Inadequate sleep can make you fat?

Inadequate sleep is a risk factor for childhood obesity, especially among boys, says a new study.
The research says, adolescents who don't get enough sleep may gain weight.
Child Health, Behavior and Development depends lot on their sleep and other day to day activities.
Have you seen someone very fat around you and started thinking as to why that fat?
There are very thin people as well and they will start sleeping less to get fat but that will not help.
I thought sleeping affect our mind and not the body but they are support system for each other.
Do you think sleeping has that much impact on becoming fat or thin?

Hey, AjaySinghBaghel
If you ask me it doesn't really make sense. I would think that since you sleep in the night, you consume less energy to breathe, so you wouldn't loose much weight at all. So therefore, if your awake your obviously doing more actions, which results in a greater loss of energy. I don't know, but i guess i can never know. This reasoning isn't logical if you ask me. Anywho, i respect fat and thin, i have thin and fat friends - i couldn't care less about their weight.

This is something I read on a daily news website and I do believe that Sleep has affect to our health. I cannot work beyond 11 pm in the night. Once I tried a night shift job and everyday it was like looking at watch to see the morning.
Thanks for the response.

I seriously doubt it, when they say it makes you fat, first how and how much. How much of a contributor it is? How would you determine how sleep contributed to gaining wait. There have been many instances when I didn't sleep very well for whatever reasons and had no impact on weight, rather on occasions the contrary.
It might have some impact on your bodily systems, maybe changes in hormones for example that might have some impact but doesn't necessarily mean it'll be weight gain. I'm definitely skeptical.

I think the whole body system is around the stomach and because of not sleeping we may have some trouble in the stomach and that will lead to unwanted things.
Scientists can tell us better but for a good health sleeping is a mandatory thing we should be doing.
Thanks for the response.

hi yes I am here in the US and have read about studies a few years ago that stated not getting enough sleep makes you gain weight from the damnmable hormone cortisol and when you get fat from that it also triggers the cells in our muscles not to let insulin carrying sugar molecules into the muscle cells at all. thus sugar remains in our blood where it does all sorts of harm to our bodies, of course you know this is diabetes.so I can see it affecting young people too.the study I am referring to was down with a bunch of middle aged men and women, a lot of them became diabetic.

There is also a link the other way. Obesity can cause inadequate sleep through sleep apnea. This is where you stop breathing when asleep, and this wakes you. It is more common in obese and overweight people.
The resulting poor quality sleep means sleep apnea sufferers can fall asleep during the day, and it also can cause other health problems, including gout.

Our bodies’ major activities, including temperature regulation, hormone secretion, and brain chemistry production, run on a 24-hour cycle. When our bodies aren’t in a regular sleep pattern (think jet lag), hormones that regulate whether we feel full or hungry get out of whack, so all of our normal cues for eating are altered. An undiagnosed medical illness might also cause poor sleep habits. Someone with an underactive thyroid gland, for instance, will feel fatigued and gain weight. And someone who suffers from sleep apnea will wake up repeatedly during the night.

Great analysis, there may be chances of medical illness causing less sleep and that can be cured with the root cause only. Sleep well and feel well.

in my case and my experience i get thinner at times when i don't get enough sleep and gain weight whenever i sleep early. i was thin since i was a little . i like to gain some weight for me too like better and to fell more confident about myself.no matter how many food intake im getting i can't manage to gain some weight. well even if i do, i would still loose it a few days onward . i dont now why, i also even went to a doctor to take action on my condition.luckily i don't look too thin. im just an average. but i would difini9tely look better if i gain some weight .my doctor suggest me to eat as often as i could and not to stress myself. fats which i won;t consume will make me fat so got to earn some carbohydrates if i really wabt to get that fat i wanted for so long.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I wish you gain some weight but do not become fat. I guess you are underweight and that is because Dr suggested so. So keep going for a good health.
Thanks for the response and wish you good health.

I've read of not sleeping enough making adults fat, but not children. It probably works the same way, though. It's thought that the reason adults gain weight when they don't get enough sleep is because food equals energy in our subconscious minds, so when we're tired, we tend to eat more.
I'm sure it works the same way for children.

I am not sure if that is true but one thing is sure that we should get enough sleep to be healthy and efficient.

Loss of sleep does affect how our body reacts in terms of weight. For girls, it also makes them bloated and retain more water. The loss of sleep affects the productions of hormones that regulate our metabolism and weight.

i also don't think so. i mean, i usually sleep late at night, and i don't get fat as of now. hehe. but i think, that is somehow to do with the genes. it might be true to others as well. but i just don't think it would be true to me. hehe.

Sleeping late night you do not sleep enough, you get your quota of sleep, may be day or night however night is preferred for sleep.
May be not true because you sleep well may be late night :)
Thanks for the response.

Adequate sleep is mandatory for healthy mind and body. This is en eternal truth. The sleep gives us opportunity to relax our tired mind and body so that we can get charged up for next day.
Lack of adequate sleep may affect our organs as because of lack of rest.
But how does it make us fat is not understood. If you kindly share something more about the "New Study" you have mentioned, we will be helped and remain grateful.

I really have no idea about the relationship between sleep and fatness or thinness of one's body. Perhaps when people or kids are awake, they have the tendency to munch or eat more, they tend to eat while doing their activities while awake. So I think that explains why.

You might be right but not getting enough sleep is surely related to unhealthy, may not be just fat. Even if does not make one fat but affect adversly, there is a problem. We should sleep well.
Thanks for the response.

I think inadequate sleep has a lot to do with obesity, depression, and many other problems.
My personal experience with weight gain and depression is directly related to lack of sleep.
It doesn't surprise me inadequate sleep would be a risk factor for childhood obesity.
Why it is so, especially among boys? I don't know. Perhaps there were more hormonal changes with boys for the ages they studied.
In general, I don't jump on for every study I read about. But when it "hits home" with my personal experience, I tend to get on board.

Living a healthy lifestyle of eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep can ward off all sorts of medical problems. Especially obesity. So yes, whether or not you are getting enough sleep does impact your weight. Sleep is not just for the mind, it's for the body. It's to rest and to get you recharged and ready for the next day. Some people will have trouble gaining weight and some people will have trouble losing it no matter what they do. We're all different and our bodies required different things. But across the board, the best health tips are to eat right, exercise, and sleep.
