Hi Guys ! I am currently having trouble with insomnia. I have taken sleeping pills before but they only work for about four hours and then poof, they are gone and I am wide awake. Do you guys have any home remedies to help me sleep???

Personally, no matter how bad my insomnia gets I would not resort to sleeping pills but that's just me. Obviously, they work for millions of others. What do I do when I can't sleep? Well, I repeat the mantra "no" in my head if I start thinking before I try to sleep. Thinking is very bad so I banish this with the word "no." It works too. Recently, I bought brand new pillows by a company called Fogarty, a well-known British brand that has been going for years. They were bought from a Debenhams store in Blackpool, where Mum lives. I only use one of them at a time (the firm, man-made fibre versions) and I can honestly say I've not had a bad night's sleep since buying them. At a tenner for two (instead of twenty quid) they were a bargain for such a prestigious brand. New bedding might be the answer if all else fails!

Hello... I have had this problem after my college was over. I couldn't sleep at all. And during the day I would look and feel really tired. It went on for a couple of years. I tried sleeping pills, but trust me, they are no good. I started exercising and things got well. Now my sleep is proper.. . I think, you should go for a walk or something, every morning or evening... That will keep you fit, will increase your apetite, make you tired and finally, you will feel like going to sleep... Take care... Hope this will work for you!

Yes, that would be a great idea. Taking a walk early in the morning and in the late evening too. It will make you feel tired and hence, sleepy in the night.. And a walk by a lake is certainly wonderful idea... Lengthening would do too, but it might make you sleep during the day too. So adding another walk would be a great idea... Have a great time!!!

I do walk every single day. I guess I need to lengthen my walks or at least add another one. I live by a lake and it's not hard to enjoy that walk ! Thanks for the advice ! God bless.

No Gabs. I am not over this. The insomnia persists. I have had it for a long time and there have been really great ideas to try here on mylot but it does take time for these ideas to work. I found that the one idea of mantra of saying over and over again NO! that it takes my mind off what I was thinking and puts me in relaxed state. Weird isn't it? Hey, hugs, quita

If you are immune to pills, I don't know if herbal will be strong enough for you. I used to work at a health food store, and I can honestly say that of all the things I researched while there, passionflower is one of the best things you can take to help you sleep. It's in a lot of teas like"nighty Night." Either try that, or anything with Valerian in it. Valium is derived from highly concentrated Valerian. Valerian also helps with depression.

Thanks for this info but my dr. tells me that herbals are the same essence as pills and contain the same things. I do have to be careful as I have two stents in my heart. I have taken valerian in the past and it makes me sleepy but can't take it now. I do thank you for the response tho.

Hi quita sorry to hear that you are having trouble sleeping. I used to have problems a few years ago and I know it makes you feel so tired all day long. After a few nights of this I found that lavender oil in a warm bath relaxed me enough to go to bed and get to sleep easier. No matter what you try I hope it works well for you. Let all us myLotters know how things go. Hugs and Love overwith

HI and thanks ! I know part of my problem is due to hot flashes/night sweats ---and I also know these are not going away any time soon. I also know these night sweats are caused by taking me off hormones when I had the stents put in my heart after two heart attacks. So, I have not tried lavender oil in a warm bath but will be going to town tomorrow and will pick some up and give it a try. I get so tired of laying there staring at the ceiling and feeling like crap the next morning I'm ready to scream ! I do thank you for the lavender idea and I will put it to use. Thanks girl, and many hugs, quita

If you haven't tried it already look into Unisom (brand name) or Doxylamine (generic). It has a longer half-life than other over the counter sleep-aids, so it should stay in your system longer. When I take a whole 25mg it has me sleepy for about 10-12 hours!

Hi quita! I heard that eating cherries helps with insomnia. Now I'm not sure if that's fresh cherries or what but that's what I heard from OreoCookie3 from one of her discussions. So try that, maybe it'll help. Good luck!

