i DON'T KNOW WHY THIS CROSSED MY MIND TODAY . i GUESS BECAUSE IT'S SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET, Along w/my career of doing hair for 47 years, owning an antique store for 15 years , i worked in a convenience store as a 2nd job. They are a dangerous place to work & if u work in one please be careful. If u ever have a gun pointed in your face like i did PLEASE do exactly what the robber tells u to do. Has this ever happened to any of u?? scary, isn't it??

Owning the antique store must have been awesome!!!!! That would be my second Ideal job and I would so love it I would probley be willing to work for free!!!!
back to the subject!!!! When my girls were 2 and newborn, I worked 3rd shift in a truck stop. I had enough seniourity that I had Friday and Saturday nights (bar crowds) off!!!! (no dumb blonde here!) When I went in one Sunday night we had a lot of extra police cars and I asked about it and they told me that they had almost been held up the night before, that they had found a handgun in the womens bathroom! I turned in my two week notice, I had 2 little girls at home that needed their mother a lot worse then I needed that job!!!

I really enjoyed the antique store even tho it was alot of hard work. I had the beauty shop & antique store in the same building so it kept me pretty busy.
i'm glad u got out of the truck stop. They are dangerous places to i would think. I never went back to work in a convenience store either, My youngest was just a baby & i felt the same way u did. Have a good night.

I worked at 3 different truck stops in our area, as waitress, and I never had any problems with any of them. I worked all 3 shifts. In fact the one that was almost robbed was my favorite. It was just what happened scared me so much that I quit then went to work at the one closer to home. Then after my husband and I got married, he didn't want me working and we had 5 kids between the yours, mine & ours, so I was really busy at home with all of them. Then I took care of my mom and dad too.

I don't blame u for not wanting to. I was alot younger then & WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING. i WAS LIVING IN MEMPHIS AT THE TIME. i MOVED HOME & WENT BACK TO DOING HAIE AS a full time job. A robber hasn't got too much sense to rob a convenience store. If u are doing what u are suppose to u have very little money in your register. If i was going to take a chance of robbing something it sure wouldn'tbe a convenience store, I'd go big time like a bank, lol. Thanks for your response.

I have never worked in a convenience store..but I had a good friend that did-in a bad section of town-and was robbed at gunpoint...she was so traumatized that she left her job. I think it would be a horrible experience-one you will never be able to forget.

It hasnt't exactly happened that way, but once I jumped out of a moving jeepney because of a robbery. I'm quite impulsive like that, so apart from being scared of the robbers, I also fear what I will do in such instances.
What angers and distresses me is that at times, these robbers don't just rob the tangible. They rob lives. This happens not only to those who fight back, I believe. Perhaps one point is to do away with the possibility of having witnesses identify them in the future.
As for those who survive the incident, they will have to live with the trauma induced. The shattered sense of security...

Hi Antique,
I can understand why this would cross your mind after all this time. Just listen to the news. It happens on a daily basis. These are desperate times for a lot of people. I work nights in a convenience store and have for years. I close up the place alone and never ever felt concerned. In the past couple of years, it does cross my mind at times. I do know to give them whatever they want. Most nights when I close up, the cops sit up on the highway where they can see the store. We do have a panic button but when a kid hit it by accident, it's clear that it isn't all that effective. It goes to a call center and then the call center calls the store for a run down of the situation to determine whether or not they needed to notify the police! In my opinion that is a waste of what could be very valuable time. I've made up my mind not to even pick up the phone if it rings and hopefully that would cause them to call the police.

Hi Antique,
I hope you gave those people a piece of your mind and especially the fool that saw it and didn't make a move to even call the police! I am very aware of my surroundings when I close up at night. I check the parking lot for anyone just hanging about etc. The police do pretty well too. They've seen a vehicle down here and asked me to peek out and see if it is anyone I know. Usually its a local person talking on a cell or something. Places all around where I work have been robbed but not us. I think maybe it is because the cops are in and out all the time and it is a very very busy place and tons of security cameras etc. I know they are getting bolder and bolder but so far we've been lucky.

i remember when i was a teen. me and my cousin went to a mall to just roam around since we don't have money and their house is only steps from the mall. while inside the mall, two men approached us, each of them put their arms around our shoulders and told us to be quiet and give them our watches. we were scared and we did what the men told us. we were crying when we reach home and still shaking. though there were no things pointed at us, that was really scary for us, since we were still kids.

