I was reading through a friend who is unemployed since two years. Recession never quite got over her and numerous like hers who are still struggling to get a job and fighting the unemployment grants. My prayers for all those people. I was wondering about the current scenarios in different countries post recession. India, never really, got the feel of the true slump on the other hand the US is still fighting on a large scale! Two of my very close friends are virtually down to rags! What is the scenario there in your place? What is your status, if you do not mind sharing?

Im in the uk, I have just started a new job about a month ago, Im not really enjoying the job but I was unemployed for 6 months and hated it, so anything is better than not working. Its so depressing being unemployed for a long amount of time, I was applying for different jobs everyday, sending lots of applications out and not hearing anything back, thats the worst, not even having a rejection letter, I used to keep track of it all in my diary, I would write down each day what job I applied for, then I would find out the closing date of the job and put that in as well, then a week before the closing date I would call them to check they had received my app, then after closing date would call them to ask for feedback about why I had not been offered interview. If you think about it, applying for jobs everyday, thats a lot of calls to employers, and its hard trying to stay positive when you are calling to find out why there was no offer of interview. And all I was ever told was that I didnt have the skills they were looking for. So not much to work on with that. I checked about 10 different job websites a day, as well as calling some big companies to see if they were hiring, I even looked into volunteering to get some extra experience on my resume, but was offered a voluntary position at the same time I was offered my job, that actually made me feel worse, as I couldnt even get a voluntary job, I thought if I cant even get a job for free then what hope do I have? It was an awful feeling everyday. There was no point in getting up early, no point in making myself smart as I never went anywhere as I didnt have any money, and just used to stay up all night watching tv, as there was nothing else to do. It did get to the point where I hated going to the job centre, as you are lined up with some people who you know dont want to work, Im not saying everyone is like that but some people are, some people just dont want to work, and there are lots of people like that in my town, so its not nice when you are stood next to them as you worry that people will think you are like that too. So anyway sorry I kind of rambled on there, but it was a difficult time, I do understand why some people lose the will to work, you lose all your confidence, but luckily I managed to get a job, and even though its not exactly enjoyable Im a lot happier, Im mixing with more people, and making myself look smart everyday, so things are looking brighter now! Thankfully!

That's indeed a beautiful inspiration and thanks for sharing this with us. I agree, anything is better than nothing and we are opened to new opportunities, new avenues, a new job, new life. it's just a matter of time. It's hard to tell what's going on inside the close doors and the interview calls, resumes sometimes are just eye washes. Nothing more demoralising like having to queued up a bunch of people who are less qualified or not qualified at all. It kills us with a low self esteem. I am sure you will get right kind of job that suits your credentials. Thanks, thanks so much for this. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Very inspiring indeed. I have tried being unemployed for about three months and it was really depressing specially when you are already used to get up and prepare for work everyday and suddenly the cycle was stopped. But we just have to be patient and persistent and before you know it you have already landed a new job. It's a constant struggle but we can survive if we choose to.

Hi Mimpi, I am one wit you in these circle of prayer for our brothers and sisters struggling to land a job. it's really had nowadays to have one that really suits your qualification. most of the jobs available does not fit applicants. applicants are over qualified for the job. i hope employment rate will improve in our country after the may2010 election.

You are right. Job profiles mostly do not cater to the resume and many do not have any specific job description! No wonder people are losing interest and suffering from low self esteem after a while. I just wish post May 2010 election things get better for your country.

Hi mimpi! With the ever growing population number of unemployed youth is getting larger day by day. Recession did make an affect on the job market, at some of the places it was direct and at some of the places it was indirect. I think those with good professional and educational qualification were able to survive the onslaught of recession and are still managing. I understand that wages, salaries and perks were reduced by many companies and some of the employees were retrenched, unceremoniously. My heart goes to two of your friends, who are unable to find proper jobs. I think if one cannot find a job of one's choice, one needs to settle for less lucrative job to tie over the situation. It is said - "something is better than nothing". I wish all the best to your friends. Luckily, I am in such an organised sector, where our job is safe and we can feel secure about our employment. Have a great day! Deepak

You are right deepak. Even though many people are not really laid off the perks and salaries are reduced considerable - that's as bad as laying off! Thanks for your wishes, i will pass it on. And beggars cannot be choosers, luckily they have realised it now.

You are right. But then, we can volunteer for free even and gain a lot but only when we do not have to worry about our sustenance.

You are right that 'beggars cannot be choosers'. Sometimes, we need to settle for less lucrative job, even if we feel under-employed, so that we could 'earn' and gain 'experience'.

Though India did not feel the true slump still a lot of employers got an excuse to lay down staff. In our city a lot of people lost jobs in the last two years and employers are making each of their employees do the work of two. Some took the chance of removing their old staff and employing new ones at half the salary.

You are right. People are affected indirectly in terms of work pressure, less perks and no rise in the impending basic salary.

I am a nurse and one of those who are hoping to get a job in the USA. (I am from the Philippines). When I took up nursing, the demand was high then until a year after I graduated. After that, recession and retrogression came into full bloom......and that is how and why a lot of us nurses here are stuck either as unemployed or working as unpaid volunteers. After all the money and effort we spent going to school and taking all those nerve-wacking exams, we end up jobless.

