How did your parents choose your name?

My parents had decided that, if they had a daughter, they would call her Kathleen. (My grandmother was called Kate). Whilst my mum was still in the hospital, dad went off to register my birth and, when he got there he gave me a completely different name. The next day, he told mum he'd been to see me, just using my name, and she asked "Who?????"...."Our daughter"....."but I thought...."..."I changed my mind" When my mum was born, her parents had wanted a son so hadn't even considered any girls names. When the midwife found out, she said they could give mum her name... so they just did.

My first name was the first name of one of my Dad's favorite writer's. My middle name is my Dad's first name. My wife named one of her son's after an actor, Chad Evertt. Chad had a girlfriend who named her first child after the name of a character in the movie, "Legends of the Fall'. She named her boy, Tristian, after the Brad Pitt character. I would love to remember one of my favorite actors, Vincent Price, if I had a boy. But Vincent is kind of common and giving a kid the first name Price would just be to cruel.

I heard that Matthew McConaughey's brother named his boy, Miller Lyte. I am hoping that it was just a joke. That's as bad as Cher naming her kid, Chasity. I take that back, Miller Lyte is way worse! People really need to put some thought into this things.

Yeah, people just dont think when they saddle their children with such names do they. They're so determined to have something "original"... Then you get the ones who choose an ordinary name but have some obscure way of spelling it - which means the teachers and officials will spell it wrong everywhere they go. I did know a kid called "Mikorlee" - which was at least phonetically correct. Yes, I remember that girl being named after the football team.... I wonder what name she's known by nowadays

My first name is after an English Actress. My middle name is a spelling my dad said he made up for a flower with a French name. My first name is also a flowering little shrub, so you may want to call me a blooming idiot. The last name of the actress could have been a middle name, but glad it was not mine. Mom said that people named that name usually act just the opposite. I just do not like seeing all these children that are named after media people, and it just soaked in that I was as well.

ha! yes, I guess you were Your explanation sounds like one of those puzzles... you know the sort of thing, - "my first is in right and also wrong...." I would never dream of calling you an idiot...blooming or otherwise. Obviously a fragrant flower in the garden of life.

Hm, and did your parents' marriage survive this incidence of male weirdness? :-) My parents decided we would all get modern first names and traditional middle names and then, far as I know, they chose them from a list or a book or something.

I dont know if my mum ever will... she'll be 80 at the end of this year and has said she wouldn't really want to share her home with anyone now. She likes to do things 'her' way (I did offer to swap so I'd live alone in her house and she'd live here.... best I dont write what her response was!!)

i was thinking that it may have been confusing for you if you had been a few years older but, within one year of your birth you would have been able to accept it well.

I was named after the first Carl Halling, who was from Denmark. He was either my dad's father or stepfather; without DNA testing it's impossible to say which; but my family took his name, and I was directly named after him.

I got my (step?)-grandfather's name. My maternal aunt was named after her mother. That's the only example I can think of. I have a lot of cousins, but I don't know their names and I've not met all of them; they're in Canada (smile).

When I look back, many of my male ancestors gave their eldest son the same name as themselves. However, the mother's name is rarely passed down.

Hello there! I am not really sure how my parents chose my name, but my mother was really religious so I believe came from Mama Mary. While my second name came from her own name. My second name is Rose, while my mom's name is Rosario. At least its connected. My brother have a more interesting name. I think my name is too common. Have fun.

My brother got my mum's favourite boy's name, I got my dad's favourite girls name. My younger sister got my grandmothers' name and my younger brother was, I guess, a personal choice, but his middle name was for our grandfather. By the time my baby sister came along, all the favorites and nods to ancestry had been used and so, my dad ran a contest with my sister's grade 3 class. We chose two names out of the hat each and then voted on the names we all liked best!! THe kids got prizes for participating and the one whose name got chosen, got a special prize.

What a lovely idea to involve more children in choosing the name for a baby - with the family still having the final choice. How old were the class?