This would be a horrifying situation to be in. I did work in a convenience store for a very short time. It was during rush at the high school and some kids came in there and one went back to the coolers while another stayed up front watching me. I realized almost immediately that something wasn't right and the one who went back to the coolers took a 12 pack out and ran out of the store. I went after him leaving the store! Silly me! I stopped about three blocks down the street and headed back. I laugh about it now but when it happened I was very angry at the little jerk.

It was pretty scary but really didn't hit me till later how serios it could have been. I did the same thing & chased a shop lifter down one time, lol. When they caught him the police had been looking for him because he had beatten up his fater. I'm glad he ran instead of coming after me, lol. It ALWAYS MADE ME MAD AT THE JERKS TO. Thanks for responding.

I've never had that experience and cannot imagine how terrifying it must be! Were you harmed in any way, Antiquelady?
I would hope I'd have the good sense to do exactly as told, but I also know a lot of the stores don't keep much money in the drawer and the cashier can't get to the rest. What if you CAN'T give the robber any more than is in the drawer and he won't take no for an answer?
You poor darling. Did you stop working at the convenience store? I hope so. Absolutely do not want to lose a friend.
Hugs and happy Mother's Day.

Thanks for your sweet response. I hope u never face that situation. no, i was not harmed, THANK GOD & no i was not armed. YES, i did stop working there in fact they fired me . WE were not suppose to keep twenties in the register & i had just taken one & hadn't had time to drop it in the safe. I think i would have quit anyway but thought it pretty sorry of them altho it was a relief to know i didn't have to go back.
hugs to u & i'm glad u are my friend.

I'm sorry they fired you, but glad you would have quit anyway. Any company that values a lousy $20 in the drawer over the employee, isn't worth be employed with.

Oh yeah, it's terrifying no doubt. The one thing I don't like though is this idea that we should do exactly what the robbers say.
Yes, I know that's what people are taught. Yes, I know that people think if you do what the bad guy says, that will save you.
I'm sorry, but it won't. In college was lucky and privileged to have an ex-urban district police officer as a professor of social science. During the topic of crime, he brought in a video of criminals caught on tape in the act, and watched helpless victims do exactly as told, and end up shot and killed. Practically executed.
Being a helpless lamb doesn't make you safe. What it does do is make criminals more bold knowing they can get away with anything because you'll do exactly as your told.
This one guy was needed by the criminal to open up a safe. As soon as the safe was open, the criminal shot him from behind with a pistol, and killed him. Once the safe was open, the guy was potential witness, and thus eliminated.
So no, I do not agree with doing whatever the criminal says. I'd rather die trying to fight him, than die pathetically on my knees hoping that by being an obedient terrified lamb, that they won't hurt me.

Hi Antiquelady,
Not at gunpoint, but my niece was walking on her way home at about 9pm, when she noticed her bag was being pulled by something (it turned out it's someone). When she looked at her back there were 3 boys(teenagers) riding on a motorbike, one of them pulled her handbag and pushed her such that she fell to the ground. It was payday and she has just taken some money from the ATM. The boys drove away with her money, cellphone and all her important identification/documents. She said she was stunned she just stared as the kids left her on the ground, unable to move, she couldn't even find her voice to ask for help.

Thankfully this isn't something that I have ever experienced and I'm hoping that I never do experience anything like this at all. It would scare me so much that I know that I would pee my pants right then and there. I'm glad to hear that you made it out of your scary situation safely and I hope that everyone else that finds themselves in a similar situation will be able to safely come out of it as well.

Hi, ANTIQUELADY. I have never had this happen to me before. I don't even want to even experience this. I know that this was very scary. I am glad that you are okay after this bad situation has taken place. I would do as the robbery says. Even though I may not agree to it. This is very scary to go through. Many people are lucky to be alive after this. This is something that I tend to fear. I hope it never happens to me. I have always had an feeling of insecurity when I would work at a gas station. I think this is not a safe place to work late at night, especially if you are a female. I would rather have a couple of males that are tough to work in this store with me.
