So I finally got the hubby to start thinking about having us get a puppy. As some of you know this has been a battle for the past couple of years trying to convince him. I've been looking around online at different shelters and have visited the local SPCA here. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any websites that advertise free puppies or even for sale cheap. I did find a couple of sites that supposedly advertise a bunch of free puppies all over the states but they turned out to be a major SCAM. Does anyone know of any other sites that are legitimate where I won't have to pay hundreds of dollars for a puppy?

Try, first off, getting an idea of what kind of dog you want. look at their adulthood picts. I say dog 'cause that's exactly what you,re getting...puppy doesn't last long! then you'll have them for an average of 15 yrs. Second off, decide what gender that dog will be, yeah they have different dispositions. I've raised a lot of dogs in my half century, and have found that their 'application'(what their roll in your life will be)(and their being female or male) in your life will make a big, big difference in their overall behavioral 'sturdyness' and in yours also; especially in the long run. You dont want a dog that doesnt mind well. It should have a positive reaction to everything you say/do. Doggy school is recommended for those who have never trained in depth! The environment they are subjected to will WILL impact their learning capabilities and their OVERALL OUTCOME into their adult hood. you must start teaching them the basics SOOON after you get them. Don't buy without seeing them in person. in most cases, you'll be able to find a very good breed of dog locally.

Yeah, just an addon. A "used" dog could be questionable due to the fact that you don't know what that dog has gone through. you'd be safer betting that it was, to a degree, traumatic. This can cause even an experienced handler to get bit...or one of their friends or kids that like to get too close and or pull their ears and tails and the younger ones that grab a hand full of hair/skin and pull.

I preferred to buy my puppies from a reputable source. I have bought two from our local "Save-A-Life". They cost about $100.00 dollars but are healthy and have all their shots. You would have to pay almost as much if not more for the first vet check up and their shots plus mine had already been neutered!!

That's true - at least from a shelter they have their shots.

I have 4 lovely terriers as my indoor dogs. Pure breed dogs are expensive. I really have no idea how to get puppies online. It good that you decide to get a puppy. It is indeed a joy to have pets and they can really add fun to our life. Maybe you can contact your local vet and ask whether they can help you.

That is what someone else mentioned too - about calling the vet. Good idea. Glad to hear you have some nice dogs.

Please try to get one through your shelter, if you tell them what you want most of the shelters keep a list and will call you when they get one in. You don't want to end up supporting a puppy mill, another idea is to contact local breeders, they often have cheep puppys that will never make the show ring but make great pets. We brought one that way and he turned into a wonderful family dog. Good luck

That's what I'm going to do. The breeders around here want anywhere from $500-$1000 for a puppy. I don't have that kind of money to purchase a puppy. I think most shelters charge between $100-$350 depending on the breed. I don't think anyone gives puppies away anymore unfortunately.

You can go on Craig's List and choose your area. There is often a rehoming fee that they charge. It is capped at a certain amout too. I would strongly urge you to go with a choice from the animal shelter though. There are some awesome dogs there that could really use a great home full of love. Take care and good luck with getting a puppy.

I'm trying to go through a shelter or SPCA. I'm just trying to figure out my budget first since I know they can charge a couple hundred dollars at a shelter or even more.

I don't know of a web site or anywhere you can buy a puppy cheap. Most people have puppy's on purpose with the idea in mind to profit from the puppy's. Unfortunatly, unlike cats/kittens you can't find them for a few dollars. All I can say is do your home work and know they are alot of work! I know ours is tooo too much work! He's like having a 4th kid & somedays he's worse than they are & he's 5yrs old. My hubby's research consisted of "Do you think he's cute?"

It amazes me what people are selling these pets for. I remember when I was little there was always someone who had a dog that was having puppies and they were giving them away. We always had a dog when I was growing up so I'm prepared for the hard work in raising one. Not to mention our kids wake up early so at least that won't be a shock to my system. What kind of dog do you have? That's funny that your husband said that. My husband is pretty particular with things.

I think its much cheaper when you buy a puppy here in the Philippines. You can even ask some puppies for free. I just want to recall few days back we had our first puppy also at home, but just about few days after we gave it to our friend for fear of getting bitten. Good luck on your search.

Well friend thats a great thought of having a puppy. Its equally like having a baby. you are gonna have lots of cherishing memories with the new pup. Well coming to the point of getting a puppy from sites, i suggest you to go to old or save pets institution. There are lots of pets in care, you dont have to worry about the health condition, they are maintained good and just need a someone to care most. So dont waste your money rather you can spend it on these care centers, those pets need our care!
