With the way things are right now, and most of us living paycheck to paycheck. How much money are you able to save each month? Are you are rainy day saver or a object saver or both. (object savers are people who save for things like a new computer, or living set, etc.) Are you able to save for your children? I ask because talking with a few friend this morning a few of them said that they don't even have a savings account!!. I was shocked. I am not able to save as much money as i would like to each month, but i make sure i put something away for me and for the children every month. plus have a whole other account for things like my new computer and big ticket items i want in the future. what about you?

Unfortunately, we are more likely to be taking money from our savings than putting it in these days but, as long as we can keep our bills paid we'll be fine.

We get by but I'm glad we had previously saved so that we can now fall back on that money

I am basically living paycheck to paycheck without a job and am just living off the money I have from grants and loans. Getting a job would make me feel better about myself and help support myself out of this economical rut. I am currently looking for a real job. I have five jobs that are looking to hire. I hope at least one of them is interested in me.

Hi, you have to start a savings account whether you think you have extra money to save or not. That is the first step. Then start with something, even if it is only a dollar. Slowly condition your self to save something every month from then on. Once you get into the habit of saving, you will have to do it. Believe me, this is the first step. A rainy day fund is not an option, as a matter of fact, we encourage our kids to have at least 6 months set a side. Little by little, inch by inch.

i am with you sb! you have to train yourself to do it. i like you said started with a $1 each day and slowly started to add more and more. and after a while you don't even notice that you don't have that "extra" couple of bucks!!! i love to look at my savings account and see how nicely its growing

I am a fairly decent saver. I am able to put some money away each month. I have a big enough rainy day fund for 6 months if my wife and I both lost our jobs. I try to add at least one month of savings to that rainy day fund each year.

You can get there I was living paycheck to paycheck a year and a half ago. You can do it. I am pulling for you. I'm a native New Yorker myself from the Bronx originally. You know what they say about New York, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Good Luck.

I was always taught to pay myself first (savings accounts), and then to pay my bills and keep what was left over for myself. That being said, I am one of the many teachers out there with big loans and little salary. I take home about 1,100 a month after taxes are taken out, and my loans are 950 a month. That being said, I get a bit of help from my family -- I still live at home, but I work full time. I am not a mooch -- I rarely spent useless money. I budget. I save coins. I bring back bottles. I make my lunch, don't drink coffee, and limit my driving for gas. I take care of my clothes in order to keep them nice longer -- I've even been exercising to fit into old clothes that were a bit tight, in order to "reassess" my closet. I do NOT own a credit card, and do debit for everything. I do a LOT LOT LOT of cutting back, and manage to save about 600 out of the 1,100 a month. I feel that it is extremely hard to make an honest living without depleting everyone else's finances, but I think cutting back or making a change on all the smaller things really add up.

see that's what i am talking about. there is nothing wrong with saving your money and taking care of the things you have so you don't have to keep buy new things. it does add up. i too bring my bring my breakfast and lunch to work every day. which savings me a lot of money each and every month. because eating out every day all month will cost me over $500 a month! what a waste!!

If you take home around 1100 a month and your loans are 950 a month, how do you manage to save 600 a month???

I am a big saver....it is important to have 6 months living expenses put away, in case of job loss, injury, personal reasons etc. I also stash money...I have a coin jar...I stash money away at home too...I never want money to be an issue...that is what makes me a good saver

good for you workingmom50. i do the same thing. i have a coin bank at home. and i love to fill it up and watch it grow. i am working on having 6 months worth of living expenses put away. i don't have money stashed away at home, but that might not be a bad idea to have $20 stashed here and there

It has come in handy for school expenses for the children. Or when they want a little money to go out with their friends.

The first thing I do at the beginning of every month is put $50.00 away into my savings account. I also earn some money on line, and all of that goes into a bank account that I have in the United States (I live in Canada and save most of my money here, but work on line and get US dollars).

I no longer work so I don't receive any wages, instead I receive a small allowance from the government. I have a separate savings account but this is used to save the money for my annual bills like car registration and insurance, home insurance, council rates and so on. My allowance is barely enough to live on so need to be really careful and budget my money. I just wish my family understood that I really cannot afford to feed them when they come to visit and at Christmas time...buying gifts and feeding them all is really too much.

you gotta love family. because most times they act like that are clueless to what is going on. it is always nice to be able to do for your family, but sometimes you just can't!

Well, 34momma, you should consider yourself very lucky. I try to save but I really just don't have the income to be able to. By the time I pay my rent and bills then there is just about enough left for groceries. I do sell my incense burners on the side and I do set aside that money but it doesn't bring in enough to open a savings account. That money is used mainly for things my daughter needs. Trust me, it doesn't sit for long.

It seems like I end up taking money out of my savings versus put it in my savings. It is so hard to save anything, as it costs so much more now than it used to, so, money doesn't go as far as it used to. Most of the ime I end up using it for other things instead of saving it. I have bought a few things online that required paypal, so it was taken out of my savings for that, but that is okay, as they were things that I can use or really need. I hope to be able to make more in time, as I haven't been earning all that long. It will all add up one of these days, I hope. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

thanks rosekiss. you are right it's not that easy when things cost so much. and it always seems like there is something else you need or have to do that cost more money. what i think is important to know is even if you just put $1 a way each day that's $30 at the end of the month and $360 at the end of the year. good luck

I don't have a job yet so the money I save is still from my allowances. But, I still can't save. I don't know why, maybe because I eat a lot and drink a lot. Anyway, I can't save my allowances that's why I turn to mylot to earn extra money :)

I don't have a job so I don't make some saving. Actually its the other way around. I loss my savings day by day that I still don't have a job. I'm a college graduate and in 30's but two years ago the company I worked closed. Until now I still don't have a job.

I'm not earning yet. All of my money comes from my parents. I am a thrifty person so I try to save as much as I can. Normally I save around 1/3 of my allowance. But since it was my birthday last month, I was just able to save around 1/6 :(

I save a little for my emergency fund, and I have salary deduction every payday for the payment of my insurance premium which is really a long-term savings for me. Though I don't have that much savings as I want to have, but still, atleast I have a fund which I can use in cases of emergencies or when I have to pay something that is not within my monthly budget.

It is a embarrassed question,I have a relax job,so I get very low saraly.I can not save money every month. One day ,my husband said "let us save a little money every month so one day we will buy a car'.It is a good advice, but we have not enough money to save. I often pay with my credit card, when the pay day comes,I will go to bank get out my saraly and pay for credit card.I like to shopping,I often buy something useless,I buy them just because I like them.I often regret for what I bought. This is not a good habit, from now on I decide to save money,I should plan to live.

I like this question now because I have just started to build my savings. Last year, I had zero savings but I have realized that it is not good to be always short of money and you have to wonder where to borrow or where to get cash. If you have savings, you only have to go to your bank and use your own money. It is good to have savings. With regards to how much am I able to save per month, it is just very little but it is slowly growing.

Saving money is really very important but very difficult to do. In my case, as soon as my bank account is credited with my salary, I transfer electronically to my other bank account the 20% of that salary. It is really very advantageous if you can have a separate bank account, one which you can access through the internet like BPI express banking. It is very easy to transfer the percentage of my money which I intend to save every month. I also do not have an atm card for this bank account. This way, i will not be tempted to withdraw at any time. If I am planning to buy a big ticket item like appliances, computers, etc., I plan to increase the percentage for a number of months depending on the amount that I would need for that item. Like, instead of 20%, I will make it 25% for 6 months. Then, after 6 months, I would withdraw and buy the item. Hope this tip is okay and useful with you. Try it.
