When would you tell your family that you are pregnant?

My cousin announced not long ago that she is pregnant - 9 weeks to be exact. I was pleased she told me. We are quite close and when she told her parents she wanted me to know. I was surprised though - most people only say it after 12 weeks... Would you tell family earlier than 12 weeks?

I told my family that I was pregnant on the 5th or 6th week. I told them immediately because it was my first baby and I didn't know what to expect. I wanted someone to help me out through the pregnancy, so I immediately told my husband right after I used the pregnancy kit test, and my parents some hours after that.

True, it is good for getting advice and support if you tell people early on.

I bet they were excited. My cousin waited until the heartbeat could be heart on the scan - that seems sensible.

I'm sorry about your miscarriage. I think 3 months seems to be what most people do.

I think it is sensible to tell my close members of my family if I am pregnant. At 4 to 5 weeks pregnancy I keep the news to myself. I announce it at 8 to 12 weeks. I think that is better to wait until after the 12 week scan to announce it to my family if I am concerned with any bleeding. Some ladies suffer a miscarriage and it can be ever so upsetting for them. I announced my pregnancy after 12 weeks when I was expecting my daughter. People's first reactions asked if I was expecting another disabled baby. My toddler son has got spina bifida and hydrocephalus. My baby daughter is normal and healthy. Congratulations to your cousin on her pregnancy.

I have heard of the 12 wek rule too and would maybe wait this long to tell wider family and friends, but I think I would be so excited, I would have to tell my parents straight away! I have 4 children all born in the 1990s and I remember ringing my parents to tell them the news soon after I knew it myself.
