Dear myLotters, it is amazing to see how one discussion gives rise to another one. While I have been replying to different discussion that I started, I have been thanking myself for taking the typing course at an early age. Now my speed is above 40 words per minute... It helps me a lot at office and at myLot...
Please share with us, how good you are at typing? Have you taken the course? What is your speed right now??? Please share... Thank you...

Hiii Miss.. Thanks for sharing... Typing with 2 fingers isn't bad.. Try to use all 10 fingers whenever you are typing... Trust me that will increase your speed and then take short lessons of typing.. Within one year, your speed will be higher...
Happy Weekend to you too...

40 words a minute is about average. Not bad. I probably type 60-70 WPM now. I type and look at the tv and no errors. Sometimes the computer goes slower than my hands can type. I think it freezes up but I like to think this way. Hehehe I have software that helps your speed. It is fun too.

Hello Friend.. Thanks for sharing... I know 40 wpm is pretty slow, and I am improving too... I guess, I'll be typing at 60 wpm in a few months... I have experienced this- the computer gets slower than my fingers... LOL... yeah, it has happened many times that I went on typing and after a few seconds the whole line appeared on the screen...
Have fun!!!

Yep, that is what happened to me! And several times I had to wait more than just afew seconds. Ugh! Those typing tests really help you improve your WPM.

I love typing and this is one of the main skills that I have. I have been typing for many years and I'm so grateful to have this skills as it makes things so much easier when it comes to posting and writing letters. I'm not sure what my typing speed is but I would say it was pretty fast. I would say that 40 words per minute would be the very minimum speed I would type at. I learnt how to type professionally when I was sixteen. I went to a Business Administration college and this is where I learnt how to touch-type as it's properly known. I no longer look at the keyboard and instantly know where all the keys are located. I think that this is a very important skill to have in today's day and age. Andrew

Hi Andrew... Thanks for sharing... Seems as if you enjoy typing a lot... I love typing, too... If you 40wpm is the minimum for you then, I am sure your speed must be somewhere around 60wpm by now...
Touch-type is like a magic for those who are not acquainted with it... My friends are always amazed to see the way I type... Sometimes, I type so fast that I have to pause and think for, what more should I write... I Love this art...
Have fun!!!

hi mr_pearl,
I started to enthusiastic about typing when my teacher gave me a project in which we are not allowed to do it handwritten. We don't have any computer or typewriter that time. I was so excited when my mom was able to borrow a typewriter for me. I did my project right away and practice typing. I did not know that there are some letter assigned for each of our fingers. I just memorize the positions of the letters and thinking I was a secretary.. I started to learn the proper typing style when I was 14 years old. My sister introduced me a friend of hers who owns a computer shop. He is very kind with me and he taught me the proper way of typing. From that time, I started to become good in typing. My speed that time is 25 words per minute. As of now it is 35 words per minute. I can conclude that my work online makes me a fast typist. It is because if I want to earn more I must know how to type faster.

I am very good at typing. I know my typing speed but would know whats is a good typing speed. A good, passing typing speed is about 35 wpm today. Isn't it? My speed is also the same. It varies sometimes it is 35, 37 and sometimes its 34.. I have been doing a few tests and on average I get about 36 wpm with around 98% accuracy. A good typing speed is generally considered to be between 40-50 words per minute (wpm), again with a high accuracy level. I am just trying and I will soon reach to that level. Thanks.

Yes, I took typing in high school, and then later another course. I had to type 45 words a minute to get a job, at that time (over 25 yrs ago) I tested at 53.
I, however, did data entry for the last 15 years of my working for the state, and I have no clue what my typing speed is now. I do know that I seem to type faster on the computer...

Hello ElicBxn... Thanks for sharing... It is wonderful that your speed was 53 wpm 25 years ago.. I guess you must have worked on TyperWriters then, as computers came pretty late into our daily lives... I have worked on TW before and would think that my fingers were going to break... ... Typing on a computer is wonderful, just touch the key and it is printed...
I am sure after working for 15 years as a Data entry operator, your speed must be 80 wpm or more than that.... Wonderful Sir... Hats off...

