If you found money on the sidewalk, what would you do?

Hi everyone:
This question came to my mine, when I had found out that my grand daughter had found money on the school bus. She knew it wasn't hers, so when she got to school, she turned the money in, and she pretty much didn't think about it after than. Well, no one had come forward to claim it, so she got to keep it, and treated her mom to ice cream. So many tines, we as adults, don't think about doing what is right, as if wse need the money, we are sure going to take it and not think anything of it, unless we do have honesty, and trun it it in. It would be hard for me to not want to keep it either, but being a Christian, I know that it would be wrong to keep something that isn't mine. I am so proud of my grand daughter, as she certainly could have kept it, but my son and daughter in law have taught her and her brother what is right and wrong. I am sure they will both go far in this world, and I couldn't be more proud than I am of both of them right now. So, share your thoughts on this as it would be interesting what others would do in this situation. Happy mylotting to all.

I would have to hand it into the police station if i found money. I would feel guilty keeping it in case it belonged to a senior citizen or someone who had very little to live on.

You are so right, as I wouldn't feel good about keeping something that isn't mine either. If I earn it then I would feel okay, but if I just found it, then no, I wouldn't feel okay about keeping it, knowing full well, it wasn't mine in the first place. I have never found money yet, and in a way I hope I don't but if I do, then I will know what to do. Thank you for taking the time to respond, and happy mylotting.

I will tend to pick up the money if it's more than a £1 and especially if it's a note and has clearly been left by someone. I don't think it's at all wrong to do that as it is not stealing because you haven't taken it off someone and you of course don't know who's money it really is and anyone could claim it was theirs and you would have no proof if wasn't.

I do agree with you that you anyoine can claim it and how are you to know if the person claiming it really lost it? There are a lot of dishonest people out there that is for sure, and the economy being what it is, all kinds of people would coume out of the woodwork claiming it is theirs. You are right, that there would be no proof that it would or wouldn't be either. You are right it wouldn't be stealing per se, but I just wouldn't feel right keeping money that I never earned, and if they lost it by accident, then they probably would be looking for it, so I would want to make sure it got back to the righ person. Thank you for responding, and happy mylotting.

I have done it on a few ocassions and sometimes I have thought about whether it is actually mine as I have found it near to where I was sitting in a Pub or restaurant. I can understand why some people may feel difficult about picking up the money.

I would do the same thing, however in this economy, it would be easy to just not trun it in and kkep it, but then that wouldn't be honest either. I was brought up not to take what didn't belong to me,and that has stuck with me all my life, and I am 62. I would turn it in, then maybe in some small way, that no one would cliam it. Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion and respond, and happy mylotting.

You should be proud of her, obviously she has great teachers, (mom and/or- grandma I suppose?) who have taught her right from wrong. She did the right thing in a world where most think she should have kept it in the first place..

Yes, I am very proud of her, and I told her so. I am sure it was difficult for her to do what she did, but beings that she was brought up to know wright from worng, she didn't even think twice about it. I am sure she never expected to get it though and spend it, as she really expected someone to claim it. I think God was watching out for her, and he blessed her. Thank you for responding and have a very good day.

My son and daughter in law are very good parents, as the both children have been taught right from wrong, and that is a very good thing, as they are able to take that with them throughout their lives. I am very proud of my grand daughter for knowing what to do, and not keeping the money. I can imagine, it really wasn't all that easy, but since she has been taught properly, then she knew exactly what to do. She ended up with the money anyway, so doing what is right will always pay off. Thank you for responding and happy mylotting.

I had a hard time making this star reaching 8/10 but I don't really care now! I will be upfront as always.
If I found a wallet I would definitely give it to the owner.
If I found money on the side walk, without knowing whose that is, and was less than 100 Euros I would keep it.
If I found 100 to 500 Euros though (around $120-$600) I would turn the money in the police giving information on where I found them.

I think that it would be hard to return any amount of money, but in all honesty, that is what I would do, as I am a very honest person, and if it would ever happen to me, I would certainly hope that if I lost money, that someone would return mine to me. You never know though, as there are good and bad people in the world, I hope I never do lose money, and the only way that would happen would be if my purse was stolen, but then the crook would have a hard time getting it too. I have never been lucky enough to find anything but coins, and that isn't worth bothering with, as usually it is just a few pennies if that. Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion and post a response, and happy mylotting.

