My daughter had the goosebumps when I fetched her from work yesterday. The first thing she asked me was Did it occur to you that had Aquino not participated in the presidential race, we would have an ex-prez/ex-con for president? My daughter was but a child during the height of Erap power as Philippine president. Albeit the conviction, Erap still had the pull to garner votes today.

Eraps charisma to the masses is undeniable. I think one of the reason why GMA deported Cesar Mancao is to pin Erap in the Dacer-Corveto murder because GMA is scared that Erap may ran again and win and he may wage a personal vendetta against her.
In my own opinion, and this is my opinion alone and I don't want to offend anybody, the majority of voting public is not still maturing in choosing a candidate. I mean look at the senator who are winning or won, how much more the number one. And second placer in the presidential election, he did not win alright but he still got a significant number of votes.

Yeah I guess you're right. I think he still has a pending case about the Dacer Corbito double murder case for now. Maybe he thought that if he could win the presidency then he might as well evade the case permanently and put Lacson down to cover for his involvement in the case.
You are right about that, I did not vote for the senators that are winning in the senate. I am glad that at least Hontiveros is making it on the 12th spot which is the most dangerous of all spots in there because anyone from the 13th to the 15th spot can still grab it because they are very close to each other.

Yeah I think if Noynoy is out of the picture we could have an Ex President and an Ex convict sitting at our palace in the coming days. But I also am thinking that political play would have changed over time. If there was no Noynoy campaign then the warring camps would have been Erap and Manny and I think the other camps like Gordon, Gibo and other players could have come in the picture to get a piece of the pie. With Noynoy's million plus excess votes right now it would be distributed to other candidates as well and we might still not have Erap as president.
I think Erap lose with the middle class people and the upper class ones since they are usually the ones that cannot be easily be bought. Unlike the poor and the marginalized people they can easily be bought and a few can only stand by their principles.

"People Forget" that's the problem, poor and low thinking people doesn't realize what this person did and he look like a clown when ever there is a debate and wow! it really surprises me that he was second to noynoy. frankly, it should have been a close call between gibo and gordon but this result has strongly disappoint me. well, am glad erap didn't win. or what's he gonna do,
Oh, i know what erap's gonna do on the first day
EXECUTE ORDER NO.1 REMOVE D*CK GORDON...from RED CROSS

That is another factor, but I think still that Erap's charm with the poor being their champion is perhaps still linger in their minds. I heard that even in Tondo, the place where Manny Villar is supposed to have come from, Erap still won int that place. So we can just say that his "pro-poor" image still works for him.
I firmly believed that where he lost was his inability to convince the middle class to support him once again. The same people that supported him during his first time to run for presidency. I think the thinking class went to either Noynoy, Villar, Gordon and Gibo.

hmmm.. i really never thought of him to win this - i think he is bound to lose anyway - maybe even to villar, or to Roxas who might have run instead of Noynoy. Well.. it is weird that people still voted for Erap - but the truth is, those who voted for him then and now are not the people who ousted him. the people who ousted him are students from universities back then - who are not even voters themselves.
There are a lot things that has happened - and the Philippines was no better with Gloria Arroyo Now - who admitted she cheated her way to presidency with the "I'm Sorry" Hello Garci Tape. I think with all these, if he would have won against Noynoy, or would have won against everyone else if noynoy did not run - in all fairness to the old man - this is the true voice of the voters.
I am not a fan of Erap, or noynoy even - actually i opted for Gordon in this race... but well in the spirit of fairness to those who voted Erap in this year's election... well i think they must still see the good in Erap - the person who served them well when he was a Mayor... a Senator... Ohh geesh.. I really don't know!

I'm not a fan of Erap or Noynoy either and I also opted for Gordon in this election. I also agree with you in your text that in the spirit of fairness to those who voted for Erap, they still must see the good in Erap. I myself don't want to judge him just because he was an ex-con. I mean, if we come to think of it, almost (if not all), every single president of our country has done numerous kinds of violent, even unlawful, acts and they seem to get away with it. Erap just had the misfortune of being able to face a trial on his jueteng mishap -- a trial that he won, which what caused the EDSA II. But the rest of the presidents were able to get away with whatever unlawful acts they made. So if we come to think of it, technically yes, Erap is an ex-con. But most of the other presidents (if not all) were also ex-cons, they just didn't go to trial.

