Hi Java, first of all congrats on your decision, at least I hope this is why you are asking. I have been smoke free for about 7 years now and very happy I was able to finally quit.. I made the word finally in bold because it took me probably 10 plus years of a roller coaster when I tried to quit. So even if you go for a few hours, days or even weeks and you go back, don't give up.
I quit using the gum. I started out chewing a piece, (slowly, you'll get sick if you chew it fast) whenever I had a craving. After a week or two, I started alternating the nicotine gum with mint chewing gum. Then I slowly started chewing more mint than the nicotine gum and before I knew it, I was only chewing the mint gum. It was probably another year or 2 before I quit chewing the mint gum whenever a craving hit and though I still want a piece occasionally, I won't because they no longer make chewing gum with sugar, and the aspartame gives me headaches..
