That's not a debate, its an argument!

My brother used to "debate" with my dad over the dinner table.
And I'll say that dad stayed calm, but my brother not so much.
Soon it wasn't a discussion or a debate anymore, it was my brother arguing with my dad over something political (and people wonder why I hate politics.)
Nothing was going to change my brother's mind and nothing was going to change dad's mind, but it upset my brother that he couldn't do it.
And people wonder why I hate those, so called, talk shows, like Dr Phil and stuff and the judge shows where people are fighting over stuff.
They make my stomach hurt just hearing them. I don't understand why people want to watch that stuff.
Do you watch them? what interests you about them? Give me one good reason to want to watch people fighting!

Oh, probably vanity, when it comes right down to it. We can watch these barely sentient loons & think, "Man! How can that person be so stupid? He's said he's cheating on you, so why are you still with him??" (Smacks head)
Or, it could also be to pray for these misbegotten souls.
But I'm gonna go with vanity.

I'm not so sure all of them are real. Reports have come in that at least some of the participants are paid, & even paid extra to act up more. Worse, some have been seen appearing in various shows doing their bit, & the stories they tell are varied!
You must remember, it's all about ratings. These days, even most "news programs" have to entertain to stay on top!
Shrug. Life post-millennium, y'know? Hand me the chips 'n dip, & pass the Pepsi...

I used to like Dr. Phil, and I do feel like he puts his money where his mouth is, and helps people. I get bored with following one family and telling all of their dirty secrets, though. One of the reasons I like him is he sounds like my brother. And yes, I clam up when people want to argue, and I just crawl in my itty bitty shell. Even if it is my brother yelling at the traffic. I like honesty. No, I would not argue politics or anything else at the dinner table. Nothing good for the digestion there. I do not like Springer, or the judge shows.

My mom suffered under verbal emotional abuse at the table growing up. Table time has always been a time of peace for us. She is gone now, but it is one thing that we did well as a family. I love eating with family now, and we have really interesting discussions. Kids sure can internalize the stuff going on around them.

I'm not one to watch any kind of "argue" related show. Never watched Dr. Phil or Jerry Springer, but once in a blue moon I'll watch a judge show, and sometimes would catch some kind of show on one of the Spanish Channels where family members are fighting each other if anything its a good laugh since it's so ridiculously funny--least I think so.

Hi Elic,
I hate discussions about politics and religion, my hubbys comes in from work and start talking politics and I always says I don't understand too much about it and don't want to hear it, but he wants to argue, there is too much agressions over nothing and I hate watching anything like that, give me an old weepie any time, LOL.

I can't see how anyone would want to watch those shows either. Life is too short to spend time arguing over silly things. I hate to talk politics with anyone, because some people get so irate if you don't agree with them. I will go to great lengths not to argue with someone and I can't understand the people that seem to enjoy an argument!

I can't stand shows where people fight one another either, I think I know the kind you mean. Stage-managed if you ask me!
As for arguing in relation to politics..when I was in my teens I was quite forthright on my views regarding multi-lateral nuclear disarmament no less. I was terrified of nuclear weapons so the fact that Labour (in the 1980s) supported this was music to my ears. My Dad, on the other hand, believed every word he read in The Sun "newspaper" which was a Tory rag then and has gone back to being Tory now, the hypocrites.
The arguments we used to have about Thatcher and Kinnock, the respective leaders and the articles I read in The Mirror (still a Labour rag) and the lies spouted in The Sun were a sight to behold lol.
Nowadays I don't even read newspapers because I find them extremely boring and many journalists now just want to "rock the boat" for the sake of it. They don't really care who gets in at our forthcoming Election and, to be honest, it plays into the hands of our 3rd party the Liberal Democrats, who's leader Nick Clegg is doing brilliantly in the last 2 debates...the first we've ever had and one to go!
I don't argue with Dad anymore about politics but he has a thing about "illegals" as, like I said he believes everything he reads in The Sun. The difference now is I just let him ramble on as I'm more mature now!

nope, didn't like him then, hate him now - he's a pig
I like the brainy ones...
and I do like Matt Smith, and even Ami Pond has a lot going for her - heck, her name isn't Smith or Jones like RTD seemed to give all of them!
I'd've liked to see a young Wiff (Donna's grandfather) in the WWII epi!

The Jury is out on the new Doctor Who and I really don't like his female side-kick...and the music in the background ALL THE TIME does my head in, honestly. No need for it lol.
As for classic Trek as you put it...loved it..didn't like the latest film at all. Wasn't Shatner yummy in the early days. I can appreciate him more now as I was too young to do so..er..originally!