Erap to score a second place is a real mystery. But vote buying will be one of the answers.
In leyte, there has been a vote buying amounting from 600 pesos to 1thousand - courtesy of Erap.
Also in my province, Zamboanga del Sur - it has also been mentioned that he had given a large amount in some rural areas.
Even though Gibo did not win, I would be at peace knowing Noynoy has won than Erap.
Anyone but Erap. Or else, another People Power.

i think this is the number one reason for me that since the start of a series of discussions posted even before the start of the campaign period, i always say in my responses and comments, if ask whom i will vote for the presidency in May, i always say "Anybody but not Erap." i also cannot imagine the Philippines run by an ex-convict. sorry to the Erap fans and supporters, but this is just the truth.

I really cant imagine why people still consider him as our president. I mean, we all know what happened before. I cant really imagine living in a country where people who took care of you are former people who once created and stained your country a bad image to other countries. I now believe that the future of this nation is really up to us, but if we will not vote wisely then something like this might possibly happen. How i wish he just made allies with Gibo or Villar so his votes will go to this two people instead.

It's sad to know that many Filipino people i not learn from the past. I personally know someone voted for him and she's a close friend of mine. And mother keeps talking about their neighbors in antipolo who are voting for erap. And I think the Filipino people are not yet ready for "The Change" they chanting... In their mouth they want change but in their mind and heart it means nothing.
I hope our next president can fulfill his promises but personally I doubt him. I still think he doesn't have the capacity yet to govern our country!
I pray the Lord God will bless us even though we did not follow his will.

I really thought Filipinos now are more educated in terms of who to vote but I was very wrong. Many people still voted for Erap. We know what he did. He was convicted of the crimes that was accused of him. It really reflects that people are still ignorant about what Erap did. I rode a taxi today and the taxi driver voted for Erap and didn't know that he was convicted of plunder and just got pardon from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
If Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) endorsed ERAP, there's a big chance that he could have win. But there's a possibility that if he won, he could have do things to make up for his mistake in the past and make a different legacy in the Philippine history. I think people who voted for him believed in that. Filipinos believe in 2nd chances that's why there are many people still voted for him.

have you not thought also that we now have not just an ex-con president but a coward instead...hiding in his parents color and not able to speak during his senatorial seat? Or maybe many have not known who order the firing in case the mediola rallies go beyong the line? Ask ex-mayor Lim who shouted the "fire" order. Was it the lady in yellow just to protect the hacienda of their fathers??????

Nice to hear somebody has opened windows. If you also know what really happens to the Mediola massacre, it sthe Aquino that has to be blamed for it. Sad to say, though they talked about "MASA" but the society was not built for the masses.

I agree with you. And if we come to think of it, almost every single president of our country has done many unlawful acts in his/her time. And they just seem to get away with it. Erap was just unlucky he was able to face the jueteng charges against him, and went to court. But the others weren't. So if we just base it on technicality, yes, Erap is an ex-con, but so are the rest of the other presidents who did unlawful acts, they just weren't able to face the court.

Hello!
The hair in my arms are raising!I detested people who voted Erap. Why on earth they still choose this ex-con, plunderer who had done so much damage to our country's image?I just can't believe it there are more than 8 million Filipinos who had never learn from history. And now Erap refused to concede just like other presidential candidates?and what he expect?won again and plunged the country into deep misery and sufferings?
I think, God really love the Philippines so much that HE allowed the circumstances paved the way of Noynoy's bid in the presidency. Noynoy, I am convinced now, is the only person who could really fight Erap and thank God, circumstances allowed it to happen. Noynoy saves us from another round of international humiliation.

Lol, Erap still have so many supporters despite the fact that he was impeached before and even imprisoned. I think most of his supporters are those that were depending on Jueteng for a living, the others might be those that were help by his programs while he was in the seat before EDSA 2. Well, let's hope that whoever might get in the presidential seat, the next president should think of ways to improve the FIlipino ways of living...

coincidence i supposed
but i think Mar Roxas could have still pull it off if only he didn't give way to Noynoy. frankly, in the LP i strongly prefer Mar Roxas since not only he had experience but pass laws as well. look at situation now, it's grim that mar might loose to a Makati Mayor like binay but i guess we have to wait for the results, but you know at least binay is good since he had experience dealing with business men in ayala.