If I am typing from memory, like when I am writing or something like that, I can average 40-50 words per minute. However, for some reason, if I am typing something from a book or other material, like you have to do when you take typing tests, I can only manage to get about 35 words per minute...

Hi, mr_pearl. I am at 35 wpm right now. About 11 years ago, my speed was, 13 to 15 wpm. It has improved greatly since then. I would like to be at 55 wpm. I can't type without ever looking at the keyboard. On some of the letters I can do that. I have taken typing courses while I was in high school, but it did not help me that much. Even in college, it was still hard, no matter how much help that I have received.

Hi Cream.. Thanks for sharing... 11 years of practice is certainly very good and 35 words per minute isn't a bad speed, trust me! You have improved from 13 to 35 wpm... Isn't that great?
Taking the typing lessons isn't really simple, at least in the beginning... One needs to make one's self acquainted with A S D F and their respective fingers... That is the toughest thing... But once we're through with it, we get used to it... The benefit of taking the lessons is that that one can type without looking at the key board and this comes only through practice... If you have taken a few lessons earlier, then you can still do it with comfort and within a few months, you will be able to type without looking at the key-board... There are many courses available in the market... Good Luck!!! Have a great time!

Hiii Yugasini... If you have been typing for these many years, then I am sure your speed is more than 40wpm by now... I mean, I have this speed within a few years.. You have spent 39 years... It must be a great speed now... Accuracy gets hampered only when the mind is troubled and the typist can't concentrate on his/her work... But that is just temporary... it'll go away soon...
Happy Weekend...

Hi Ifa... Thanks for complimenting... Yes, I have a little advantage... But you know what, there are people with 60 wpm or 80 wpm too... And yet, it is of little use, as my brain doesn't run as fast as my fingers . The ideas come a little slowly... so many times, I simply pause while I am typing and sit like a statue, thinking what to type... LOL
Thanks for sharing my friend... Have a great weekend...

I've actually never taken a typing course, I am a self taught typist. However, I really am a good typer and my average typing speed is about 65 words per minute with an error rate of 1-2 miskeys in that period of time. I've taken a course in medical transcription and am hoping to be able to find a job in that field sometime in the near future because I really enjoy doing anything that has to do with typing as it is relaxing to me.

Hiiii. ... Thanks for sharing... Self teaching definitely helps a lot... You can take the typing course at home only these days, there are many softwares around for that... Medical Transcription is something that requires, I have heard, good listening skills and typing speed at the same time... Its a tough job... Congrats!!!

I took typing course when I was young say almost 60 years ago. At that time I attained about 40 wpm. Since my line of working did not involve much typing the speed dropped to about 25 wpm. This gives me good enough support to carry on my typing needs, personal or professional. I try to be as accurate as possible both in spelling, grammar and language. Mine is blind touch typing, I am sure you understand. I have seen quite a few people typing with only 2 fingers, one from each hand and yet type pretty fast, almost at 40 or more wpm!

Hi Hanuma... I can understand that with time and lack of practise, the speed can drop. It has happened to my father too... He was a good typist when he was young, but then he got promotion and didn't use the typewriter much... so he lost all the touch with it.. Recently he bought a computer at home and found it hard to type at his own speed.. He says he remembers the keys, but can't be too fast on them... Moreover, the keys of typewriting machine and a computer are quite different... He is used to press the button deep... His is also blind touch typing and mine too; so I know what you are talking about... It is fun to see the amazement on my friends' faces when I start typing... :)
I wonder, how can someone type with only one finger at 40... Boy, if they used all their fingers then their speed would be above 100.. Wish I could see one typing like that ...
Thanks for sharing.. .have a good time!

Hi mr_pearl. My case is also like that of your father's. Computer keyboards are different from the ancient mechanical keyboards. Even in those old keyboards some were designed for soft touch and those of us who used them found it easier to adapt to the computer keyboards. By and large the layout of all the keyboards remain the same. Slight adjustments to place fingers may be needed for the blind touch typing. My daughter is very fast in typing. But the way she hammers on the keys, I get very annoyed. A microsoft keyboard makes rattling sound. Can you imagine.
Thanks to you also for the response. Good luck.

