A lot of college degree holders find no JOB at the moment. Students learn many things in college. They are trained for many occupations. Some say that we must develop on our own our essential skills and it is necessary to find a high salary job. Some companies are after the university and not the ability! What does diploma mean?

I know that society is now telling kids in school this, but it is not true. A graduation certificate DOES NOT guarantee you a job. There are many out there with degrees that have had to take much lesser paying jobs and have not used their expensive education at all. If you want to go to college or university, you should study the marketplace and make sure there will be plenty of jobs in that area when you are finished. Otherwise you may have wasted your time and money on a useless certificate.

When you live in a country where a college diploma or transcript of records is very important and is a requirement for job hunting, well, people will do everything to get a college degree. HOwever, we all know that many college graduates are ill-equipped to handle demands in the workplace.

Hello nemarose! I think having a college degree is very important these days, but it doesn't necessarily mean though that it will get you a job. :) Having a college degree just eliminates all the others who doesn't have one, and in the tight competition in the workplace, usually most employees aim for other qualifications like a licensure examination for instance, or other professional eligibilities. :p But to me and probably to some employers, having those papers is NOT really what they're looking for.. skills and work experiences, above everything else is more important. ;) A lot of stories about undergrads who didn't make it to college have been successful. Nothing is impossible with having the right kind of sources, perseverance and faith!

Yes...of course,a college degree is a must because first and for most it will be the bases of your capacities and capabilities as a job seeker but however...one must not depend also on the degree alone. Yes it is true that students are trained and learns a lot of things in college but not everything that was trained in college will be the one that will happen in reality...It will just serve as our guide cause the real thing will be done after we graduation...sometimes we have to find, explore on our own and application of everything for us to become mature and grow as an individual. In terms of finding job, I prefer that one must have an working experience aside from the On-the-job-training, and also the guts and confidence for him/her to find jobs...

I think so... People who have college degree are having a hard time seeking for a job, how much more those who don't have the degree T_T Some people who have a degree are lucky to find some jobs usually in fast food chains or restaurants..........

It's true about what you said a lot of degree holders doesn't have a job. Is it important? For me yes, but I don't mind it. My employer hired me even if I don't have a degree. I'm a college graduate but I only took an Associate course and it's far from what I'm doing right now. If you would want to have a title on your name such as an architect, engineer, lawyer or a doctor definitely you'll need a degree. It depends on what you can do out there in your real job an the profession that you will be taking. =)

Almost three years now. Nope I'm not married, it is still far from my plans. It's true that I would want to increase my salary but that would be a different topic and option for me. Higher pay means higher responsibility, higher pay means I can compensate all the things that I/We would Need. It's not healthy if I would stay in the company for salary alone. It's more important for me the work or job makes me happy. =) am I making sense to you? I hope so it did.

A college degree is not a must nor a guarantee to give you a good job in the future. Education is the best investment for your life. It makes you as a person . . It distinguishes you from the rest ..

Its good to get an education but there are still other people who would encourage us to develop some skills. These days, getting a college degree isnt an assurance of getting a good job in the future cause there are so many graduates in a year but only a few would land in a good job. Skills are also needed cause there are also a lot of companies who are looking for people with different skills. Skills can also get you a job. So to be sure, getting an education and developing a skill is better.

I think a degree is a must if you are wanting to be specialised such as a doctor, lawyer etc. Competition is fierce in the job market but a degree shows you have the mental ability to do a job. Saying that there is a lot to be said for life experience too.

Though there are a lot of promising job that offers great salary but for me it would still be better to finish a college degree in the sense that you will be able to prepare your self more to the working environment and at the same time, you will be able to learn and acquire new skills and information that would help you in the near future

Ther are many jobs which are available are solely on merit and not on the ability ,now a days all organizations wants their staff to be fully educated with all sorts of knowledge.but they should consider the knowledge of the person and not the degree of the person...

Yes, I think a degree is important because even if we say that college graduates have a hard time finding jobs, it is still relatively easier for them to find good jobs than those who are not degree holders.Even if they can't find one right away, they can wait for an oppurtunity to come their way.

To me it's important but to some companies not really. Yes, a lot of jobs require you to have a degree but some good jobs ask for a proof of citizenship and a high school diploma; well where I am from anyway. Doing internship is good too, right? But now a days its pretty much who you know and not what you know.

It really depends on what you want to do with your life and what course you are taking up. Certainly, a college degree does not guarantee a job, BUT having a degree will work to your advantage if you're looking for a job. Top employers does not really look at the diploma of new hires, they look at your transcript of records. Of course the way you carry yourself greatly affects their decision of hiring you. If you want a high-paying job, on a prestigious firm, (plus the bonus of having the respect of your family, friends & neighbors), I advise you to work on your transcript and your winning personality. Good luck!

Hi nemarose, If you want to work at specific profession then a degree would be a must to have a higher position in that job. Profession like accountant, doctor, architect and lawyer need you to have a degree before you could attend the examination for specific license that needed before you started your practice. Job at the government also need you to have a specific qualification like degree to enable you for the higher position. You need it before you could apply for that position or if you want to be promoted to that position. But, for private sector, sometimes experiences would be look after then your degree qualification. They would prefer to employ someone who know how to do the job rather then someone who know what is the job. Some jobs like technician, mechanic and other skills job base would prefer those who have an experiences. Some job that can be done by someone with less educational background like marketing, management and sales also prefer those who have an experiences over those who has a degree.

I agree, a lot of college degree holders are jobless. A college diploma does not guarantee employment. It is a cold cruel world, and you have to be very competitive if you want to win. It means that you should not content yourself with your diploma. You have to go and get the necessary job experience (yes, even as a volunteer if you must, just to get job experience), then make yourself more marketable by developing more related skills, learn more computer related programs, and don't stop learning, if you can go for masters and doctorate degrees, go ahead. If you can, work with the best people, the best office. That will give you an edge in the competition too.

No. I don't think you need a college degree to be successful in life. Although it would not hurt to have one it could help you get a lot futher by having one, but people have been very successful without a degree. If you know what you want to do in life and have a good plan for it, anyone can be successful.
