Are you a picky eater?

I have come across lately with someone who is a very picky eater. It´s a first experience for me because I have even raised my grandchildren to try everythin I make and they like it almost all the time. I have tried to put myself in the shoes of the picky eater but it´s difficult. Are you one of those? How do you explain it? Does it have to do with your taste buds or is it something that goes beyong that, such as being allergic to some food? How would you teach a grown person to eat everything? I need answers ASAP as I have invited my cousin for diner every Friday. He`s a lovely man except for this. Take care, friends. Eat everything you have in your plate.

Hi marguicha, I am not too picky when its come to foods. I ate almost all my mom cooking and what ever someone offered me, as long as I am not full by that time. I am not coming from a rich family and we eat whatever served. Like it or not is not the important thing. As long as there is something to eat then it is good enough.

I was raised the same way and I thank my mother for that. I ate good, well balanced, food when I was little, but I had no choice but to eat what was placed in front of me. Food was good but not expensive. I learned to cook good food without spending too much. Later on, when I started to cook myself, I was also interested in how the food looked on a plate. Sometiemes a leaf of parsley will do the trick. Now my friends come to my house when they want to eat "elegant" food. It is the same they eat at their houses(or maybe something cheaper)but well presented.

Its hard to be choosy in terms of food because i was taught not to waste any food and finish what i have put in my plate.so thats why im not a picky eater.i dont think it is their taste buds, its just them who doesnt want to eat unfamiliar food unless they are allergic to it.Try using all the ingredients your cousin loves to eat and for sure he will try it. =)

I know taste buds change as you learn to eat new things or skip others. My mom is a diabetic and she used to put 2 teaspoos of sugar inher tea. Now she just cannot stand something so sweet. I am smuggling some of the banned ingredients in small doses, so he learns to eat them.

no, i'm not a picky eater at all... i eat almost everything that is edible and my parents always teach me to eat everything since i was a child... they don't allow me to become a picky eater... it is either i eat whatever is on my plate or i go hungry... my choice... so i grow up to be a person who can almost eat everything... take care and have a nice day...

I'm not a picky eater as well but when I got hypertension, there are so many food I don't eat, Sometimes in a gathering I'm ashamed to the host when they offer me pork, seafoods and other fatty foods. I have to look for veggies and fish or a little chicken, instead.

I have just discovered I have hypertension. I am afraid I will have to start watching what I eat too. For the time being, I bought no salt bread. But I am afraid that I also bought salami.

Hi marguicha! I'm not a picky eater but there are foods that I am not allowed to eat because of my allergies. Foods with peanuts and pineapple are very aromatic but sadly I can't eat those if I had not taken medicine for my allergies. I am a kind of person who will definitely try anything new to my taste buds but sometimes my allergies shows up after eating those. haha. happy mylotting!

Hi sachii, I have heard that peanut allergy can be very dangerous. I did not know about pineapple though. It is a pity, because it is so good. Take care and watch out!

I am not a picky eater actually. I eat anything as long as it is yummy, but I dont' eat weird foods. Why dont you ask your cousin beforehand what food he prefers, so that the food you prepared would not be wasted.Or ask his parents.

No, i am not a picky eater & i really don't like cooking for someone that is. I find it very boring to be around someone like that. My daughter-in-law is very picky & i'm very afraid she's making my grandson the same way.I hate to see people do that toa child. Just because they don't like something it doesn't mean the child wouldn't. Maybe u will get your cousin out of some of pickiness, hope so.

I am sure I will, Jo(get him out of his pickiness, that is). He is too polite to say no, but I know better. Still, i have managed to give him some foods he "says" do not agree with him. I told him he is the healthiest sick person I have ever seen.. Besides that, he is a sweetie and helps me a lot with things I dont do well. He has taken my old car in his hands and he is the official repairman for it. I only know that car needs gas to run. I like to cook for people and I like my cousin. We talk of lots of things we are both interested in while we have diner. And I know him enough to shoo him to his home if I get sleepy or tired. He is very much interested to come for my painting party in a couple of months. I will NOT make special food for him. So, if he wants to paint my living and dining room, he will have to behave. HUG