There is a fine line between an argument and a debate. Debates are generally done with people who have facts as well as opinions. Good debates have no "arguing". I have done debates in high school. We used to hate it when our debate teacher would make us take the other side. That will surely give a person pause to have to debate the side he is against. I debate my 2 of my sons in law occasionally. The other family members just roll their eyes. We are passionate about our views but we never let it turn into you're wrong or a shouting match. I had a husband who would arguee has no real value in these arguments. But I have to admit I actually learned some things from Dr.Phil.

I'm with you... avoid such shows or lose my mind!
Not only do I dislike the confrontational aspects, but they're really quite boring, too.

I don't understand the attraction of those shows. Just as I don't understand why people want to read trash like the supermarket tabloids. I can't see wasting time watching people argue or fight. Have you heard of Jerry Springer? On his show, things get physically violent at times. I don't know if he's still on the air but he had a huge audience! I thought that was a sad comment on the caliber of people here in this country.

I remember that phrase! My family used it often and I've shortened it to just "trash" because I've met some very nice people that live in trailers, too.

Hi, ElicBxn. I do watch talk shows every now and then. It sometimes makes me feel better to watch shows that has other people that talk about their problems. It makes me feel so much better. I feel like I am the only one that has situations that are bad. I get like this a lot and it is a plus to see others experiencing not so good times in their life. It is not fun, but it eases my mind. I like to listen to the positive advice that is given to them about what they should and should not do. I don't like to see others fighting, but just expressing their feelings to someone that can feel comfortable in confiding to. I don't talk about politics, because, it is a boring subject to me that I know little about.

I like watching Dr Phil and I don’t think people are always necessarily fighting...Or maybe they are, it depends.(LOL) I like watching Dr Phil because I have learnt quite a bit from his wisdom; I do not always like him but he is pretty spot on with his advice! The judge shows I don’t get into so much because that is only about people arguing over stuff and not much else until the judge makes a decision. I am not comfortable around folks who are arguing and I don’t like confrontation myself. I can appreciate how draining it would have been for you to put up with your dad and brother ‘debating’ on a regular basis!

I do not watch those types of shows either. And for my own piece of mind, I rarely talk about religion or politics. Those two subjects more than any other make so many people into something other that the person I'd like to know.
During the last presidential election people just went crazy, in that they were rude and pushy to people they otherwise were really nice to.
It's not worth the aggrivation. I guess I'm with you on this one!

I do not like to watch these types of programs. I have never cared for them espicaly seeing people faight over stuip stuff. the only reason I can think of why people watch them is "it is a Jerry Springer World" the bottome line it is jsut entertainment and not social work.

people screaming at each other makes my stomach hurt, I think that kind of TV is very voyeuristic and wonder at the people who watch it all the time
speaking of which, the other day Maggie had one on that the woman had one tone of voice, SCREECH!

Whilst i do find it interesting to hear different opinions on a subject it soon becomes tedious when it is obvious neither side is going to yeild. At that point people should just give it up and change the subject. I kind of see the point of having another person as a mediator or judge. I just do not understand though why people would want to go on TV and air their dirty laundry like they do.
Oddly though lots of people do enjoy watching people fight either physically and with words, I am one myself as long as it is with in reason. Some of these shows must be scripted at least in part.

I don't watch most of the political shows where people are fighting and arguing. I can't make sense of anything anyone is saying anyways...what's the point of trying to waste my time and energy trying to figure it out.
I'm not a big fan of politics....but if there is a debate on a social issue, I like to watch it...just to be aware of the pros and cons or the two sides of the coin.
But if they are also fighting over the issue, it gives me a headache and I either change channels or turn off the television.
But some people enjoy watching these 'fights'. I don't understand why and never bothered to find out either.

My husband thinks it is fun to watch people get in a fight over something - usually another person. I think it is disgraceful and refuse to watch, or even listen.

I am the type of person who likes watching debate whether it's a tv show or it happens in real life. there's something special about debate when two people just depended their views and opinions about certain topic. But i do like the healthy debate not the messy ones that will ultimately resulted to an argument or quarrel
between two contestant.
A healthy debate is what i adore and admire. In debate people can have a clearer views about certain matters and it's where topics can be discussed in elaborate manners. I especially like the fire sparkling in each contestant eyes.

debate and argument are two different things although when you debate you really argue but not as personal as you are arguing..get it?
if you're brother can't understand that then don't argue..all he needs is someone to argue with him..not debate..
love to see people fighting...boxing perhaps..i love boxing but fighting in talk?that's unethical!unless you're debating, well that's very good exercise in speaking and thinking..!
