Do you think posting in mylot help you improve writing?

Hi, friends. We are all clear about the fact that a large number of mylotters are from non-english speaking countries. Posting quality discussions or responses can be a real challenge to them and even to some native english speakers. We need to keep learning to enrich our knowledge and mind, on the basis of which creative ideas are formed and put down. But in addition to this basically simple concept, we also need to improve writing skills to make ourselves understood more clearly. One way of improving writing skill is to write as much as possible, just as the proverb goes "practice makes perfect". A lot of practice helps us to have a better command of this language, which, i believe is correct as my writing is gradually improving, though not as good as natives. So my question is: do you think posting in mylot help you improve writing? Or do you have other good ways to improve writing? Thanks for sharing.

I think it really depends on the person. If he or she wants to improve on their english or grammar skills, then they will try and will succeed by paying attention to others. However, I have seen some posts where grammar just does not exist and they had hundreds of posts. I have also seen some that are more like text messages.. R U going 2... Drives me crazy! But, I am not their teacher so I just ignore my inner teacher screaming. But, for those who are willing to learn, I think Mylot is a great way to practice. And, by the way, your writing is great. I would have never known you weren't native if you hadn't said so. Great job!

Thanks for your compliment, friend. I'm really flattered. I totally agree with you that it all depends on the person. The same as you, i've seen numerous posts in broken English, too. I can hardly figure out what the person wants to say and it causes me to doubt my own English sometimes. For these people, mylot is just a place for earning, rather than for learning. Actually, I've been wondering what are the criteria for judging quality posts. If it only means seven to eight lines of words, then those who write broken English can post many quality posts too. Well, anyway, one great thing is that many mylotters are good learners and they're willing to make the best of mylot. Thanks for responding! Best wishes!

The only way in which it helps is that it gives more ideas of what to write about. I type my responses on here so fast that I'm really just typing as I'm thinking, without much care as to the grammar or the amazing creativity that exists or doesn't exist. In here it is more like a conversation where I type as I think instead of talking as I think. Things happen way too fast for it to be really good writing.

That's right. Posting in mylot does trigger more ideas as we have to think about what to write, which is a process of developing our thinking. Once we have written for a considerable amount, we'll feel the inner changes in our mind. We don't need to stop once in a while to think about what to write; but rather, we write without stop and ideas just flow out simultaneously. Thanks for responding.

I am pretty sure that participating here in myLot discussions has improved my English and writing skills tremendously... And there is no question, it is working perfectly for everyone else too. I have come across many posts here in which the author said that his/her English and writing skills have improved... The reason behind it is 'practise'. Just as you have put it 'practise makes one perfect'. So here we're getting our writing perfected... I have one more thing to add to the 'benefits of being on myLot'. The participation here has cleared and improved my thought process too. Yes, I can feel the changes in my thought process. Now, whenever an issue comes to me, I analyze it immediately. Sort out the facts and judge the situation and pronounce a judgement, which proves to be very helpful... I have joined a new job and myLot, at the same time. My colleagues say that they really like to ask me for advice... They say that I am guru of all the issues... And I feel proud of it!!! This is the most wonderful site!!!

Thanks for your helpful complement. I didn't even think that participating in mylot discussions help me with the development of my thoughts before you pointed out. It's definitely true when i took a few minutes to think about it just now. Maybe i've been paying too much attention to the visible benefits i get from posting in mylot. As to the invisible side, i've quite neglected it. I know now that my thoughts are also improved by posting as i take some time each day to think of new ideas. Whenever i respond to a discussion, i try to organize my ideas in a most constructive way, which i believe is a substantial process in improving.

That is right... Even I had not recognized this benefit of participating myLot discussions. Recently, my friends at office had been asking my advice upon different matters (because they are all quite young). I did give them a good advice and the 'thank you' that I received, were great... My friends say that I have the most balanced brain and I can judge anything properly. Well, I feel flattered, and I know the truth that this wonderful change has occured due to my habit of participating in myLot discussions. Wonderful site!!! Thanks to myLot!!! Happy myLotting, buddy...

Yes, I'm think it improve our writing skills and English grammar, just like me (forgive my grammar)I want to improve my grammar and speak English natives or learn American English expression. I found mylot as expressing my self, by writing reacting and comment, although i know i'm not good in English i just tried and tried to write just what you said practice makes perfect.

I believe it helps you more than just your writing skills. Because being able to spend time reading and exploring lots of ideas from other users makes you more aware of alot of issues and in the end you benefit from everything that you read. Your way of thinking will be more broad and you will be able to participate in alot of discussions too to help you grow as a person ;)

Thanks for responding, friend. I can't agree with you more. It's not just writing, we are gradually improving in many aspects. By reading others' discussions we get to learn more knowledge and by responding and starting our own discussions, we are developing the way of thinking. After some time passes, we'll be amazed to find out that we're full of thoughts and we don't need to worry about being at our wits end from time to time.

