Escalators are treated like Stairs...

It has been bothering me ever since... I do not understand why some Filipinos treats the escalators as stairs.
I am on my way to school, I have to ride the LRT. Instead going up the stairs I used the escalator because my legs were already hurting. As I wait while it takes me to the top, some of people who were using the escalator started walking up. And I was like, "what the heck?"
Escalators are also stairs but they are run by machine so that you don't need to walk anymore, it takes you there automatically all you to do is wait, but I don't really get is why they treat it as a normal stairs where they can just use the normal stairs if they are just going to walk up.
What is the use of the escalators if you are just going up treating it like a normal stair right? What bothered me most is that they would say excuse me just to pass through and go up... I mean what gives... I know there is already the politeness of passing by but the thing is, it sometimes irritates me that why use it when you are just walking up anyways...
Any sharing.. would appreciate if to know why...

Because they were in a hurry. In other parts of the world, escalators in LRT stations or subway stations needs you to stand on either left or right side of the escalator so that other people who are rushing could run on the other side of it.

Well, there is always the normal stairs. If they are in the hurry why not use that? Instead using the escalator for people who are not in the hurry and all, why just use the regular stairs, it is more practical, you don't need to disturb anyone at all, all is now is manpower for the person to go up..

It is because it is much faster using the escalator rather than using the normal stairs. I think there is nothing wrong with that except for not asking excuse to the people. I do it lot specially when i'm in a hurry.

This response says it all. When I went to Singapore you have to stay in either left or right (can not remember which part) if you will just stand in the escalator and on the other side people who wants to walk in the escalator will pass in that side. It is here in the Philippines that we do not implements which side is which mainly because we are laid back and not always in a hurry like in a country like Singapore.

you do know that on an escalator you can walk up right?People do it to get up faster. I do not see you why your bothered by this. It is not like they were running by punching you. I mean they even said excuse me.
I personally would have walked by you because I just cant stand standing on an escalator. I walk up them because it is faster to get to the top and then I can spend more time doing what I need up there. also I just think your lazy for riding an elevator because it is not productive with anything

Oh dear, there are people who maybe so in a hurry so you can't really blame them if they still take steps in the escalator. I myself do walk on the escalator when I am running against time. Escalators do run automatically but I can save even more time if I will take steps aside from the automatic movement of the escalator. However when I do that I make sure I say "excuse to any person I pass by." I think we should be polite even when we are in a hurry.

I think there is completely wrong with that. People walk fast in an escalator because they are in a hurry. It's faster when you use the escalator than the stairs. I also do that when I'm in a hurry. But I make sure that I'm polite when I'm like that. So just bear with them. Maybe someday you'll also do what they do.

Ooppss! I mean "There is completely NOTHING wrong with that." Sorry, I didn't notice that I forgot to write the word "nothing".
Thanks.

I agree with the other folks.. because people are in a hurry. In Melbourne, there is a sort of "system" that those who want to remain standing and waiting ought to stay on the left side of the escalator, and those who want to hurry and walk up the escalator ought to stay on the right side. Escalators are not just for lazy people. You see, when you are in a hurry (like in our case here, sometimes, we need to rush to a different platform to catch another train), walking up the escalator makes it a lot faster, because the machine is helping you move up faster while using the same amount of energy as you would as you climb each step of the stairs. But of course, you'll have to step on lesser number of steps, compared to normal stairs. Just because Filipinos do that does not mean they are ignorant about using the escalators. It's not only them that do that, but also citizens of various large and highly urbanized countries. It is not ignorance that makes them do that. It is knowing that time is too precious to waste at that very moment.

I guess they're already late for something. There are people who hates waiting or doing nothing while the clock ticks. And I'm one of them, though I change my mood from time to time. It's irritating if you just waste your time waiting when you can actually do something with that time.

But, why not use the stairs? isn't much accessible for those who are in a hurry? most of the time stairs are free.. I mean people use the escalators because they had a long walk and need to rest it for awhile right? and some elderly also uses these when elevators are not accessible.

yup! nummi got that right. That's what I would answer to taki's question. It will really get you up faster because of the combined speed. We just have to give way to these hurrying people as we ride the escalator. Sometimes I make fun of them by blocking the whole area. It's really funny because most of the time they are too shy to ask for a way, and they frantically looking for a way to slip by.

i don't see any problem with that at all... over here, you have to stand on the left side of an escalator if you are not in a hurry... and those people who are in a hurry will use the right hand side of the escalator and walk or even run upstairs or downstairs... i think it is just a courtesy thing... it is like when you are driving... if you are going to drive slowly, then you stay on the left lane and let the other drivers pass by you from the right lane... this is my opinion... take care and have a nice day...

