Is it ok to give a dog with a human name?

Hi! Maybe it's a weird question, but I'd like to start a discussion about (international) dog names and whether it's fine to give them a human name. I'm Italian and I've called my dog Ciccio, which is the diminutive of Francesco (Frank) and many have criticized my decision. I love this name since Ciccio can also been considered the diminutive of "ciccione" (fat): when he was a newborn it was really an awesome fat little dog! Did you give your dog a "strange" name?

When my dog was given to our family, he was still a puppy, but his personality is strong & naughty. We decided to call him, "Nebo" from the king in the bible named "Nebuchadnezzar". Nebuchadnezzar's character was full of himself & he finally humbled himself when he recognize the sovereignty of God. In relation with my dog "Nebo", our family showered him with love and affection and out of his strong personality came out a very faithful and loyal dog.

This is a very nice name. I love names that have history, like all the biblic names!

Honestly..I have seen many name there dogs weird names. I think giving animals what ever name you want to give them is fine no matter there meaning. My bestfriends dog had a litter of puppies and there was one white one...only 1....she had just 2 big spots on her and I said that she was mine. Everyone else in the house was calling her moo cow because of her spots and I was told since she is my dog I need to name her and asap so I said the first name that came to mind Ria. I have no clue what it means and I dont care. To me it is a pretty name and everyone agreed with it.

Sure it's ok. Some of my dogs have had human names, others not. Just depends on what mood strikes me when naming the dog.

You're absolutely right. I've also two turtles and I named them Filo and Sofia, 'cause probably I was in a philosophical mood... :-)

Yes, it is okay to give dogs human names, I find it super cute calling some dogs as Nancy, Claire, Katherine, Andy, Paul, Greggy and many more. There's nothing wrong with associating names of humans to dogs and other animals, we can even call our German Shepherd Obama or Gordon or Vladimir or Nicolas, it sounds cute and adoring actually.

My dogs have fairly normal Dog names. Boomer and Rusty. I've in my life had a Trouble, Precious, Prissy, Smoky and Ace.
My husband has had dogs named, Snoopy, Lassie, Junior and others that I can't remember.
I do have a fish with a human name though. I have a betta fish right now named Bruce, and have had one in the past named Wilson.
I have a cat named Moe, also a human name.
I hope to have a German Shepherd again one day (my most loved dog breed) and I'll probably give him a German or maybe a Russian human name.

English names are all exotic for Italian people, so for them Bruce, Moe or Snoopy are the same in fact... All nice intriguing names! They start now to give an English name also to their babies and often they're names taken from soaps, like Thorn, Ridge, Brook (from Beautiful)... I like Russian name ending with ...asha (Natasha, Pasha, Sasha, etc...)!

I think it's all right to give a human name to a dog. We once had a puppy and she was named after a dancer on TV. It's cute and I don't see anything wrong in naming pets that way.

Sure it is ok to give your dog human names. My mother's dog and my dog have biblical names. They are Sampson and Delilah. They are papillions and have long hair. So we made the joke that Delilah will be Sampson's downfall. (We plan on breeding the pair when they are both a little older)

I have never had a dog, but I don't see anything wrong with giving a human name to it. Many people use really stupid names for their dogs, like "Fluffy", so I prefer a human name,as it's less humiliating . Ciccio sounds like a cute name for a dog

I think that there is no problem if you give a human name to your dog, i can`t see what can be the problem. I have a dog and she`s called Daisy, she were called like that before my mother take her from one of her colegues and we left this name to her i think that it`s a beautiful name and it`s great for my dog.

I don't see a problem there. We humans have names after objects, fruits and so on. I have seen people with names such as Apple, Moon, Jazz etc. and some even have intimate surnames like "Darling". So I think since we can name ourselves after these, why not for dogs?
Cheers.

I have always given my dogs human names. I want people to wonder whether I am talking about a person or a dog. I think we give them human names because they are after all our best friends.

I would give my dog a human name if i think it would suit him or her.
When we give a name, we associate it with something special about our pets, so if that will reflect on a human name, then i would surely use a human name.
The name we give to our loved pets is an attachment we create between us and our pet..so there are no rules really for me.

Hi! I don't understand why many people criticized the name of your dog ...also I'm Italian and I have always given them a human names.
My last dog was called Argo as the dog of Ulysse and I also had Rasty, Piperito (like chili its was really agitated..ehehe).For me it's not surprising given human names to dogs, is another way to make them like you I think it's nice!
