cockroach wrapped in flour and crunchy fried under the sweet & sour sauce beside slices of pineapples and paprikas!
How about you myLotters, anyone of you have worked in a restaurant or Diner before? or have yucky experience from eating outside? Do you for one, believe that the Foods served in Restaurants are clean?

I worked in one of the prestigious restaurant here in our city. I am incharge in the commisary if its dayshift, if its night shift I am in charge in the kitchen, we are the one preparing foods. From the market all the meat will be put on the floor and in our commisary area and we are walking on that floor with our shoes. That's just the dirtiest thing i've seen in that restaurant. We still never experienced serving foreign insects in our meal. Even if I know thats dirty, I still go there and eat sometime.

I know the scenario, ada8my21. I worked in a big hotel before, in the Receiving and cost control group. Check deliveries coming in mornings. and how these perishables are transported from the market to the hotel - its kind of unbelieveably unsanitized.
But its the way it is. No complains just obeservation. right?

But your kitchen dealt with that in the best alluring way - cooking the best tasting foods that makes one coming back.

true enough, there are no complains. However the people eating in that restaurants are very prominent person and known in our society. I just imagine how they would react if they knew how this foods prepared.

I don't believe that these restaurants that i usually go serve a totally clean food. Maybe 80-90% clean. I have a friend before working in a well known snack cafe and their process of preparing foods are really messy. They are not even wearing gloves when they mix these ingredients and they're just placing it in a table without cover. I myself noticed a hair on these snack set when i bite it. '+'

Thes food establishments know the Rules for the Kitchen, but its to much of a hassle to follow, so they do as they will. I know it is rampant in our country.

That is right out nasty...I would hope that any restaurant that I go to is much cleaner than that. Here in the US restaurants are checked up on and graded by the health departments. They surprise them with inspections and they never know when they are coming to see them. They get graded just like being in school A score closest to 100 is best. If they score low they must fix the problem and can and will be shut down if they are too dirty or things are not the way they should be.

That is a shame. If anyone here is caught doing anything like that they lose their job and they know it. Most people here are honest in jobs like that. They can and will go to jail if they do things like that. It always catches up with them if they are dishonest.

yes, we have that surpise inspection too but the problem is, the inspectors can be bought. Give them a good meal plus some take homes for the family and you get all the high scores DONE!

that is the result when staffs don not use hair nets which is required by the health dept. Some establishments cut down costs, or some staffs simply ignore rules.

Hi, i have the same experiences that your customer has. There was mosquito on my potato soup. Once i discovered fly in my tea cup. Many times i have found piece of hair in my rice plate. Sometimes sands on the outside of tea cup. Too many. Here maximum restaurants r too dirty. If u go to the backside of it then u must suffer a morbid suffocation. Lol.

Talking of soups, in my workplace before, one time when a big bowl of soup good for 12 persons was served, i caught an american cockroach (you know the small cockroaches?, we call them american cockroach bec they are light in color) floating near the chicken meat! I told the server/dispatcher and what he did? He simply scooped out the poor little thing, and rang the bell to have the soup served! eeehhhh... the customers never knew they were having a cockroach-chicken soup.

Hi Tigerlily, actually I don't eat in a restaurant because I am really particular how they prepare the food. About the rumors (the cook spitting saliva on the food) yes I believe them that's why I don't have a penchant to eat in restaurants. But I eat in fastfoods because I really see how they handle or prepare the orders. I usually keep the receipt so I can sue them if ever my tummy's not feeling well.

Kitchen Nightmares? wow what a tag! yeah i agree, home cooking is the best but sometimes occassions call for it - like when there is wedding or party or when you have visitors. Its the fastest & easiest resort.

hello tigerlily,
i don't have any experience in working in restaurants or food related works but i have some friends who works in there, that's why i am aware that there are these kind of yucky things happening around...huh!
although there are some standards that resto follows when it comes to cleanliness, still we can't really be so sure that the foods they are serving is that clean & that safe since food handling is really sensitive and sometimes people handling them are the problem...some are just careless and don't care about the other people...
anyway, i still believe that there are still some resto that serves clean foods...
anyway i don't have much problem about it since i am not really a restaurant eater & when we are eating out, we usually choose a place to eat. as much as possible we want the restaurant that just cook foods upon ordering and kitchen is visible...
one experience that i have and it happens just a month or two ago, its in a fast food chain and the chicken that they served us already have a bad smell...i guess the chicken is already spoiled...and so what we do is to complain about it and good that they change it...and they apology, i think they should have to coz that fast food chain is the most popular here in my place...

I am never sure of anything especially that. I don't always know what's going on, nor can I say what is, and what isn't clean. Most places need to yeld to a high standard, but its always possible that no one actually listens. I don't go out to eat much because of money, but yeah I don't garentee anything.