There are a lot of people who are in a rush and you can see this a lot in our train stations. That's why there's a rule to always keep right when you're in the escalator so that you can give way to those who are rushing. But in our case, I thinks its useless for these people who are running up the escalator because once they get to the platform, the train hasn't arrived yet. So, they will just stress themselves out by looking up and down and being impatient over the trains' arrival. I don't run or walk up the escalators unless I hear the train has arrived on the platform and I am running in order to catch a ride in it.

I find nothing wrong with that.
I mean, if one could simply stand while the escalator is bring them up or down to a floor that they wish to get, its also simple to stand aside when someone wants to go ahead for some reason that perhaps concerns time that they don't have much of.
Frankly, I like using the escalator. I would even use it to amuse my nephew when we are at the mall. Its the only ride that you can take without actually paying anything. But, if someone wants to pass through, I don't really mind. It doesn't happen often at malls but, in your case, I guess I would be used to that by now.

Hi, taki_takaishi. I don't understand it either. Why would they walk up and down on the Escalator like that. It just does not make any sense at all. I thought that this is made just to stand still upon and let it take a person where it is headed towards. I think that taking the flight of stairs would make more sense if they prefer walking.

Because I think it has double purpose for them that while being hurry the escalator would help them to go up right away. I don't treat it as stairs as well because I don't really want going up manually that is why of course I like using escalator instead.

Well, that's an example of a misconception in using escalators. Escalators are used to make you reach the platform faster with or without effort. For some who are a bit in a hurry, the speed of the escalator plus their motion on it will make them reach the platform faster. People who are not, tend to just stay put and let the machine take them to the other end. :) Escalators are supposed to be used like that so don't get angry or get pissed off at once. If also you don't want people to disturb you, might as well stay on the "inner lane", (just like in express ways) the side where some also are taking it easy. :)

well i don't to that treating an escalator as an ordinary stair well because the purpose of it is to get you up or down with ease not to walk on it to go up and down just stand there well i don't know why some still do that but that mentality is so crap well cause escalator made going up and down to be simple just stand on it and it will get you up or down

It's because they are in the hurry and would like to get to the top quickly even though the escalators are running. I sometimes do that when I really am running late, but when I still have the time, I just wait until the escalator reaches the top. No sense in running and exerting my legs. Just be patient of those people who always are in the hurry...:)

Perhaps they're just in a hurry. I see people doing that because they're trying to go somewhere faster. People who are always late do that, people who have an important appointment also do that. But I don't see the point really for myself, because I always see to it that I have lot of time before the appointment starts, this way, I wouldn't really need to be in a hurry because the allotted time is enough.
Just be careful because sometimes people who are in a hurry are either people who are really busy or are thieves who just got something that's why they're in a hurry to be out of the area.

Yes like you I've seen several people using escalator that way. Its really annoying seeing people walking or running up using escalator. But sometimes maybe they just can't help it because maybe they're really in a hurry. But lets up hope they can't help people by doing that.

I also noticed that attitude of people. Every time I used escalator I noticed some men walked fast way to the top or below, they just couldn't wait to arrive, sometimes I am irritated because some of them just elbowed me without even excusing themselves. Escalator is a convenient stair where we would not use our feet anymore, but I don't get why other people treat it as a stair when they can use a proper staircase if they want to walk or run or something.

Hi taki_takaishi,
Like you, I also feel irritant to those person who use escalator as a stair. Why they bother to use the escalator if they will just use it like they are using the stairs. However, to give them a benefit of the doubt, maybe those people are twice in hurry, thats why, they use the escalator in order for them to go quickly in their destination.

Their in hurry, what else? Me, I sometimes do that, especially at the MRT station when I am about to go out. I use the escalators, yes, because I don't want to tire my feet, but when I look up at my wrist watch and it says I'll be late to my appointment or something, I hurry by taking some steps to get out of there. Of, course, I do excuse from the persons ahead of me since I'll be passing by. Just keep your cool, there's nothing to fuzz about. Just understand them.

you know why many are doing this? the answer is so simple they are all in a hurry and you know that MRT is always crowded and people use the stairs nearest to the door where they will exit so don't wonder why many is doing this, and i know you also do the same thing when you are in a hurry right?
