Breaking Our Own Walls

i believe that if you throw a ball upwards it will fall back down. i also believe that if you get yourself into a serious relationship there is a big chance that you will get hurt. belief systems are the basis of how we decide about stuff in our lives. we don t challenge them or question them because we ourselves created them for ourselves. it s like walking through a room filled with heavy smokers. the stink of cigarette sticks with you when you get out. it s the same with belief systems. as we grow up we accumulate all these experiences that mold how we percieve reality, or atleast OUR reality for that matter. but what if we questioned them just for the heck of it, especially those that limit our capabilities. for instance, i question why i always believed that i can t be as smart as Einstein. he s a human. i m a human. if he could do it, why can t i? or i question the belief that i can t do Tony Hawk s signature move The 900. he only has 4 limbs. i do have 4 limbs. i can also skate. why can t i do it? or to put it more effectively, how can i do it? how bout you? what are those limiting belief systems you have? would you dare question them?

Your examples relate to how some people can achieve great academic or physical success and others either struggle or can't achieve the same success. If you eliminate diferences like core physical or mental ability I think what you're really looking at is self-confidence or self-belief, commitment and hard work. So for example if you want to do Tony Hawk's move you have to believe you can. Then you have to be committed to work at the move. You have to practice and practice on your board and as you get closer to performing the 900 your confidence will grow. When you actually do the move and then repeat the move then your self confidence will grow even stronger. I think it's important to realize that there may be physical reasons why you can't do the 900. Maybe it's a flexibility or balance issue. In my own life I worked for many years on becoming a better public speaker. I had to gain the confidence that comes from repeated public speaking to inally relax and get good at it.

I've never really questioned my beliefs, since I know and understand WHY I have them and how I created them. Mind you, this I learned later in life, during my psychology studies.
You are correct though, in that our belief system is extremely strong, and DOES have a direct affect on our lives. The fact that we "seem" NOT to be able to do some of the things that other people are able to do is not a mystery, but CAN be achieved.
Again, your belief system HAS a lot to do with it.
The reason WHY some things seem to be impossible is first based on your life's experiences, and what KNOWLEDGE you have gained from them. Naturally, they will not be the same as another person's, therefore not giving you the knowledge that THEY gained.
Secondly...your belief system MUST be strong enough that you are able to eliminate all of your CONSCIOUS barriers that would inevitable hold you back. This would not be an easy task, given your "thinking" process based on your life's experiences, but is achievable with acute meditative SUB-CONSCIOUS stimulation.
In a sense, you would have to "clear" your mind's EVERY hindrance in achieving your goal. "Thinking", (which is a conscious effort) WILL slow you down.
However, IMAGINATION is the key to success, and the PERCEPTION of it, is paramount.
To "enlighten" yourself, is an arduous journey...and there are mind-set "rules" that MUST be followed.
You must first have a committed DESIRE and a PURPOSE for wanting to achieve the goal, else it will not take place. It must be important to you. You must be CLEAR on what it is that you want. You must believe that you WILL get it, and COMMIT 100% of yourself towards it. (i.e.: give it all you've got.)
Like I said, training the mind is not an easy task, but certainly can be done.
I wish you every success.

Thank you for the long and detailed response. i take that you re a psychologist? you re definitely right. it was a hard journey. i actually got through PTSD with a help of a psychiatrist. and when i found out that most of our problems are in our minds, i wanted to test this by eliminating my inhibitions to be a better person and to achieve what want. i actually know how to do self-hypnosis. served me well so far.

You're quite welcome.
I've been (am) a graduate teacher of Behavioral/Mind Awareness Studies for more than 30 years, but haven't really thought of myself as being called a "psychologist", though I suppose that title would be correct.
I'm glad to see that you sought professional help for you PTSD. There are still many people out there, who suffer with this disorder, and yet do nothing to aid in alleviating their stressful pain and/or anguish. Congratulations.
If you are interested in self-hypnosis, you may find that NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming) will help you further. There are various courses of study available, and several books written by professional psychologists/doctors on the subject.
Good luck my friend, and always (all ways) remember to, "keep an open mind".
Cheers;

well, i understand what you mean... to think outside the box and get out from our comfort zones... to be really honest with you, i am not a risk taker and i always like to play safe... so i never really questioned my belief or challenge myself to do something great... i am just happy to stay in my comfort zones... but i know that i have to get out from it some days if i want to become a successful person... i'm just not ready yet for now... take care and have a nice day...

i have attended one break through seminar last year which dealt about breaking the self-limiting beliefs we have. Just like what you have mentioned, these beliefs are the ones we created for ourselves... Not just by ourselves, environment, peers, family and all that's around us are factors influencing these beliefs.
even the simplest phenomenon in our lives, could create a lot of self-limiting beliefs...its pretty hard to question them because most of the time, we dont know them. they are a part of who and what we already are...
but once you've identified your impediment, that's when rebellion comes. rebellion gives birth to results... it's when people learn to say no to limits... ^_^

Great response. thanks for the insight. actually, for me, it s realization that gives birth to change. it s a good thing to realize what limits you and how it limits you so you can change it.