Have you tried eating a turkey sandwich & drinking a glass of milk before going to bed? Scientists say there's a chemical reaction they cause that can relax you. Have you made sure your environment is dark, comfortable, & quiet? Have you meditated about your day, said evening prayers for peace? Do you have some duty you left undone that haunts you? Have you made a loose schedule for the next day, & set the alarm, in order to wake feeling prepared for the day? Are you feeling ill? Seen the doctor about your insomnia? Do you wake up consistently at the same time? Perhaps there's something that pulls or startles you from sleep that occurs regularly at that time, such as a nearby garbage truck banging cans. There are lots of things you can try. Oh, one more thing I usually find helpful (don't laugh; it works when nothing else does, though I've no idea why...): Flip so that your head is at the foot of the bed, & feet at the head. Don't knock it 'til you've at least tried it. It might work for you! Bon voyage on your journey to the land of Nod! Maggiepie HAVE A TOPIC THAT WON'T quiiiite FIT INTO JUST ONE CATEGORY? Believe it or not warm milk and/or popcorn makes me drowsy. Can't hurt to give it a try. Make sure you aren't eating any chocolate, soda or too many sweets at night.

I know some here already mentioned milk. I think that is one. But try to figure out why can't you sleep. There was a common joke that you can not sleep at because you were asleep the whole,I hope that is not the case for you. Try reading novels but that does not work for me since I love reading. You can try solving math problems if you like. Try not to think of anything and relax, take deep breaths and see if that help. I sometimes feel sleepy after answering a lot of discussions here in mylot since English is not my primary language.

Good to hear that you are getting better. I to do that sometimes, telling myself to not think and sleep. You can also try counting sheep or something but do not count something you like, like food or you might be more awake and be hungry.

HI! I've had plenty of great ideas..............trouble is I have to go buy some it and haven't had the time. I think the best one that has worked for me is the mantra thing.........never have done that kind of thing before but by saying NO to myself over and over again, my mind finally does shut down and I can sleep. I only sleep about four hours and then I'm up again and the next day I am worn out. My husband and I even changed beds mostly for his health problem but I do believe it has helped me by using a differnt mattress and as it turns out this endeavor has helped him too. I'm working on the great ideas and will surely come across one or two that does the trick. Thanks for your ideas tho. God Bless,

I used to drink Chamomile Tea all the time to help me sleep. I also take Tylenol P.M. every night to help me sleep and it's not addictive, either. You say that sleeping pills don't help you, though. I like the old remedies of counting to 100 or counting sheep or whatever your favorite animal is. I also listen to cds with soft music, rain, ocean sounds, etc. at night. I find these very relaxing. Kathy.

Just steer clear of Revelations! Stick to the "begats." Those would make a rock snore... Maggiepie HAVE A TOPIC THAT WON'T quiiiite FIT INTO JUST ONE CATEGORY? POST IT IN Open Mike!

Some nights, if I'm not going to bed too late, I will read the bible before I go to sleep. It helps me to read something relaxing like this. Kathy.

Cyrus, thanks for the suggestion of Chamomile tea. I think that is one of the best suggestions yet but I can't take Tylenol Pm. Sleeping pills help for about four hours and then poop out......... I had one response I tried last night about chanting to myself, no, when my mind wouldn't shut off and it works. I do have a clock too that has the sounds of the ocean and the wind blowing. Hadn't thought of that, but will put it to use too ! You are a sweet heart for all these great ideas! Thanks and God bless. I also have the Bible right at my bedside. I wonder why we don't see what is right in front of our eyes LOL Maggiepie :) you are sooo right about the begats making a rock snore LOL I shall try that too if all else fails ! Nity nite to both of you LOL hugs also to both of you quita

Hello, I'm sorry for you. Insomnia probably isn't easy. I usually don't have trouble sleeping (I'm the kind of person who falls asleep as soon as my head touch the pillow!) but sometimes if I'm upset or thinking too much about something I have trouble. I had a friend who had insomnia and it got worse because she was so worried about sleeping she couldn't fall asleep, ironic but extremely bothersome for her. My trick is counting but I don't count sheep or anything like that, I count my breathing, I lie down and concentrate on my breathing, when you're lying down it's your stomach and not your chest that's moving so you can put your hand on your stomach to feel the breathing. now breathe in and out as slowly as you can. I've never reached twenty! and it worked for many of my friends too, it doesn't cost a thing and trying it out won't take you much either so good luck with that.

That is a good idea but unfortunataly it does not work for me. I 've had two ideas sent to me that if you need to help somebody else has really worked the last two nights. I have eaten cherries............yes cherries ! and we hubby and I have also exchanged matteresses! It has worked like a charm. I 'm not sure who told me to use the cherries here on mylot but I have bought the frozen kind and have found I can take a few out of the pkg. and eat a few before bed time and they sure do work. And the changing of mattresses is great too. Thanks for taking the time to respond. quita