Oh the problem with Euros is that we have 100,200 and 500 bank-notes so it's kind of easy to loose them if you have em
Once though I remember that a woman was about to enter the church, and then $2 felt off her pocket! I run into the church screaming "Mrs! Your money your money!" I got an angry look from the priest

that really depends... the right thing to do of course is to turn the money into authority if the amount is large... but if the amount is very small, i just leave it and let other people take it if they want to... i don't want to take things that doesn't belong to me as it can be considered as stealing and dishonesty... i've been taught by my parents to be an honest person since i was a child... take care and have a nice day...

I was brought up the same way, as I don't like taking things that don't belong to me either. I guess you are right though, it would depend on the amount that has been lost. Just a small amount wouldn't be worth bothering with, however, it might mean a great deal to the person that lost it. I think I would turn in any amount excluding change, as it wouldn't be all that much anyway. I would hope that the owner would be found, but if not, then hey, I would just gain a little extra, and sometimes if the owner is fourn, then once they get their money back, then they will give out a reward, so it is worth it to give it back in that sistuation. Thank you for responding and happy mylotting.

Your granddaughter is a great person. I've never thought of turning in lost money. If I found a wallet or something with ID I would turn it in but I always thought that people could steal the lost money if I turn it in to the police. Who knows if the person going to claim that money is actually the person who lost it? That's just me being paranoid and selfish. I'm glad the upcoming generation has hope.

I feel the same way, that it is hard to know if and when I would have find money, that I would turn it in, and the right person would claim it. There are so many dishonest people out there, and you never know. I really don't want to find any, unless it is God's providence that I do find some. I just wouldn't feel right keeping money that I never worked for or earned. That is just me, and the way I feel. I am happy that my grand daughter did what she did too, as I am sure it was hard for her, but ended up with it anyway, so by her doing right, she was blessed in it all. I am so proud of her. Thank you for responding and have a very good day.

By turning in money that you have found, might be a good thing, as you just might get a reward for doing so. It has happened in other cases, so you never know. I wouldn't turn money in for a reward, as I just want to feel better about doing the right thing. I just wouldn't want to keep money that I never worked for and earned, It just wouldn't seem right, and it would bother me. If I ever did find money and would turn it in, and get a reward, then that is great too, as I would feel then that I had done the right thing. Thank you for responding, and happy mylotting.

You probably taught him well too, that is why he and his wife were able to pass it on to their daughter. :-) I am not sucking up to you, I swear! I find this particular behavior very interesting and so I have made some unscientific observations over the years. My unofficial and unscientific conclusion is that children who have honest parents will tend to be honest too, at a very young age. But children who have thieves for parents will, sadly, mimic their parents. I live in a third world country and I taught catechism in depressed areas. Even there, you can tell the "profession" of the parents by observing their children, if you know what I mean. One time, a partner of mine was even pickpocketed by the children while he was teaching. The children of non-robbers were quick to tell off the one who took the wallet. But the chilren of robbers defended the one who robbed my partner! It was then that we first learned to never bring anything valuable with you there.
I have found money several times too (my brother says this is because I walk with my head down), literally on the sidewalk and sometimes left forgotten by an owner in the room or mall. If I am in an area where I know someone will look for it, then either I bring it to the customer service/lost and found area (if there is one) or I wait until someone comes back (but only for an hour or two especially if its on the road). But if its in a highway, and the amount is so negligible (pennies or cents), then I pick it up and use it as a good luck coin. I just leave it in my wallet until I either I see a possible owner (haven't experienced this though) or I see a beggar and I use the money I picked-up to buy food for the beggar (street food is very cheap here). So here's my point: my parents taught me not to take money/property that is not mine. They set an example to us like returning to the store in case of over-change (is this a word? I hope you understand what I mean). Because of this, I have always done my best to return money/property that I have found. In contrast, I talked to the kid who stole my partner's wallet and he told me matter-of-factly that it was what his father taught him.

That is sad that the boy that took your parnter's wallet, probably had no regrets since he was taught that way, and that is the worst part of it all. He just didn't know anything else, and his dad would really be put on the hot seat for even instilling bac values to his child. I don't think the father really cares how ti impacts other people as if he wants something, he will just get is child to steal it for him. What a very sad state of affairs, that is for sure. I have never ever found money either, unless it was just a penny here or a penny there, but never nay bills. It really wouldn't bother me if I never did find any either, as I wouldn't have to bother with trying to figure out who it belongs to. Thank you for respoding, and have a very good day.

