Would you adopt a cat from the rescue centre?

My mother-in-law recently lost her husband and felt quite lonely. So we went out with her to buy a cat. She didn't want kittens, but some more relaxed and older cats. So the obvious choice was the RSPCA and its cat rescue centre. We bought some loving and beautiful 5 year old cats.
Would you buy rescue cats or always go for a private vendor?

Well, I meant the "me" in the generic "rescue" sense. And I'm glad you went to a rescue to get yours.
I get them all kinds of ways. I pick them up wandering the area, people who can't keep them any more for some reason - or just getting a mom cat and her kittens. I once followed a pretty little mom cat home and asked if they still wanted her because she looked neglected. They told me they were tired of her and that she had kittens. They came to me with 4 kittens in their hands and asked which one I wanted - I told them I'd take the lot. I found a home for mom and 3 of the kittens, but Rygel - the white eared cat in my avatar - earned a place here as a kitten helper. He's a good helper with kittens, he pretty much raised the black and white one in my avatar - Oliver and he's been a great help with later bunches too.

All of my animals have been rescue animals, I've never had a problem. I have two cats now that are brothers, one is blind and they couldn't be separated so I got them both.
You'll occasionally get a bad egg, but then there's always chinese restaurants... lol.

I hope you were joking there ! :-) I saw one with only 3 legs who had been reserved for pick up by the new family. I felt so sorry for it.

Well, at least he'd found a new loving home. There's no reason to feel bad for him. Animals adapt pretty well.

Cats aleays seem to find us. Right now, we hav two. One is the last in a long line of cats descended from cats that were our pets. The other was abandonned at birth and found his way to us. I can't imagine ever purchasing a cat but if it came to that, I'd go to a shelter an dpay for the shots and whatever to save a shelter cat. I just like little ally cats the best and those are the ones most likely to be at a shelter.

My mom-in-law is the same. The cats she had in the past always just appeared and decided to stay.

Not sure if they are all sweet. Some might have been brought in because they had problems. Or had problems because of where they were before. But I agree, they all need a good home.

I got my cat from a rescue group, which got her out of a huge animal shelter and was trying to find her a home. I gave them a donation too. I think they are the best places to get animals.
If I ever get another cat I will go through them again.

At our rescue centre you had to pay for the cat, but that money is used to keep the establishment going, so it is like a donation.

There are thousands of animals out there that need loving caring homes. While rescue centers exist, idealy if at all possible it's recommended to buy your pet from one so you can save a life. Poor cats. I'm glad you were able to get a cat from a rescue center.
My mom, and I were able to do the exact same thing a few years ago. Thanks to my dad we got two.

They didn't want to separate the 2 brothers we bought. So we decided to buy both. We haven't regretted it since.

My first dog I got from our local Humaine Society. I think it is great to adopt pets that need good homes. But I think it is getting to much of a pain to do so. I don't know if it is like this every where, but here it takes a lot to adopt a pet now. Back when I got my dog, we paid $50 and she was ours. We went out a few weeks ago because my mother in law wanted an all black cat to go with her all white one. Well, they wouldn't let us take it because we weren't the ones adopting it. They did give us the paperwork she needed to fill out. They wanted non-family member references, home visits, and updates. I think that is an awful lot of stuff to go through just to adopt a pet. I know you want the pets to go to a good home but geez. I have 3 kids and a busy life. My house is sometimes a mess (ok a lot of the time) but I would take good care of a pet. I don't have the time to track down references and all that junk. I'll go get a free pet out of the paper lol.

Well, I guess they want the animals to go to a good home. My mother-in-law was with me so signing the paper work wasn't a problem. They'll do a visit 2 weeks after we bought them to make sure the cats settled in and are happy. As my mother-in-law is always at home that won't be a problem. On the day the paperwork didn't take us more than 10 minutes so it was okay.

That's great that your daughter is so engaged. I remember as a child we sometimes went to walk a dog - they always looked for volunteers to do that.

We do cat rescue so when we are in need of a cat that is where we go. For older people there are many older cats that need homes, With so many people loosing their homes they have also had to give up their pets, you did the right thing
by adopting this way.

Many of my colleagues do as well. I think it's a good idea - those poor animals need new homes and are often desperate for some loving.