We live in Kentucky and we were hit hard with the recession, but not nearly as bad as some other places in the United States. There are a lot of people that I know that lost their jobs as a result of this economic crisis and many of the people that I am referring to are still without a job. However, some other people that I know have been more lucky in this situation. The person that has been unemployed the longest has only been out of a job for the last 14 months.

Often there is want in a land of plenty, so when the US economy was strong for the middle class and the upper classes, I often struggled to make ends meet and conversely I did better during the economic downturns. When prices are low, this puts sellers at a disadvantage, but it is very good for buyers. Some jobs are recession-proof and some are not. It all depends on whose ox is gored. What troubles me is how the news tries to force everyone to be politically correct about who should get sympathy. Why should we feel any sorrier for people who are between jobs now than we did when the news stories told of good times. From experience I can tell you it is a lot harder to be down to rags when times are good than when everyone else is scared too. The reason my status is good now is that I sacrificed in ways that most people I know would consider unimaginable for longer than many of the members of myLot have been alive on planet Earth. What comes around goes around, I think.

I am glad to know this dear. You would be surprised to know the amount of extravagance and wastage that went around. It still goes but people are little scared these days. Recession is a taxing term. We here are having money laundering scam - biggest in Indian history where we have no idea as to how and where the fund came! The middle class like ours have always lived a reasonable life, trying to save as much as they could. wasting is something off the card and I have seen my parents, saving and saving more after ensuring a good life to us. Having gone by this, we have little to worry. I do feel sorry for the people who have lost their jobs though. I shouldn't be judgmental because every individual has a different story to tell. My sincere prayers..

It seems to be hard all over. Tulsa is losing a lot of jobs. I feel really bad for them and their families. We moved my son to Colorado at the end of last summer. He just got a job today in fact. HEY! I have been doing snagajob online for him at least 3 apps a week. Plus I have used 3 books of stamps mailing resumes also. He had an awful time. I haven't seen any improvement. I hope something changes soon.

In Australia it certainly is more difficult to obtain a job than it used to be but I don’t think it is as bad as some places. I say this because my sister works for an employment agency and she tells me that there are several jobs going at the moment. My heart goes out to those who have been desperately looking for work for a long time. It must feel as though life is on a hold until steady employment comes. I pray that the situation will turn around and people’s lives will improve.

Thanks Paula. Here its not that bad but there are places where it is! We still got to retain our old jobs. May be there is a slash in the perks and payment but its not that bad. Going by the extravagance that a few people resort to this is but obvious and poverty is still there as it was before.

We had a downturn here in Australia but nothing really bad. Not like a recession or anything. That is because there was actually nothing wrong with the Australian economy at the time. It just took a break as a reaction to the rest of the world economy, namely the USA! In fact, here we were hit possibly the least of any major country in the world. We were the first country to start raising interest rates again and we have had quite a few more interest rises since then. Things are overpriced here which is making it hard on a lot of people, but overall we are nowhere near as bad as other countries are financially.

Good to know that with all those price hikes, you are suffering from not a part of the slump. I think, ours economy hasn't been quite affected and we do have a huge rise in the prices of recent commodities - that's making situations really bad.

Being unemployed brings so much depression to anybody in need of job. In my case i still want to work so that i an earn a fixed income but unemployment rate here in our country is still high. Prayers do help a lot to appease ourselves in any kind of situation we are in most specially this unemployment scenario.

While last year did see the effects of the global recession to some extent here, the last quarter things have changed dramatically with regards to business and the employment. At the same time, i do wish that that the situation does change all over. The recovery process is slow in some of the countries and I do wish that the unemployment situation resolves fast. My thoughts and prayers for the people all over to affected by this.

mimpi1911 my status is sick inside for my son who has been out of work as a computer programmer for a year and a half, and for myself as I am stuck here in Gold c rest a retirement center when I would much rather be home again with my son in a two bedroom apt with him working and me on the computer and life back to normal we got behind on our rent and the manager did not wait at all to give us eviction notice. we are in the US the supposed rich country bah humbug, there are much fewer jobs than men and women looking for them and not getting them, big companies have cut back, putting even more people on the unemployment line. my prayers are joining yours as I know we a re not alone, at least my son has an gov. sponsored apt with three other men all out of work. he does come and see his mom in this tiresome =retirement center.the economy has hurt so very many people here its unbelievable.

My current status in my place now, I just worked recently. I've also been unemployed for about 8 months, but it has nothing to do with recession. It is my choice not to work. I enjoy my time to be free from all worries and pressure. Many of other countries have been affected recession, but I dont feel it in my hometown. Although I know there is huge percentage of unemployed. I know its been like that even before recession. So there is no changes.

Even we, didn't quite feel it here. A lot of things went on in the name of the recession though and some capitalised on it. But if you ask me, hardly could we feel the storm sitting here. and unemployment is soaring high but that's, as you have said, irrespective of the slump.
