We all have vices

You know it, some are illegal - drugs... Some are immoral - sleeping around... Some are fattening... well, you know... Some are just bad for you, could be illegal, immoral and fattening - drinking too much... I have a vice that isn't one of those.. Oh, its not the HEALTHIEST vice, but it isn't any of the above - its diet sodas. Now, I have a friend, and she's here so she knows who she is, that is always trying to get me to stop drinking sodas. And since I've been on this diet I have cut way back, because I've found they make me hungrier - go figure... Still, I guess I feel that if she wants me to give up my vice, than she needs to consider giving up her vice... So, do you think that's fair? Fact is, like I said, this isn't the healthiest vice, but its also isn't one of the above vices. Or am I looking at the mote in my friend's eye while not taking the log out of my own?

Well, it sounds logical to me. If she wants you to stop what you are doing and is telling you to do so. Then she needs to stop doing what ever it is that she does that she is doing that she should not be doing...right? right! Well, that's the right thing to do anyway. If she wants to have her say in what you do or don't do then she must do the right thing herself!

I think so too, it only seems fair to me that if you (in the generic sense) want me to give up my vice, than you (again) consider your vices...

You are right. People shouldn't try and make people change when they won't change themselves.

I just can't get worked up about all the "evils" of soda - at least they are DIET sodas!

I only drink 7up. The Public Health Nurse told me it is the best one, because it is clear, they can't hide all the junk in it they do in all the others. Plus, she said it has electrolytes. You couldn't force poison aspartame down my throat in any form whatsoever.

I think it's only natural to keep one's vice aside...and your friend should do it too, if you have managed to do that successfully.

I read your discussions because of your English. I get to learn the expressions and usage, something I dont really get to even hear in English movies. :) As to vices, I think we all get to live just once. We never know when we will kick the bucket. If we are not likely to trouble another person because of our vices, why not. :) That is my stand on this. :)

I'm glad that you like my use of the language, the mote and log is a biblical thing, about not correcting someone when you have a bigger problem.

I have a friend that is addicted to diet Coke. She has been told to cut back on caffine, but she says the caffine free variety isn't the same. It may be the caffine that she is addicted to. I think it is only fair that if your friend wants you to give up yours she should give up hers. I'm not sure what my vice would be. It may be starlight mints. I have cut back on them a lot, but it was very hard. The only other thing may be chocolate or some kind of dessert. I always give up desserts for Lent and I can't wait till Easter, so I can eat sweets again!

I think giving up diet soda would be a great idea. Though I shouldn't judge as I work 2nd shift and I need caffine to stay awake that late as the rest of the week when I'm home I'm not up nearly that late. As for your friend giving up her vice, it depends what it is and if it's bad for her as well as keeping her from a goal then it would be a good idea for her to do that as well.

What is her vice? And I think giving up the diet sodas is a very good idea. I thought aspartame was a cancer causing agent. Try taking some Cannabis instead. It has been shown to reduce, prevent put some cancers into remission. As well as many other health benefits. It is not pharmaceutical, but a natural, organic herb used for centuries by many cultures. California is on the verge of legalizing it.

I'm not going to say what her vice(s) is. That's not my place to tell. However, I'm a control freak and I don't drink booze so I don't lose control, needless to say that I'm not going to smoke (or eat or otherwise injest) pot.

I have done it. I like to be in control. Besides, I'm in Texas and it isn't even medically legal here.

It is legal for medicinal purposes. Your doctor could approve an application for you to have it dispensed to you, if it would help. It was just a suggestion. I fully believe that Holistic Naturopathic methods are the best way to go nowadays. Big Pharma companies don't truly seem to be interested in what helps or cures ailments. I almost think they want to keep you sick so that they can continue to be your supplier and make more money. *sigh*

Diet sweeteners do make you hungrier. When I gave them up I stopped having cravings. As for you giving up your vice, never mind what your friend is doing. If you want to give them up for yourself, give them up. If not, then not.

Thanks, I have on a good week, maybe 4, and by good, I mean I get a LOT of soda - mostly I'm drinking Crystal Light or iced tea (tho when it was cold, the tea was hot!)

Most of us are old enough to choose for ourselves. It's a fundamental freedom...and...we KNOW, what if any, our choices or options can or cannot bring us...harmful or otherwise. But they're ours to control, either to habitually keep, or break. WE choose the consequences. Vices? Uh uh. OPTIONS! Always. Me? I was always kind of partial to Crocket & Tubbs, of Miami Vice TV fame. cdrxo

I never got into that show, and I agree, that it is a choice, and I personally think diet soda is a pretty tame vice.

hello ElicBxn.. this is the absolute first time that i'm on the open mike interests group.. and your discussion is darn interesting . being that over inquisitiveness is one of my vices, i'm very curious about what's your friend's vice...you didn't mention it anywhere anyway..i'd choose the 'eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, and vice for a vice' option. if she wants you to lose something, then she got to lose something too..

I didn't mention it because she's here on mylot and that is for her to jump in on if she wants to (she hasn't yet)

hehe... so she's here on myLot? then point her here.. i mean, fair is fair isn't it. if she wants you to lose a vice, then she's got to give up something too. then it's not much of a sacrifice on one part but more of a mutual compromise

I'm not talking about diet sodas - I'm talking about vices!!!! She has one that, honestly, makes drinking diet soda look like child's play.

Diet sodas! Fancy that! I am totally addicted to Diet Coke and while I was pregnant it was the only thing I had that was not healthy; I ate well and got plenty of rest but I just could not give the Diet Coke! It probably would be a good idea to quit or at least cut down...I will if you will (LOL)! I do agree that if your friend really wants you to give up she should do away with her bad habits at the same time. It reminds me of when my husband and I first met; we were both smokers and he kept on trying to get me to give I up by telling me it didn’t look nice for girls to smoke, all this is while he puffed away! Needless to say I did give up when he did!

Well, for me... I eat a lot! and I mean a lot! I really cant help it. I love eating and it makes me happy. However I should be doing ways on how to cut my eating habit. As early as now, I should be more health conscious. I know sooner or later I will be unhealthy so right now, I'm doing my best to eat only healthy foods and cut the food in take once in a while. Wish me luck guys! Happy mylotting!

Eating should be more about fueling the body than making you happy, but it has for too long been a "reward" so it makes us feel good while we are eating it.

Personally, i would not stop. I mean, its just diet soda. It wont kill you. But this person obviously cares about it and sees that sodas are affecting you in a negative way. If its that important to them just stop and find something else to drink. I used to be the same and i found an alternative for sodas, Apple Juice. And apple juice goes god with just about anything...but that depends on the person. Also just to add to the vice, Sodas are known to rot your teeth causing more dental problems.

there's no sugar in diet sodas, and my dentist would rather I drink a diet one to a sugared one - Apple juice is good, but it also has a lot of sugar in it, so, I have actually already cut down on sodas and am drinking tea and crystal light.
