I don't like instant potatoes. Although I have had some that tasted ok I prefer to peel my own and have 'real' mashed potatoes. I always cook them with salt and pepper but sometimes I add garlic powder and diced onions to my water when cooking them. What is your preferences?

I am not really into mashed potatoes. I prefer to fry it and make it like french fries. Also, frying it with mayonnaise, mustard, curry powder with garlic and onions. Tastes spicy and makes me want to eat more.

I love deep fried (french fries) potatoes unfortunately they are not good for me!! I like pan fried with onions, I guess those arn't healthy either. Seems like everything that taste good isn't healthy!!!! thanks for the response.

The only health problem I have is high cholestrol and the french fries are on the do not eat page of my diet. Right along with all the other deep fried foods that I like so well, like shrimp, chicken, donuts, etc!!!!!
If it wasn't for my cholestrol I would be in perfect health...except for sinus allergies. Very fortunate for my age. Thanks for asking!!!

I prefer real mashed potatoes. I don't even buy instant. I'm pretty boring though, I just cook them in plain salt water.

I know there are some recipes for instant pottatoes that would not work with the real ones. I don't like warmed up mashed pottatoes and now see them in the store and think you have to be kidding.
I got the idea of using the garlic powder because my daughter had bought some instant that was seasoned with them, tasted better then regular instant. I started doing it when the potatoes were 'old' and I wanted to cover up that stale taste.

My step-mother made a dish that called for instant potatoes. Once she made it with real mashed potatoes and it really didn't work well at all. That's the only time instant was better than real!
Oh, and I'm going to try the garlic because that does sound really good!

The only thing instant potatoes are good or is maybe just maybe thickening soup or gravy if it is too thin. Now days I don't peel my potatoes any more. It's too hard on my hands. I like the peeling anyway so does my family good fiber there. I just wash and scrub them real good cut them up and boil them, the get the hand mixer out and whip them up,add some butter milk and salt and pepper and they are ready to eat.

I mash mine with Promise margarine. I cook them in the salt and pepper and never add extra, but I can tell when they are cooked without the salt and pepper. I don't like added salt. I used to much margarine one time when I was making them and discovered I liked them better that way. I have never used the instant for thickening, I always use corn starch. Thanks for your response.

I am like deebomb, and I will smash my potatoes, skin on. Do that for potato salad as well. I like the baby red ones for smashed potatoes. Definitely the real deal

We almost never have mashed potatoes. They just are not my hubby's favorite. I like my potatoes microwaved and eaten skin on, smashed with a fork or whatever. Instant mashed potatoes are good to roll chicken pieces in and oven fry, before the liquid is added to the mashed potatoes, when they are just dry flakes.

I roll my chicken in the dressing without moisture. Then add a pat of margarine on top and then make gravy and bake it. I know they use to use corn flakes and I tried it once but thought it was sweet and the corn flakes were expensive so never did it again. Thanks for the response.

I do not oven bake often, but I did this for a huge family reunion. I did not like the cornflakes, or Shake n Bake, because of the sweetness.

I'll happily eat and enjoy instant mashed potatoes, but I always mix something in. A favorite combo is butter, ranch dressing, and bacon bits.
But as most are seeming to agree, nothing beats real mashed potatoes. I even like when bits of skin are left in, it's a nice change in texture. Ranch is still pretty tasty on homemade mashed potatoes, but usually butter and a bit of garlic salt is more than enough.

I have never liked instant potatoes either. I have a recipe for sheperd's pie that calls for them on top but i don't keep them on hand so usually just make my own.

I prefer the real thing. Though if I don't have the time to make the real deal I usually use instant. I keep both 10# bag of potatoes plus 2 boxes of instant in the pantry.

I have never bought instant! Thought about it especially when I was working and the fresh ones get old in the winter but then I started adding a little diced onion and garlic powder to them and it took that 'old' taste away. Thanks for your response.

i prefer real mashed potatoes, i cant deal with instant mashed potatoes, they dont taste the same to me, and with real mashed potatoes, you can add any ingredent you like and i often like to make them lumpy :) so i think using real potatoes is better you can make a wider varitey

Hi Wandalie, I so agree with you. They are certainly much healthier. When I made them in the restruant all they did was heat water and pour the instant potatoes in. Smelled like baby formula to me! Yuck!!! Thanks for your response!!

I'm not a big fan of either but I will eat them. I find that instant potatoes come out better though. Fresh mashed potatoes can come out lumpy and lumpy I don't like. This is why I usually stick to baked potatoes instead.

I think the only time I have made lumpy mashed potatoes was when the potatoes were not completly done. Thanks for the response.

There is no comparison! Only real, fresh potatoes are worth eating, even in the most complicated and overseasoned recipes. You cannot mask the taste and consistency of instant mashed potatoes. They taste sort of like the cardboard box or container they come in. They are watery and bland and do not have the body of real potatoes.
My mom had to eat them all the time when she was diagnosed with an ulcer years ago. She did not enjoy her food at all and always felt deprived. Now, of course, they know more about ulcers and this is not the way they are treated.
Mashed potatoes, made with lots of butter, sometimes roasted garlic, sometimes sour cream and/or s&p and other seasonings and lots of good gravy are a wonderful comfort food. There are even restaurants that specialize in mashed potatoes with different toppings, like cheese, ranch dressing, other sauces and condiments. Yummy.
Yukon Golds are especially flavorful.

I bought Yukon Golds once and made scallopped potatoes out of them. Took forever for them to cook so never did bought them again. Don't think I even tried them for mashed potatoes. I love the red potatoes but usually I just by Iowa potatoes. Thanks for your response.

Hi Christmas..Ya know, if never ceases to amaze me why anyone would spend their money on instant potatoes when real ones are so easy to make and so much better. There is no comparison in my view. Especially mashed potatoes..those fake things remind me of school and hospitals... I hate that shiny look they have..what the heck chemical is that anyway? Thats what my family called them, "chemical potatoes" Anyway, why make those companies rich when the real thing is so available and so good for you, chemical free...

Hello sulsisels, I so very much agree with you. I use to hate to peel the potatoes but I have gotten over that, after having 5 kids!!! I also don't like the boxed scallopped potatoes...my grandson is so picky about what he eats and my daughter, his aunt, made the boxed scalloped potatoes one day and he wanted to know what they were and she told him "Potatoe Chips"...he ate them and thought theywere great so since he was staying with me I thought I would buy them and make them but I couldn't find them in the store so I called her and asked her about it...I thought that was the name of them...it wasn't!!!! She still teasses me about that!!!

Thank you. When I joined MyLot I was looking for recipes from around the world for our church Christmas program.
I am really trying to eat more natural, healthy foods. My dr wasn't happy with my cholestrol #'s. Thanks for your response.

I agree with you so very much. I was expecting a lot of 'I prefer instant cause I don't like to peel potatoes' and noone has said that. Glad to know you use 'the real thing', my daughters used instant and I think they have gone back to using potatoes. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your response. Don't you beat the instant mashed potatoes? I only made them when I was working. My daughter uses the mixer to mash potatoes.