I have never taken a typing course. I learnt typing from chatting.
I think my speed is about 30 words. I can type while my mother-in-law dictates. So, I guess I type quite good. I still have to look at the keyboard sometimes. I know I don't type the correct way, but I don't think it really matters. I am not looking for a job as a typist anyway.

Hi zralte and ellickmicheal... Thanks for responding..
Yes, chatting is a fine way to improve one's speed. And in any case 30 wpm is a nice speed... It is not about English being mother language... It is a mechanical thing... To learn to type systematically, one needs to know only the 26 alphabets of English. Do try it, it is wonderful...
Have a great time!

Hi mr_pearl, I don't know how fast I can type currently. I find I can type myLot posts without looking at the keyboard fluently. before writing posts at here earlier, I had to spend considerable time to type a single post just containing a few lines of content. I always made tapos. After having lots of practice typing posts here during my leisure my typing skill improve very fast. I'm quite satisfied with the my typing speed now.
I didn't taken any typing course before. But I had attended the typing lessons for a couple of weeks during my secondary school days. We learned the skill of typing following the lessons from a book given. I still remember we asked to do plenty of practices typing the same words asd, jkl, etc Anyway I have great interest to know my typing speed
Happy posting.

Hello lkbooi... Yes, we start with 'asdf' and ';lkj'... That is the first lesson when one starts with the course... I agree with you that posting here in myLot improves the speed a lot... I spend hours online, when I have time to write here... It improves my speed, keeps me away from worries and stabilizes my mind... I love this site...
Thanks a lot for sharing... Have a great time!

I taught myself to type using a portable typewriter that my parents gave me as a present when I was a teenager. I've no idea what my speed is but I think that it varies from not very fast to slow I type fast enough for my needs and that enough for me.

Hello Friend... thanks for sharing... I remember using typewriter before a few years. I learned typing on a typewriter only... Those were old and rusty ones and I had to press they key with efforts, to get it printed.... I learned in 4-5 months..
If your speed is satisfactory for you then, you really don't need to worry about it... Also with practise it'll improve a lot...
have fun!

Several years ago when I first started using a computer, I thought it would be a good idea to do a typing course, but decided to use a book called, RSA Typing and Wordprocessing Workbook. The book contained exercises to practice touch typing, without looking at the keyboards. I practiced this just 20 minutes each day and my typing skills improved dramatically. I think maybe I was already used to not looking at my hands whilst learning to play a piano from the age of about 8 years old and I found typing pretty easy.
I don't know what my speed it right now, because I tend not to check it, but my wife tells me I am pretty fast and I am satisfied that I can quickly type out my ideas without taking so much time that I lose them! _Derek

Hi Derek... Thanks for sharing... it is wonderful to know that you have learned touch typing on your own... Not many people have been able to do that... It requires a lot of patience and strong will... I congratulate you buddy... You have done a wonderful thing... The more your practise, the better your speed will get.. And to practise, all you have to do is to log in on myLot and start posting...

hi mr pearl,
i do have taken typing lessons when i'm in college but i think it didn't help me a lot. though i remembered once i applied for a certain company as data encoder, there we tested our typing speed,i've known my typing speed was 30 wpm.that was really like years ago,and i don't know now if i was able to type more than 30wpm.
i can't type without looking at my keyboard.
but i do have a friend who really is very good at typing.
he's been addict to the computer game called typing maniac and i guess he's really the best when it comes to typing! i mean,he didn't even look at the keyboards while typing and i guess he's 60wpm,i don't know!
but i do call him when i'm in college and i have something to type, well im a slow typer back then than now.
sometimes my typing speed depends also on my thinking.like here in mylot,if i know what to type,i can say i'm fast with it.but when i'm out of words, how can i type with that?right?
i hope i can be as fast as my friend does when it comes to typing!

Hi Annavi... Thanks for sharing.. I guess, I am somewhat like your friend. I type without looking at my keyboard. My speed is improving a lot too, day by day... I think, you can also do it.. If you have taken a regular course, then it will be really simple for you. All you need to do is to practise typing a lot... The more you practise the better will be your speed and you won't have to depend upon others for your work...
Have a Happy Weekend...
