This morning I have to run to the store quick to get milk. And outside the store there was a pregnant woman ( probably about 6 month pregnancy ) and she was smoking. I'm a smoker too, I admit that, but I did stopped back 9 years ago after I found out that I was pregnant with my first child, and I actually started smoking again when I my second child about 3 years old. It's hard but I did it for the baby in my belly. One of the older lady in front of me stopped and told her that she shouldn't smoke for the sake of the baby. I'm totally agree with her. The pregnant woman got angry with the older lady and told her to mind her own business. The older lady walked away, but I just can't stop my self and told her "shame on you", and I walked away too. What do you think folks. If you see a pregnant woman smoking, are you going to stop and say something to her? I understand to stop smoking it's hard, but at least I did it for the kids.

I havent said anything but there is a woman who works in my place who is pregnant and smokes, I couldnt believe it the first time I saw it, Im new there and there is this smoking place to go to and the first time I saw her I thought she was there talking, then the next time I saw her smoking. I would never smoke if I was pregnant, and what shocked me was that her friend was just talking away as if it was normal, I didnt say anything as I dont know her and we both need to work in the same place, but if she was my friend, I would be telling her to quit.

By now, I think everyone should be aware of the danger smoking poses to unborn babies, especially pregnant women themselves. This woman is really doing her baby great harm by smoking. If I see a pregnant woman smoking, I probably won't advise her but I will give her a nasty look.

Most people that pass by her did that nasty look.

I actually battled this with a friend of mine who smoked through all of her pregnancies. I jumped her butt everytime I talked to her and made her feel bad about smoking...at one point telling her she should just shove an ashtray up there for the baby. She didn't quit but she did cut way back...I give her credit for that. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I gave credit too if they really can cut back, just stop during the pregnancy even better. Have a nice day too.

Well thats really shocking part. Woman are the moral of characters and atleast for the young bud. I never know is there any woman of this kind? If they love smoking, why they have kids and spoil their health too. This should be strongly condemned or even punished as this is equal to murder!

I don't think punish them will work. I mean, probably later on, when the child has health problem will be enough "punishment" for them.

no i will not do something like you did because it is not my problem if the woman you said did not care for herself or at least for the child so just let it be , maybe in my country is different from yours so i just care for myself and do not interfere in unimportant things .

I know it's not my problem. It's her own health and that's her child. But just being there saw that little incident, just kind of make me want to say that. I know i don't have to explain to her about her action.

That baby belongs to her so he has full responsibility to get her alive into this world. So she knows how to be careful about the baby that is her own privacy. You don't interfere into her's privacy. Leave these persons don't get advice from others if she really experience what will happen to her child if she smokes then she really stop smoking. This is called exploring by experience

I know that is her choice. I figure if she want to keep doing it, maybe she can do it at the place for her own privacy too, and not "inviting" people to give her the look?

Hi ibuemma, I think I'd probably be like the first woman who responded. Everyone who smokes is fully aware of the health hazards involved to themselves and also their unborn child. Thirty three years ago when I had my first child my doctor told me to at least cut back but not to stress if I was unable to quit. I did cut way back but I have to admit that I did not quit. Back then, it was not unusual to see a pregnant woman smoke. I'm not saying that it isn't harmful just saying that my daughter was born perfectly healthy and of a decent weight. I just don't see what good could come from making the woman feel ashamed or defensive & angry. It would seem that the stress of that would be bad for her baby also. Making her feel ashamed might make her be more discreet about smoking in public but it won't cause her to stop. As a smoker that is really struggling with the quitting right now and has tried to quit and failed in the past, I do know the power of this addiction. It does not mean that she does not love her child as others have suggested here. She is an addict. It is even advised not to use the patch or anything while pregnant or nursing unless under the advise of a doctor. Some people have a more difficult time than others with quitting. Hopefully her doctor will be able to convince her to.

I hope so too that her OBGYN can convince her at least like you said cut back.

I think that everyone who smokes is fully aware of the risks to themselves and to those around them, including their unborn children. I'm sure this woman had been told many times but, clearly it had no effect. Unfortunately, some people just dont care. No, if I'm honest, I probably wouldn't say anything to her because, if she hasn't stopped by now, she isnt going to be persuaded by me and I would expect exactly the same reaction as you saw. I work on a hospital ward where people have all manner of breathing problems, amputations and other smoking related conditions but, they still sneak off to smoke at every opportunity.... and then come back wheezing and needing to be hooked up to oxygen & wonder why they dont get better

I don't have any intention to say anything to her also. And like you said if she hasn't stopped already why bother to give her speech. I just feel sorry for the unborn baby.

I dont like seeing women smoke, let alone pregnant women. although I was told decades ago, it was acceptable for pregnant women to smoke even drink. but then again when you think about it, times are different now, and we have to go with the times. Like you, I probably could not have said "shame on you.." but I definitely would have thrown her a disgusted look.

I would probably just keep walking unless I knew the person that was smoking while pregnant. I smoked while I was pregnant with my daughter because I didn't find out that I was pregnant until halfway through the pregnancy. The result was that she was born slightly premature and small for a baby in my family (although not excessively small, she was almost 7 lbs). With my son it was a different story and I didn't smoke, he was bigger but still small for a child in our family and was born on his due date.

I think that woman is totally out of her mind. I think she knows that its not good for the baby and she should just take care of herself for the good of the baby. I dont understand her cause I wanted to have a baby but I am not blessed with a baby yet. I am even taking care of my health now that I am not pregnant and how can she do something so inhuman by not taking care of herself and the baby. I honestly feel angry about it.

If i dont know the woman id just probably do nothin, hey its her life she can do anything that she wants to do with it, but if i happen to know that lady then maybe just maybe i will ask her if shes aware of the danger that shes posing to her child. But if she still insist i wont even push the argument, in our life people make decisions on their own, now we can always give advice but the final say will still be theirs ;)i just wish i wont be able to run into someone i know thats pregnant and yet smoking, that will break my heart for the kid inside...

Nice question ibuemma! Hoping it's not you!lol Well, simple! I will just go near that preganant woman and kick her... tooot! haha! just kidding! Nope! i think i will try to be bold enough to tell her all the disadvantages and warn her to stop doin it. Normal people can get a lot of abnormalities or sickness because of smoking, how much more a person carrying another living thing inside her! It will surely be affected. Bad for her health and for the baby...fetus!hehe

What can I say if she is unknown to me and she is not going to take my words anyway. Of course I will remind her it is bad for her child and her, but that's all nothing else. I hope she would alleast love her child even if she doesn't love herself.

I would certainly think that there is something wrong with her mind . .. If a pregnant woman is in a good state of her mind, she will surely take care of the baby she is carrying by being healthy always. . . If one will smoke while she is pregnant, that only goes to show that she doesn't care at all what will happen to her baby . . That would be the most stupid thing a pregnant woman will do.

I better talk to her just to say that smoking is bad for baby inside her womb. I'll explain to her the good and bad between the smoking and being pregnant. If she react then it's okay i'll listen first to her then i'll explain my side after her statement was done. It is fine with me if she become angry rather than the baby suffered inside the mother's womb.

Being a women she must be know that smoking is injuries to health and to the baby inside. Yet she is smoking means it is rediculous. May be she must be dicted to smoke or she donot have interest in baby. What you said to her is good. She must feel responsible for her child. I feel as a woman, we must give a good health to the children if not wealth.