Sometimes allergies will keep you from even trying something. As a kid, I loved vegetables. I even loved spinach and brussel sprouts. Those are two foods most kids hate. I loved fish another food kids hate. I would want to taste almost any fruit or vegetable offered. Even if not offered, I would beg to taste it if it was a fruit or vegetable. But Bell peppers forget it. Yuck. I thought they were discussing and I didn't even like to look at them. I refused to taste them. Get them away from me. I was that revolted by them. After I grew up, I realized I need to eat some things I don't like just to be polite. I forced myself to eat things made with peppers in them. I would leave the peppers on my plate, but I ate the other stuff. Every time I got sick. Well after a while I realized I'm allergic. I found out how bad my allergy was about 15 years ago. I was on a hiking trip and there was a stir fry made for our group of 50. The person only put 1 pepper in the whole stir fry. My choice was that or nothing. Some choice. I took a chance and ate the stir fry minus the little piece of bell pepper that was in my portion. It was a big mistake. I was sick for hours and hours. It was something like 12 hours before the pain even started to go away. With your cousin, ask what he likes. Ask what his favorites are. Then ask if he likes whatever you planned to make. Be specific. Ask things like, Do you like garlic and ginger chicken? Do you like peas and onions?

That is a tough one. What about ginger for a spice? You can always just stir fry the veggies without garlic and onions for the kids and make some for you with it.

I guess one of my problems is that there are ingredients I use almost all the time that he does not eat. He is against garlic, onion and tomato. I wonder... How am I going to cook without them?

There can be any number of reasons why some one is a picky eater. Sometimes it's the texture of a particular food, lack of exposure to something new, having had it before when it was poorly prepared, or just plain not liking the flavor of the food itself. Also, sometimes being a picky eater is a matter of being what is known as a 'supertaster'. People who fall into this category have a higher number of tastebuds and are very sensitive to pungent foods...especially those that fall into the 'bitter' category. I fall into the category of 'supertaster'. Thankfully there isn't a lot that I won't eat. One of them is butter. To me it tastes sour and rancid. I won't eat anything prepared with it. At home I use olive oil instead. Eating out can be tricky because I always have to ask. What makes your guest picky could be any number of reasons. The easiest thing to do would be to ask your cousin what he doesn't like to eat, and avoid them in your meals. If it's lack of good exposure, you could always make a side dish, giving him the option on trying it or not. When I married my husband 6 years ago, he wouldn't eat anything with onions, peppers or garlic (there went half my recipes). The only vegetable he would eat was corn. Definitely nothing green (peas, broccoli, spinach, etc.) Their diet before we got married was basically pizza, hamburgers and fries. Because his dislikes were lack of exposure, I've slowly worked on most of his dislikes and he'll eat them now (except for spinach and mushrooms). When we got married, he wouldn't eat a turkey burger if his life depended on it. Now he prefers my turkey guacamole burgers.

If you happen to have a food processor, it makes it easier to 'smuggle' onions, peppers and garlic in. If they taste them, but are unable to SEE them, you might find it easier. My husband liked the flavor of meals done that way, and reluctantly agreed that the additions made it better. Garlic was the 1st to get incorporated, like what you are doing. Then I started adding sweet onions. When he got used to them, any onion would work. Green peppers were a bit harder, since they are so visible. I started with red, orange and yellow ones. It worked, thankfully! Food is so dull without them. One of his favorite dishes now is my stuffed pepper soup, which has tons of onion, peppers and garlic in it! Good luck!

What you tell me about your husband sounds exactly like my cousin. And those are the things he wonçt eat. Içm slowly teaching him to eat garlic, using it with moderation. But he was a single parent for many years and had to eat the rice he made YUCK!Içm treating him with good fried rice with a tiny bit of garlic. And I smuggle onions in many dishes where I usually put a lot more. I hope this works. Up to now, he is bravely bearing it. Take care!

Yes, I'm a picky eater, lol. I don't guess I'm as bad as I was when I was a child, though. I used to like broccoli (not sure if that's spelled right) but I got hold of some that wasn't prepared right one time and it just turned me against it. I have been known to not like something because of the looks of it. I probably shouldn't let that bother me but I do sometimes. I don't know how you would teach a grown person to clean his plate, lol! I hate to say this but you probably can't. We adults are so set in our ways, lol. Kathy.

It's good that you have taught grownups to like broccoli. It would probably a lot better if I had it the way you fix it. It sounds so good this way. Like one mylotter said, I bet you are a good cook. Kathy.

I have taught many grownups to like broccoli. Most of them had an awful experience of overcooked gray broccoli. They had also made it in the microwave oven. I steam them until al dente. They donçt change their beautiful green color and they are not limp. I serve them with just a dressing of oliveoil, salt, lemon or vinegar and pepper or I do fancy things with them that include quiches with dices cheese, eggs and sometimes cawliflower.