Actually it did improve my writing skills a little bit (English is not my mother tongue). I still have the dictionary open in one of my browser's tab to re-check the underlined words, though... But it's not only that... MyLot gives me the possibility to discuss things that interest me ... and i don't have to bring the subject myself, which is really great. I just browse through the topics and there it is... something of great interest to me that I never thought I would discuss with someone directly... MyLot squeezes new ideas and thoughts from our mind, and we have a good time here writing about it... And then there's the money, of course...which is not much, so that people won't write if they don't have a passion for it, but would be a little more motivated if they really like to post their thoughts online. This mechanism works for me, and to get back to the subject, yes, it does develop my English skills... (as you can see...no writing mistake so far! - i checked 3 times the text before opening this bracket) ~ MyLot administrators will just love this topic when they'll see it ~

I really appreciate your response, friend and i see no single mistake. You are really taking great care on your writing. I approve what you said about the money. Though the reward we get from posting is only a little, it does motivate us to keep working. And $10 per month can really mean something to some people here. That's one of the reasons why mylot has been remaining a hot place for such a long time. Thanks for responding. Have a good day!

I've also mentioned that positive effect of posting here on myLot. I think my vocabulary has improved much since I joined this site. I think I've also improved my sentence structure and ability to express my thoughts in writing.

well as far as it goes for me I think posting on here has definitely improving my writing as I was never much of a writer and never wrote a whole lot when I did write or do that kind of stuff. Being able to come here and express our thoughts and opinions through the spoken word is a great way to express ourselves and after doing it so many times you can only get better at something the more you do it. I believe the more that i have done my writing on here whether it is in a discussion of just replies through posts I feel that I am getting better at it as when I first started I couldn't seem to make very long posts and since i have been here longer I have gotten much better at expressing my opinions and at making longer replies.

Yes, I think mylot could help in the improvement of a person's English writing skills. That's one of the benefits I get for joining here, not exactly my primary reason but it's an advantage. It becomes easier and easier to write in English everyday when you do this a lot. It's just like how I first learned the language in school - practicing it until it's made perfect. If not perfect, then next to perfect at least.

Exactly. Writing in english is becoming more and more easier each day all because of our constant drills. Many of us came here at the beginning not chiefly for practicing english, but as we get to know more about mylot, we find ourselves improving in various aspects and gradually changing our views, at least it is such a case to me. Now i value the opportunity of practicing english more than money. Even if i won't be paid a cent for posting, i'll still stay here. The significant thing to me is mylot is the best place for me.

I think so. When I started, it took me a while to respond to discussions. It takes me a few minutes to just structure what I want to say. More so in making discussions. It is a little bit easier now. I sort of already know what kind of response I want to make based on an idea, and I just sit down and type away!

That's great, friend. It shows that you are full of thoughts and ideas and you don't need to take time to think about what to say. Compared with you, i still have a way to go. I can't just sit down typing. I have to think about my ideas for one or two minutes to have it well-organized.

Well, MyLot certainly helps to keep some level of writing. We all know that if you don't exercise you forget much of the learned. About improving English, it's complicated because different people have different ways of posting. Some search the internet, some are improvising and so on, but definitely there's some new things that you can learn here like vocabulary and different ways of writing about different topics.

Right. Regardless of our improvement, we still have something to learn here. Usually, we just start or respond to discussions from our interest, but if we participate more in discussions from other interest, such as health, computer, etc., we'll learn many new things, which helps a lot to broaden our mind.

I am very impressed with the standard of so many non-English speaking members here, and I hope that everyone can benefit from participating in discussions in MyLotland. I have a couple of non-English speaking friends in my list and I have seen their written English improving more and more. This is a wonderful place for people to practice their linguistic skills.

I believe everyone feels great that so many non-English speakers are benefiting from posting in mylot. We are all learning and improving together in this big community, though from different aspects. I have some non-English speaking friends too and I've also noticed obvious improvements in their writing. After posting for some time, they become more skillful at choosing words and making their sentences well-organized.

I think that writing in mylot has helped me gain more experience in writing paragraphs, proper spelling, and expanding my variety of topics to write about. I have a spell checker that shows me my incorrect words and I learn how to correctly spell it. After a few times I am typing the words correctly. I was never a good speller in school which kinda held me back. But I have improved significantly since then. When I first got the internet I started using short form words and internet language. Then again in school I would use these words. Since mylot I have trainned myself not to use as much slang and use proper wording.

It helps a lot for me specially I'm not so fluent in English but an average. I like doing this to have my ideas get wide and open up for whatever new things we have read from the respondents. We learned from writing and also reading its comments and views regarding our topics. This is an additonal strategies to make our sentence construction be corrected and it will be understood well too. This is really a great help for everyone and so for me as well.

That's one point too. We get to learn about more and more knowledge by posting. After some time passes, we may be amazed to find out that our mind has been broadened to a great extent. Then we'll be able to write on more topics and share more knowledge with others. I've reaped the benefits, too.

i do agree with this. yes it improves writing.using mylot have seen an improvement in my speed of typing as well as less mistakes in spellings. as i know that they will decrease my ratings if i just put the discussions with wrong spellings so i also concentrated on the spellings of my words.

Improve one's typing speed is another advantage of mylot, though I'd never thought of this before as I'm always a fast typist. I saw some discussions talking about how posting in mylot helps to improve speed of typing. For those native English speakers who have no problems with writing, practicing speed of typing maybe a good benefit. Thanks for responding!
