HI guys, I live in south central Oklahoma and now that the weather has gotten so much warmer the ticks are coming out.
If some of you don't understand the word ticks, they are brown or off color parasites that attach themselves to an animal and humans too.
I walk my dogs every day in some heavily covered grassy areas which might have to change but I have been barraged with a bunch of ticks.
I pulled three out of my head two days ago.
I have put flea and tick collars on my dogs and cats but I have to find a way to keep them off me.
I have sprinkled cedar chips around and inside the house for the possible flea infestation we get here too.
Do you all have any remedies on how to keep ticks off us as humans or even our animals?
Please give me your thoughts.
God bless you all,
quita 88

Lol Quita you certainly have but thank you for that
I did read Gerty's Post yes and I have to say I was amazed to about the Salt but I will certainly remember this
Gissi gets regular treatment by the vet for Fleas as he allergic to them so it has to be done properly and it takes 3 of us to do it yes you read right, 2 hold him down and the Vet puts the stuff on, even the vet can not understand Gissi's fear of flea treatment, in the past he has bitten me for doing the treatment so he has to be musseled to have it done as he will bite
Hugs

I brush my pets every few days but not every day and I have not used Frontline but have heard of it.
I guess I'm going to have to use some different methods.
As to herbs , the use of garlic taken by mouth every day is said to fend off ticks and fleas as our bodie emit the smell and these parasites don't like garlic.
I will be goin to town in a bit and see about Frontline.
And thanks for the info.

When my husband was in the Army, in Texas, a long time ago, they would put flea collars on their ankles, over their socks not touching the skin. You can put them on your wrists as well. Wear a hat or a bandanna on your head. Spray it with insect repellent. Not your head, but your head covering. You will find this helpful against mosquitoes as well. In the house, mom always sprinkled the rugs with salt and would let it set then vacuum. That was more for fleas, but it polishes the outside off of the insects, because it is abrasive, and then they dehydrate. It kills the eggs as well.

Well, I'll be ! What a great source of information you are Gerty !!
I never thought of flea collars on my legs over socks---great idea! I do wear a hat but I will have to buy some insect repellent.
The salt I think we too used a long time ago but I had forgotten it.That is another great idea but I sure didn't know the salt polishes the insects and they dehydrate. HMMM? And it kills the eggs too.
I'll also have to buy lots of salt today too !
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your knowledge. You have been a great help!
God Bless you,
quita

Yes, I am always fighting with ticks in my house. I have 4 indoor dogs and I do have problems keeping them ticks free. I bath them with medicated solution for ticks from the vet at least once a week. It helps but I hope to read some of your responses here for other solution to this problem.

Hi, quita88. If we have ticks around here, I would not know too much about it. I don't have any pets at home. I don't be around them either. Our old family dog had ticks when he was living. I have never had to pull ticks out of my hair, and I hope that I don't have to either. Some flea powder would be effective in combating this problem. Or maybe just seeing a doctor would help too.

We have them too. I didn't know there was more then one kind but here we have the ones that will attach themselves to you until you have to pull them off with half your skin but in some other places they feed on you for a minute and then come off by themselves. I haven't found a way that really keeps them away. I mean I can be covered in insect keep away stuff and still I'm getting turned into the bug buffet. I remember some years ago when I was a kid at camp I sprayed a lot of this DeepWoods stufff on and didn't get not one bite while the other kids were getting torn up. Maybe the bugs are use to it now because it doesn't work the same as then. I suppse the next best thing is scuba gear and gloves.

LOL, I love the scuba gear and gloves :)
I'm sure there are more than one kind of tick and they all will attach themselves to any living being that has blood running thru their veins !
I have been dealing with ticks for years but have been in Montana for 7 years and had forgotten the nasty critters cuz we don't have them up there.
About the only way to keep them off is to check yourself several times a day. Everywhere---
Deep woods off should work fair but I'm more into natural stuff. I use a lot of Skin So Soft from Avon and helps with mosquitos and bugs in general.
I hope you don't have to spend all summer in scuba gear and gloves !
Get some kind of insect repellent and use citronella out side and hope and pray that helps keeping the nasties away !!
Thanks for making me laugh !

Hi !!! Yes and I ordered two bottles from an Avon Lady who's mama is a member here at mylot LOL Do you know her??:)
I use it every day and have a squirt bottle that I use the SSS in and dilute it down a little bit with water and squirt myself and my dogs when we walk.
It works for ticks and mosquitos.
I also give my dogs two tables or capsules of garlic twice a day as they say the garlic odor seeps out of their hide and the ticks won't get on them.
I took our new dog, Annie and our old dog to vet and she asked how I kept my dogs so tick free.
I told her SSS and garlic. She was amazed !
Now since you and I both know this Avon lady, you can use me to testify that SSS works!!

Hi quita88! Yes, I'm very familiar with ticks! I haven't seen any here in Alabama yet, though. I never have noticed any on the horse I have now or any horses I've had in the past. I have noticed them on dogs plenty of times. I got one on myself one time when I had been out riding the horse. I didn't discover it until after I came in the house, though. I don't remember what I did to get it off but I've always used Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil to keep any insects off of my dogs, cats, and horses. I also use it on myself as insect repellant. You would have to get it from an Avon Lady. This is awful that you had 3 on your head! I'm just glad it wasn't any more serious! Kathy.

Yes, we have ticks here(eastern North Carolina) and they are starting to show themselves since spring has arrived(90*F yesterday). Generally, we don't have too much of a problem with them unless we've been in the woods. Our pets are well treated, and they aren't able to leave the back yard, and there isn't a lot of trees in our back yard just for that reason. In my region, ticks seem to prefer the tall pine trees that grow here, so in general, ticks don't usually get on you unless you've been in the woods. I'm in the woods quite often, so I make sure I wear a hat, and keep my hair cut short in warm weather so my girl friend can check me out when I come back in. Good Luck!

I live in a lake area and I walk my dogs who are usually confined to the yard too but I do walk them in some heavy grasses and around the shore line of part of the lake once a day and sometimes twice if the weather is nice.
I have lots of trees in my yard but I've been using Skin So Soft from Avon on me and my dogs.
I also duct tape the bottom of my jeans so ticks can't crawl up my legs.
Garden Gerty gave me some great ideas of using salt in my carpets. It's an abrasive and it wears on the ticks and fleas wearing down their outer coating and the dehydrate and die. And, salt is also supposed to kill the eggs. And leave the salt in the vaccumm rather than dump it as the fleas and ticks you suck up can't get out and die in the vacuum.
I use cedar chips in the places my dogs sleep too. That is a must. Fleas especailly will disappear with cedar chips in use.
I too keep my hair very short but since I'm a woman I suppose mine is bit longer than yours but I do get ticks in my hair and stuck to my head.
It seems gross to a lot of people but it happens.
Hey thanks for the response!

Ya ticks can be a real big pain thats for sure. When I'm going into a location with a lot of ticks I put lotion on my skin. For some reasont he little buggers hate it and I rarely have a problem with them.
