Does anyone really need instructions on how to do a blog?

Once we can do something and it becomes second nature to us, it is difficult to envisage anyone not being able to do what we find so easy. Doing my first Wordpress installation was scary. Changing themes even more so. I can set up a new blog with confidence now, though setting all the options, plug ins and finding a theme can take two days still. I would be interested to find out if there are any MyLotters who are really struggling with setting up their first blog. I may even be able to help.

When I first started blogging I found it a bit difficult as I have to admit that it took me some three days to understand it fully though, after that it was and it is fun, I have two blogs and one at wordpress and now I am creating a web site for the rest.

You and I both. There is an awful lot to learn when you first encounter WP. It took me about three hours to make all the settings changes and to be sure I had done everything. Installing WP on a domain is a challenge for the uninitiated and I think that is the main reason why there are so many blogspot and blogger blogs.

Hi Philtrate,
I think that blogging is one of those neverending subjects. You start off by trying think of something to blog about, then you have to find a platform, then you think about hosting your own blog, and it just goes on and on.
I've just started my own blog and I'm enjoying the learning experience. My biggest problem is confidence. I read the techie stuff, work out what I think I have to do and then worry about it for a while. I am making headway though.
It's easy to start a blog. The problem is knowing how to blog well.

Thanks for those thoughts. Glad you are moving along the learning curve. We are all on that curve. As to what to blog about, I intend to earn my living from blogs, so it has to be a profitable niche

I have several blogs on blogspot and one on word press. The word press one isn't finished and I think it's been 6 or 8 months since I set it up, or tried to. Word Press is confusing to me although many people who blog for a living recommend it because it supposedly has so many more features than blogspot. I'm used to the easy templates and "gadgets" of blogspot.

I've never tried Blogspot. always Wordpress. I suppose it's what you are used to. There are an awful lt of options inWP, especially once you start using plugins. I have spent past 2 days trying to configure one blog after I installed 71 plugins. Should be good, but it all takes time

i think all of the beginner need tutorial to start blogging. but its better if u have friend to ask about blogging. my friend ask me how to blogging at blogspot. for me its easier and faster to learn something from someone than learn from book.

I agree a friend is best, but not everyone who wants a blog has a knowlegeable friend.

for my two cents, i think lots and lots of people just get scared. Whatever part pre-fabricated (or not fabricated at all) form of web site you use you need to get inside the designers logic to be able to manipulate it to your own vision. it's the same with many things in life. we all knew kids that just couldn't get a certain teachers style of teaching, it's the same thing. but here you are made to feel stupid if you can't figure it out and made to read patronising how-to guides that skip from "switch on the computer" to the ornate technical language.
However. i think the challange and the worth of the site comes from constantly developing your site. as you learn more the site improves not only in it's weight of content but also in it's appearance, smooth running and appropriatness to the task. now people could tell you how to do that but learning for yourself would ultimatly serve you better and the little bits you get stuck on are what message boards are for!

I suspect it isn't for everyone. Can be overwhelming when you first log in, change theme or install plug ins.