It was grade three, so I guess the children would have been 8 and 9? It was fun! I would have been in my early teens. I thought it was a unique idea and the kids that got involved seemed to enjoy it.

I guess my mama was either drunk or completely stupid when she gave me my name! I just had to change it due to Social Security and man were those people laughing at me --but as it turned out lots of people have to change their spellings or the complete, whole name. It;s ok. I get a lot of compliments on my name anyways !

Hi, sorry to be so long but got a new computer and it has been a day or so getting it all hooked up . But as for the name it is the same name just spelled differently. How my mama came up with the way I've spelled my name all these years is beyond me.

Hiya Wizzy, My name is Sue how do you do? Well I really donĀ“t like the name Susan not for me anyway and I have no idea how they chose it I suppose it must have been the most popular one at the time. On top of that they gave me a middle name which I dislike too but officially I am stuck with it. I was never told how I got named Susan and I suppose I will never find out either. However I did find myself a beautiful Godmother and that was my bonus having a second Mom who as a person was second to none and also a Sister not officially my Sister but as if we were.

Hi Sue, I believe my grandmother was also my Godmother but i'm not sure who my other Godparents are (or, most likely, were). When my first son was born, we gave him a name that we both liked and gave him the same middle name as my dad. We passed a few names back and forth for our second son (& he would have preferred one of the others. I suggested he had the same middle name as my father-in-law but my husband didnt want it.

Hiya Wizzy, I never knew my Grandparents from either side or heard of them very much unless I asked about them. The Grandparents I stayed with when my Mother was at work did not live very long and they were never great communicators. Whereas my "Godmother"and "Godfather" you could always talk and relate very well to them. The only trouble was that they had to move for various reasons and I never saw them for years after that. They were gold for me and my other Sister as well as she taught me how to ride a bike, roller skate the lot.

My daughter was born in France so I wanted here to have a French name and I though we had decided on Janine Nichole but my Husband went to the Embassy and named her Debbie (because he like Debbie Reynolds) and Clara (ugh) (after his mother. I was broken hearted but at least manage to get it changed to Deborah Karla.

thank you for your response. I think fathers names tend to be passed down more often than mothers names. I guess thats because most men like the thought of having a son to carry on the family name.

I was my parent's second daughter. They, too, wanted a son and were not prepared with a female name. Grandma wanted them to call me Henrietta, which would be a combination of my parents names. I have been extremely grateful to my father, who named me after one of his school teachers instead. The most interesting name story that I know concerning that of my mother's youngest sister. She was my grandparent's 10th child and 8th daughter. When my grandmother was advised that the child was a girl, she remarked, "Oh my. I'm all out of girl names." The doctor, then, offered to name the child, and Grandma agreed. He named her Zona Alma. I've always thought the name appropriate, as she was their last child.

I take it you wouldn't want to be Henrietta then?? I'm not sure I would trust anyone else to name a child of mine but, you're right, that name does seem appropriate for a last child.

My mother was a huge Dean Martin fan. As I turned out to be female, the name Dean would not work. She didn't like the name Deana (deen-a), so she decided I would be Deanna (De-Anna)instead. My middle name came from her sister's middle name.

Our surname was Martin and my mum was quite keen to call my younger brother Dean but they had to name him quickly due to a neo-natal health problem (which, luckily, he recovered from) so they gave him the name I would have had if I'd been a boy.

Hello Wizzywig, well I really don't know where they got my name; I never asked because as far as I can remember I'm not interested . Kinda antique name compared to my brothers and sisters. My grandfather (my mother's side)shared my misery of not liking my name. If only I could something about it; what's done is done. Going back to the topic, when I asked my grandma about it her mothers name is kinda same as her mom but longer; Mercedes, mine is Merced.

It sounds like it may have been prompted by your grandmothers name. My name was originally going to be a longer version of my grandmothers.

The birth of a baby is a source of joy to the whole family so it seems appropriate that they should be part of the decision.
