is it true that fish swim in their own pee?

i've always been wondering about this ever since i got an aquarium with a bunch of gold fish and some other fish in it.. they always swim around with their mouth open, so they must be drinking right? and do fish even pee? because obviously they don't have a leg to raise, or a urinal to go to, and they always smell fishy so i can't exactly tell the difference. i say that they do swim in their own pee....if anyone agrees, please let me know that i'm not just imagining things. if anyone knows otherwise, please prove me wrong.. :) thanks & happy myLotting !

As i understand it they do pee in the water, sweetie. Disgusting, if you ask me. And now they wonder why i don't eat fish at all. TATA.

well, if there was a way to do it, i'm sure that the fish might choose to pee out of water so that they don't need to swim in it :) *hehe...

Depends on the type of fish you are talking about. In this case, goldfish right? Goldfish is a freshwater fish so they don't really drink the water. I think they open their mouths to let water in so that it could pass through their gills and respiration could occur. Saltwater fish on the other hand, drinks a lot of water because the surrounding water is saltier than their bodies so this means water will be going out of their body because of osmosis. On the question whether or not fish urinates, yes, fish do urinates. As per the statement above, saltwater fish urinate a little and freshwater fishes urinate a lot.

As I have read on a Yahoo! Answer... Fish do pee... yet it is through their gills. They drink the water and release it on their gills just when they got the oxygen they need. Moreover, they secrete waste on their gills through their bloodstream. The ammonia compound is their urine formation which you can see on the aquarium the moss thing (I guess) before the proper bacteria formed. Well with that... they do swim on their own pee yet their gills released it immediately once drank. Good thing it doesn't reach their internals. Only the oxygen does. Still eww...

and the gills can do all that automatically? wow, if there's only a way where our noses can filter out all the smelly smells...that would be great ! :)

From what I've read, fish do pee. The amount and how often depends on the type of fish. They poo in that water too as I'm sure you've seen. That's part of why it's important to get a filter and to also replace the water often. Especially with gold fish. They seem to dirty up our fish tank water the quickest.

ehmm... this is a very interesting question... i never think about this because i never have a fish before as a pet... but i guess that they do pee and yes, they do swim in their own pee unfortunately... :-( yuckkk... :-) as you say, we can find the difference because they always smell fishy anyway... take care and have a nice day...

hi mario, ya, they must swim in their own pee. and ya, they probably drink it too. I mean really what choices do that have? I think they must pee. I know they poop so it just stands to reason that they would. they probably drink in a good amount of their own poop as well. Poor little creatures.

LOL! This is funny! i never think that fish also pee, it was just your imagination i think, fish didn't have urinal to pee, it's true that they mouth always keep open and close, but every water that comes to their mouth is out to their gill Happy mylotting, you make me awake from the sleepy eyes!

let's see now...water goes in mouth, exits gills, gets filtered a bit in the gills.. my next sub-topic is gonna be,"what happens when the fish's gills filter their own pee water?"... oh no..that just sounded sooo wrong on so many levels for me :D

for the fishes in the sea, in open waters, i really don't know, but for the aquarium fishes I guess it is right, because they swim actually in the same water, which doesn't get filtered!

Fish always open their mouth while swimming its because that is where they get oxygen from water for them to breathe and the carbon dioxide will go through their gills.