I wish I could be the honest person. Think about it! I find the money on the sidewalk and I don't know who belong to the money. I want to be honest what should I do? Just leave it and let somebody else take it? If I have to take it and bring it back to the owner, where do I find the owner? Bring it to police? Will they find the owner? How if the owner never report his loss to the police? The police will never find the owner. Will the police to be honest?
Let me tell you what will I do if I find money on the side walk. If the money is in the wallet and I find an ID card in the wallet, I will try contact the person who belonging the wallet. If I don't find any information about the owner about the money, I will take it for me.
I ever experienced similar situation. I found a ring included with the certificate and information about the owner in the ATM. I contact her by phone and ask her to take it at my home. Several times, I found money, not too much, I took it and save it to my pocket. Just be realistic. It's very hard to find honest person today.

You are so right, that there aren't honest people out there. It is hard to find them that is for sure. I would say though that if the money hasn't been reported missing, then in that situation, I feel it would be okay to do what you want with it, but if it has been reported, then it would be anyone's responsibility to see to it that the person gets it back. Now I would say, that if it is a small amount they probably won't report it as it wouldn't be worth it, but it is a lot of money, then they most certainly would want it back, I am assuming. I have never been in any situation where I had found money or rings or anything like that. In a way, I hope I don't either, as I don't want all the hassle to try to figure out who it belongs to, and I certainly wouldn't want it to get in the wrong hands. Thank you for responding, and happy mylotting.

if i see the money accidentally dropped then i'd run after the person and give it back to him/her. but if its just lying there on the street... heheheh i'd get it. but if it's left in a school bus or a common toilet, then i'd go to the admin and surrender it to the lost and found section. i'd teach my kids to do that too.

That is good that you have taught your kids well. I did instill that in my kids too, and that is why my grand daughter turned the money in, instead of keeping it, as she knew it wasn't hers, but I don't think she ever expected to really have it, as I am sure she expected someone to claim it. I am so proud of her for doing the right thing. When you see money just lying there loose, it is difficult to know who lost it, but by turning it in, you could be blessed in the end as you could get a reward for doing so, which would also be a good thing. Thank you for responding and have a very good day.

Well, you handled it differently than most other people would have. You are lucky that no one saw you pick it up and put it in your pocket, but then maybe they thought it was yours. I think I would have either given it to the buss driver or taken it to school and given it to the principal. You never know, but that you might have ended up with it anyway. I, myself just don't feel right pocketing money that I didn't earn, as it wouldn't be mine, and it would set on my conscience, but that that is just me, as everyone is different. Hello rosekiss in mine case it differently handled, means to say i there is enough crowd than i won't even pick it up, but if less crowd than would pick it up and give it in any donation box of Temple, or any organisation.Yeah its an good deed to follow, as who knows the owner. And in todays world anybody would lie to get even a few bucks, so its best to collect such money and spend it in donations, either in gods house or to an charity organisation.Anyways keep it up with your god deeds, Happy mylotting.

Yes donating to a charitable organization is good, as it would multiply and help others, and that is what it is all about. I like helping others too, so I give to my church and they use it for what it needs to be used for, and I am glad to do it. If I ever did find money, I would certainly try to see who it belonged to if at all possible and if no one claims it, then it would just be that much more I can give to the church. Thanks for responding, and have a very good day.

I will have to agree with you there, as if it weren't for bad luck, I would have no luck at all. I probably would have to pinch myself too, and wonder if ti were really real, and why it is there. I probably will never find money like that, and in a way, I hope I don't, as I don't want to do the wrong thing and keep ti instead of trying to figure out who it belongs to. If i found some money by the side walk i would try to search for that person as he must be really worried for his money---i would handover to him if i found one else i would offer it to the beggars in the nearby temple.I would never built dreams on others money so i'm sure it goes into the hands of needy ones than into my pocket.great day.

You are so right, that giving it to the ones who can benefit is the right thing to do. There are a lot of crooks out there, so we would just hope that we are giving it to someone who really needs it. that is why I think giving it to charitable organizations is best, as it will go to those that really need it, and we will be blessed by doing so. You are right, that if it is a big amount then, the person who lost it would certainly want it back, but if it is a small amount, they might not even care. It is difficult to find the owner when it is loose money, and they may have dropped it without knowing it, and if they have a lot of money already, they are probably not missing it at all. However, if it was all they had, then I am sure they would want it back. You did the right thing though, waiting to see if someone would claim it. Then if someone does claim it, you never know if they are the one who dropped it in the first place. In that situation, you just have to do what you think is right, and you will be blessed anyway. Thank you for responding and have a very good day.
