Economic benefits. Cars are expensive and not everyone can afford a car. But we all need mobility. Bikes are more accessible. Purchase cost is not the only car that is inaccessible to many: registration fees, fuel, spare parts, service , all cost. Bike does not use any fuel, professional service is cheaper but can be provided at home, and spare parts are cheap.
Advantage for health. Obesity is growing. As cardiovascular disease. But we have a sedentary lifestyle, so not really find time for sports. Bike you can use in daily life and brings you all the benefits of sport.
Moving outdoors is good for health but your mental state, so if you have another bike, can you seriously think the best way to buy one.
You accept to ride a bike to work and shopping, if you know can save you money?
Do you have a bicycle? you use it?

I currently have a bike, walking, rollerblading and the city and school bus routes. But Im going for my license. I wont be using it over walking to the library or biking to school once in a while or even taking the bus during the winter occasionally (party because of gas money and the high cost of insurance - during the winter especially). The health aspectis a big thing for me too. I men being fit and healthy is soemthing important to me and I dont want to drive a car all the tme and becoem lazy and gultious.

I would love to do it. Unfortunately, in my kind of work, I have a lot of things to carry which I cannot bring if I use a bike. If only I could then I would surely use a bike. But sad to say that it cannot be done. I have to use a car to bring along my equipments. There are great advantages of using a bike. aside from health reasons, you can also save money on fuel.

yeah, i know the health benefits of riding a bike. but it cannot be my means of transportation when going to work. if going to shop for grocery or going to the market, i can use a bike. but this time, i have no bike. i have a motorcycle though.

i think those are expensive this is good a bit. as when they are expensive they are one of the biggest reason of the pollution, global warming and war for crude oil. think if they were not expensive. i think some things are better managed for our future. but we should now also fulfill our responsibilities towards the nature. yes by this we can support ourself also. and i think bikes are the best option and alternate for small distances.

Yes you can relace your car with a bicycle and it`s raly good for you, but if you have to go in 80-100 kilometers every day i think that no matter how much you want to be with a bicycle you will be with your car because in the other case you hve to cycle for about 2 hours maybe every day in one of your directions.

I do agree that there are a lot of advantages of using a bike heading to work. But it would be inappropriate in my case considering that I carry a lot of things when I head for work. I conduct training programs and I often go to places and bring my equipments. The bicycle would not be a practical aspect as I do my job. But perhaps as a hobby it would be great. Sad to note that I do not have much time to do biking considering that I am always busy doing my job.

I have always dreamed of having to go to work by bike. I own one. However, I can't really use it on the streets because drivers in our country could be really crazy. I believe it's dangerous to ride a bike on the streets here. If given the chance, I would use a bike to go to work to save money and be able to exercise as well. I really love biking but the roads and crazy driver situation here in our neighborhood and city just won't let me.

There are many instances when we cannot use a bike. LIke for example, you have large cargos. Another is when the weather isn't so good. Here in the philippines, at least in my province, it doesn't seem so safe to ride on bikes because there aren't any bike lanes. For exercising bike is great but for main means of transpo, sometimes it poses a problem. :)

yes, i have a bicycle. i usually ride on it to go shopping, to work, to have a short distance journey with friends. Riding bike can make me strong and good for my health though the cars become more and more and convinient for people working far away from home, but just like what you've said that the cars can cost too much than bikes, and also can pollute the envirment esp. make more CO2...by using bicycle we can get all the benifits,it's a way of life style and so for our living place---earth, use bicycle not car...

dear ice,
if i have a car, i will not replace it with a bike.
i would probably leave it in my garage and then i will walk all the way to the office.
naaa. am kidding.
i will schedule time for exercise even without the use of a bike. well i use to have a bike.

It is a great idea when doable. well, I that could never work for me :) as I live far from going by bicycle, and if I think of doing it, I might use it only in town or simply walk around but to got to my job location, study or anything else I need a car. I might want to save money by if I can, I would walk.
Thanks for sharing

My hubby has a bike. He uses it to go to the store and around town a little bit, but he can't get very far. Our city doesn't have a lot of bike-frendly places. But, he does use it when he can, and his truck when he has to go somewhere else a but further away. But, at least he has both.

I'd definitely vote for clean and healthy living. Sometimes I wish there was one day in a week when cars would not be allowed to be used, and only bicycles. Imagine a whole day of noiseless and smokeless road, busy with bikers here and there. Maybe a global law could be made to promote this.

Hi, Ice!
I'd love to do that, but I have to get to work well before sunrise, going through quite heavy traffic in the dark. I hate to shop, so when I do, I need to buy more than any bike I know of could handle.
If we had decent public transportation around here, I'd definitely use it, but I can't get from home to work on a bus, and vice versa!
I envy people who can bicycle to and from work, since they get a good workout along with their ride!

I don't have a bike but since I retired, I try to walk to every place that I can. When I was growing up, all of the women had shopping carts. They would take them to the grocery story and wheel their groceries back. Last year, I saw one in our local market and I bought one. I go to three markets and the one that is furthest away is 1.5 miles and I make it a point to walk to the market every week unless it's raining. We're moving to Washington state in July and our condo is located in close proximity to everything so we'll be walking everywhere once we get there. The health club that we joined is about a quarter of a mile from home so we even plan to walk to the gym. DH had a stroke in 1/09 so I don't think that a bike is in the cards for us. I believe that it is in Amsterdam that there are 2.5 bicycles per person. They bike everywhere.
