How do you like to cook hot dogs?

My mother always boiled them in water. When I worked in the resturant they would put a pan on the back of the grill and put a package of hotdogs in them and cook them all day. To this day I can not stand a boiled hot dog. I wrap my in aluminumn foil and place them in the oven at 425 for 20 minutes. OR I place them in a pie plate and dump a can of chili dog sauce on them and cover with foil and bake them at 350 for about 30 minutes. So how do you cook them?

I am really really picky. If I eat a hotdog it has to be a beef hotdog. The only way that I eat them is fried or grilled. However I do make them differently for the fam. I place the hotdog at the end of a croissant. Roll the hotdog in the croissant. Bake for 15-18 minutes. There you have it. My daughter likes them if you cut them into circles and fry them. Dip them into a side of spicy, brown mustard. I want a bar b que'd hot dog NOW!!!!! Ohh honey woulkd you mind getting the grill out of the shed? He loves it when I ask him to do things. NOT! LOL Happy MyLotting. dl

We have done the 'roll' at camp and roasted them over the camp fire. I am picky too not only beef hot dog but on the brand. Hate the generic brand of hot dogs. If I don't buy them so I know what I have, I don't eat them!!! Try baking them in the aluminumn foil in the oven. They have that 'grilled' flavor, or should I say 'roasted' flavor to them. Have a great day. thanks for the response!

I have to tell you I had the hardest time choosing between your answer and #34! I wish I could choose two!!!!! I choose hers cause I thought it was creative to use a rack over a pan of water, dumb blonde here,,,would never think of that. Thanks for your response.

Aside from the fact the only meat i eat is chicken and/or seafood. Long before that i worked in packing houses and seen first hand what the hot dogs are made of. I would not eat them or serve them to my kids.

I knew there was a reason why I am very picky about where I buy meats. I worked in a bakery and we were right next to the meat department and I know for a fact that kind of stuff did not happen there. Our inspectors would come in and throw our stuff away if they weren't happy with it. They were very strick with us on dated stuff. I also can understand some of the employees, we were pushed so hard for production, not quality! Oh they wanted the quality but more they wanted the production and even more then that they wanted the time watched we could NOT go over 391/2...ABSOLUTLY not!!!! But I know there are other places that the kind of things you are talking about happen.

I have heard that before. And I think they have gotten a worse taste over the years. Sure not as good as I remember. I use to only eat Eckrich brand. Now I won't touch them. I don't eat any of them very often. Thanks for your reply.

I think if you took a tour through one of these packing houses you would probably not eat them at all or become vegan. Ive worked at a couple of them and they really make you lose the desire for meat. Anyway Im sure if they knew a tour was coming through they would make it all look good. So here it is from the inside looking out. One place i worked at this guy scooped ground beef off the floor and put it back on the table. I just looked at him. He said Mary, the inspector said he could do that. I told him im gonna become vegan. I asked Mary about it when i saw her. She told me she said he could scoop the part up that didnt touch the floor. Well he scooped even the part that touched the floor. Ive seen steaks being picked up off the floor and put back up on the tables. They are not supposted to do this but they do. They are suppossed to shut down and clean the line when this happens. Ive seen condensation dripping from the ceilings onto the tables. They are supposed to shut the line down and clean everything when this happens but the inspector has to see it. If you see it and tell the inspector you will get fired. Because you are holding up production. Anyway inspectors and supervisors cannot be everywhere all the time so stuff happens. Employees do this cause is hard work and they just wanna get done quick. This is only a few examples. Sometimes employees that are bored actually play with the meats.

It depends on how we are eating them. I mostly boil them but will also do them on the grill. Great idea baking them and using chili dog sauce!

Did you read all the comments on here? Some have great ideas on different ways to serve them. Seems boiling them is the #1 way. Thanks so much for your reply.

We don't have hot dogs very often either. I have this diet for high cholestrol and they are on my page of what not to eat! I also have some hot dogs that I just love and I have a package of them. They are a 'summer only' item, so they have just come out in the store and I have only one store that I can get them in. So as long as I don't go their I will be ok. I just love these hot dogs!

I like mine boiled. I put 3 slice marks on the dogs, then add a teaspoon of garlic to the water. I found this recipe online from a major chef. It gives the dogs a better flavor than just plain boiled dogs. Since we make homemade Chili, we don't add the dogs right away to it. Plus boiling them is faster with kids in the house.

I have never heard of adding the garlic to the water, but yes it would change the taste. I do add some garlic powder with the salt and pepper to my water when I am cooking potatoes. Thank you for your response.

This has nothing to do with the hotdogs but when I cook vegetables for stew, or noodles for something, I don't cook them in water I cook them in beef or chicken broth depending on what I am making. well, except for lasagna or spagghetti or tuna cassarole, maybe I should have reworded that. thanks.

Your welcome. Before reading about the chef doing it, I just threw in the dogs in some water and waited til they got plump. My husband adds other things to it as well. Even hot sauce for a added kick.

I prefer them grilled.. but I won't use the grill, so if hubby is not home and we're having hot dogs I'll fry them in a pan. I do not like boiled hot dogs either.

