How fast do you go?

On a treadmill that is... how fast do you go and how long? When I started running on a treadmill I was jogging at 4.5 for half an hour.. and eventually worked up to an hour. I will now run an hour a few days a week, and now it's usually set at 5.5. (4.5 is now speed walking for me) Yesterday I decided to do some intervals. I ran at 5.5 for 4 minutes, then 6.5 for 4 minutes.. and continued to do that for the full hour. I figured I could probably run the 6.5 for a full hour because it wasn't too difficult... so tomorrow I think I'll try that.. or at least 6. Part of me has been afraid to turn up the speed, in case I can't do it, and of course there's always that fear that I'll fall off, lol! I certainly want a speed I can maintain for a full hour, which is why I'm not pushing it until the last few minutes.

It is very uncommon for a runner to love doing so on a treadmill in my experience. That said, I run on my treadmill rather than outside this year. I'm considered a penguin which is a very slow runner. I run at 5.3 most of the time. I usually get bored by 45 minutes though and am trying to work myself up to over an hr. I am running a 10K race in just about a month and need to get myself geared up to an over an hr long run. As for endurance, I know I CAN do it, I just get bored lol. And don't be afraid to turn up the speed. Slowing down is just a button press away so you won't fall off. And interval training is FANTASTIC for muscle confusion and burning more calories and building your endurance. I run more for distance than time. Day before yesterday I did 3.3 miles. Today I must do at least 3.6

I get bored too, but it's mind over matter. I decided awhile ago that my goal was to run for an hour, so I did it.. now I just work on upping the speed and inclines.. I also have to work on not holding the handlebars of the treadmill.. which I tend to do once I start losing steam. I've found that reading helps. I'll get books from the library, or sometimes some magazines to browse. After awhile it gets tiring to read while trying to run, but by then I've already done half an hour to 45 mins.. so I can finish the last 15-30 minutes without much trouble.

I was doing 5 at one point, but that was walking, not running. I don't know how much I'm going to be able to get back into running because of my arthritis...

You walk at 5mph? You must be pretty tall! I have no choice but to begin jogging at that speed. I can walk at 4.5 but 5 is pushing it.

Run? On the treadmill? Ha Ha that's funny. Well, i have been working at going faster on the treadmill. I'm not a huge fan of the treadmill though. Right now I walk at like 3. I just started trying to jog/run. I'm easing myself into it slowly. I only run for like a minute at 4, then I slow back down and walk. But that's pretty good because 3 months ago I was getting short of breath just walking on the thing for a mile.

Set a goal for yourself, like to run a mile.. even if it's only at a 4. You'll be amazed at how you'll feel once you've accomplished that, and that will make you want to push yourself to see how much farther you can go.. and how much faster!

I don't think I have ever RUN on a treadmill in my life. The last time I remember even being on a treadmill was about 6 years ago and I walked at I think 2 MPH then. I never really managed to go to the Y and work out like I had planned on doing when I had a Y membership back then.

You know, if it wasn't for my Y, I never would have gotten as far as I have, and probably would have quit ages ago. There are so many motivating people there, plus having the free child watch is like a life saver. On days when I don't feel like getting up and going I just think about how much the boys love and need to go to the Child Watch (I view it as like a preschool prep for them) and so I get my butt up and go.

In all honesty when I do go to the gym I don't really like the treadmill - I much prefer the rowing machine!! But, good on you for being able to do so well!

The speed of the treadmill depends of your goals. I personnally wanted to lose fat so I had to run for at least 45 minutes to have some great results (and I did). So to run for a longer period of time with intensity, I started like this: 1st minmute: walking and every minute until 4, I cranked up the speed by one. After 4, I ran 2 minutes on the same speed until I reached 6.5 then, I ran 5 minutes, and every 7.5 minutes I would crank the speed by one until I reached 7.5 to 8 and I kept it there until time was up and did the exact same process in reverse and much faster (still with a 5-10 minutes walk after).

I've actually never been able to run. Of course, I don't have a treadmill and I don't have space for one, so that is the main thing that is holding me back. I think that I would be able to train to run on a treadmill, but I know that I can't run on the street because I'm afraid that I will hurt my ankle (I shattered it through the growth plate when I was a child and I've been told that if I ever break it again I'll never be able to walk again). That said, I'm going with my sister and my mother this afternoon to try out their gym and I'm planning on getting on the treadmill. I have no clue what speed I'll be able to start at, but I need to start somewhere and if I enjoy their gym then I will be getting a membership.