I used to be picky, especially when it comes to vegetables. But I grew out of it and eat everything on the table, except for the plate LOL. However, I do still have foods that I don't like that people seem not to understand it. They always wonder why I don't like fish LOL. I have no reason, but I don't like the taste and smell of the fish.

Fish? Its my first time to hear someone who dont like fish. Fish is rich in Iron (am I right) whatever it is, Fish is nutritious. My mother don't eat chicken and egg, now that's so weird right. Almost all people loves chicken meat. Even the live chicken, my mother hate it when there's chicken at her little garden, haha.

Hi! I could say that I am also a picky eater. Ever since I was a kid, I look at food at how it taste, how it looks, how it smells. I think its mostly on my taste buds because some foods might look good, smell good but taste bad for me. I guess the best way to do this is know what the person's taste bud likes or slowly tell him how important the food your giving him or simple mixed your own food with his favorites. :)

Hello there marguicha, hope you are doing fine. I think color and flavor of food play a very important role for fussy eaters. Perhaps it all lies down in the presentation of foods, because normally fussy eaters won't despise restaurant foods and to be honest, not all are delicious. Some restaurant foods have bland tastes but yet there are people coming..so it must have got to do with the presentation. And colors too.. like if there are fries, then there will be veggies to match..and some form of meat like chicken or a well done steak, for instance. You can never go wrong with grilled foods, I think..unless that person is a vegetarian.

I'm not a picky eater at all. I do have some very specific ways that I like certain things prepared but I'm not about to turn a meal away because it's not 100% the way I prefer it. Picky eaters actually annoy me sometimes because they often just refuse to try new things and when they finally do they go into it with the preconceived notion of not liking it so they just plain refuse to even TRY to enjoy it. That drives me nuts! I'll try anything once and I've discovered a lot of foods I really like but never thought I would. I think that by being too picky people really limit themselves (unless it is a legitimate allergy or intolerance). I really don't know how to get a picky eater to come around, the only thing I can think of it finding out something he likes ahead of time and making that for diner.

I think that some of it is learned when the person was little and they had parents that let them do whatever they liked. Içm slowly trying to make my cousin learn something he should have learnt 60 years ago. The thing is, I sort of adopted him so he is coming for diner once a week. So he`d better learn.

I am a picky eater, and it's probably a tastebuds thing, as no matter how many times my mom would try to make me eat something when I was a kid, I always hated the taste of many things and trying to eat them made me feel bad. If you don't like a taste, you just can't eat it. We, picky eaters, dislike many tastes. Every time someone askes me "why don't you like xxx taste?" I wonder if those people understand the meaning of the word like I'm glad you have no problems with food, I'm a little jealous

I'm not a picky eater..I eat anything as long as it's edible. Maybe it does have something to do with the taste buds or maybe he just doesn't like the food [he has never tried it before or he just doesn't like how it tastes]...You can serve him that food and nothing else- if he's hungry he'll eat it.

Yes I am, since I was a kid im so picky when it comes to food, specially meals. I came from below average family and the youngest kid. My father used to baby and spoiled me. If I don't like to food then he will get rid of it and ask me what I want to eat. So I grew up not eating most of veggies, but I love fruits. Maybe my tastebuds also have something to do with it. What's taste not yummy to me actually taste yummy to others.

I am a VERY picky eater!! I don't like most fruits, vegetables, meats, beans, anything really...but I am strange like for instance I dont like to eat raw onions, but I don't mind fried onions in food as long as they are diced very small and I love pickled onions? so as you can see I am very weird when it comes to food. BUT I am not one of these people which point blank refuses to try anything, I will always try once and if I don't like it then I won't eat it. I must admit I have smoked since I was very young and part believe that it has stunted my taste buds senses but since I became pregnant (not any more) I think they have had a little kick up the backside as I am liking more foods. Another thing about my likes...isn't about the food itself, the smell or the taste but the texture that I don't like, I don't like pea's or sweetcorn because they seem to pop in my mouth, whereas I don't like coconut because it leaves a grainy taste on my tounge, I can't eat celery, onions, baby corn etc. raw because of the crunch but sautee them for a few minutes and I love them, which I never knew until I started cooking myself. When I lived with my parents all I knew was my mothers style of cooking which I think didn't encourage me to eat certain things because of the textures I didn't like. Maybe the person you have come accross might be the same as me? Would be good to know how you get on :D