My last job was in a popular bakery and I am telling you there is now very little that I would buy from a bakery. But I make all my stuff homemade so the only thing I buy is croissants. (well, buns and bread sometimes, but it wasn't that kind of bakery.)

Welcome to my world! I won't light the grill. If my husband isn't home I will call my daughter or her husband to come over (they live across the road from us) to light the grill. I don't mind cooking once it is lit but I refuse to lite it and it is self-igniting. I tried once and I swear I did exactly what it said to do and all most blew the thing up!!! I don't know if it was the way my mom always cooked them or working in the restruant and them sitting in that pan all day, but I can't stand them boiled. (When I was waitressing and a customer would order one I would tell them "you really don't want that. I work here, trust me!") Thanks for your response.

Funny how working in a place makes you see things in a different light. I once worked in a deli of a grocery store. Now I'm very picky about the deli meats I will buy.

Mostly I boil them, since that's what I learned growing up. My dad also grilled them, so sometimes I will, too. I learned of a way to steam them by putting a rack over the pot of boiling water and a lid on top. This causes the hot dogs to double in size, if you like that. I like hot dogs with cheese and chili and onions, or sometimes with mustard, relish, and sauerkraut. I also like "slaw dogs" with coleslaw.

Thank you for your response. That is a neat way to steam them. The nice things about a hot dog is there is so many different ways to cook them but so many different ways to dress them, up or down!!! Thanks for sharing!!

I don't particularly care for hotdogs. My kids always liked them in the microwave better than boiled. If I do eat a hotdog I either have it cooked on the grill (slightly burnt) or broil it in the oven with cheddar cheese cut into the middle of it.

My kids like microwaved. I never used a microwave until I went to work. I was a food demonstrater for about 3 months and they had to teach me how to use it!!!!! I only use it to melt chocolate and butter!!!!!! I do the hot dogs in teh oven a lot, if I cannot grill them!!!! Thank you so much for your response!!!!

We don't eat hotdogs very often. I will eat a hotdog but I really don't like them all that much. If I eat one it has to be on a bun with ketchup, mustard, and lots of slaw. I think I put lots of slaw so I don't really taste the hotdog. lol When I cook them I usually boil them. Sometimes we grill them too.

I love mine boiled. I really don't care for them in the microwave at all. I do find if you are pressed for time that if you put them in a bowl of water in the microwave they taste a bit better. I'm not to crazy about them being grilled. The taste of them and the lines that people are so crazy about dont' interest me. I also have to have a certain brand. If its red I like Lykes but since red is not good for you i switched to BarS the brown ones. I think they taste better then other brands.

Hi mflower, Thank you for your response. I am just like you, I have a certain brand I like. I am not buying them anymore since they are on my 'do not eat' page of the diet the Dr gave me, but when I do I only buy certain ones and only know of 1 store that caries them so that removes the temptation!!! I have not heard of Lykes but have seen the BarS in stores.

I actually like cooking them on the grill. Grilled hot dogs are really good. I also boil them when the weather is bad, or when I just don't feel like going outside to cook. I also like cutting them up and cooking them in pork & beans.

Hi! I love grilled hot dogs. That was why I started doing them in the oven when the weather is bad. Anything but boiled. I have cut them up before in pork and beans, also mac & cheese. There is so much you can do with them, to bad they aren't healthy!!! Thank you so much for your comment.

We usually cook ours on the grill. When I was younger I had my fare share of boiled hot dogs but they were usually better than the char-broiled ones that would come off the grill. My husband does a great job of cooking them on the grill and not burning them so thats the only way we do them now.

just steam them, then put dressings, depending on my preferences for the day... there are others, though, who fry their hotdogs... aaarghh... the transfat and preservative mix... i think, as the germans and swiss do, steaming remains the best way of preparing hotdogs... although some nationalities eat hotdogs straight from the freezer (after thawing, of course) no cooking because heat removes the natural taste of certain hotdogs...

I never freeze hot dogs or eat one that has been frozen if I know it. Of course I do think they come into the store frozen but I don't know it. I really am very picky about what I eat and buy. Thank you for your response.

Thank you for your comment. Fried I could handle. Just not that setting in water. Last summer we went to this museum and they had a hot dog stand and the hot dogs were all sitting in water and they would take them out and add different toppings........I didn't eat!!!

I like hotdogs either cooked in oil or boiled in water. What I do normally is to boil them first and then once the water is dry then I put some oil (just a little will do fine) to cook it. It does not diminish the taste; try it sometime.

I have never been a microwave person, that was why I came up with putting them in the oven and baking them, wrapped, loosly, in the foil. Then I can take it out get my 'dogs' and throw the foil away, no dishes to wash!! thanks for your response.

I do mine in the grill or in the microwave. I cant stand them boiled. We like the kind that go crispy and brown. In the microwave I use a browning plate which you heat first and then add the sausages and the hot plate keeps the skins crisper.

When I do them in the oven with out foil they get brown and crispy. I like grilled, just no way boiled. Thanks for your response.
