I just watched on TV where there are still many places in the Philippines where they drink milk freshly milked from a cow. I've had fresh milks before but not the fresh ones from the cow, it was already processed and pasteurized and bottled. In your place, do you still have these milk in your tables? Is it safe to drink these even if it's fresh from the cow?

yes it is available in our market. it is not advisable to drink that fresh from the cow so they are pasteurized. those who sell fresh milk in our market also sell 'kesong puti' which are home made too.

Hello basqui, when I was a kid I remember we used to have fresh cow's milk in my grandmother's table and I really love it. But I think the milk was actually sterilized from the bottle itself. I love it so much when my grandmother used to warm the milk served in a glass, it taste so good. I still love drinking fresh milk to these days but now it's fresh from the bottles/carton's itself, processed, pasteurized.

I'm glad we did when we're a kid, were able to taste fresh cow's milk. I wish we still have it here in our place. I know that most people were into goats fresh milk nowadays here, haven't tried it though, which I will when I can.

Might be safe, might not, could be bacteria... That's why pasteurization was invented!

They are using machine to milk cows in that particular place I've mentioned. Pasteurization really kills bacterias eh? that's good then, have you had fresh milk before dawn?

That is why it's called fresh milk because it comes straight from the cow. Yes, people drink such milk here and it is true to its word. Years ago, people drank their milk straight from the cow and they didn't die because of that. I guess bacteria or germs only became popular now. LOL

Yeah, the changing world have made living habitats for bacterias and germs even in living cells of animals and humans so we better beware of what we take in our body as food.

I have heard of people drinking milk straight from the cow in rural areas of my country. My sister once stayed with a family who lived on a farm. And they brought in fresh milk from a cow they had in their pasture. The family drank it, so my sister not wanting to be rude, also drank it. She did not like the taste, but she didn't get sick either. But for the most part, people around here don't do that.

Oh, we rarely have some now because of the change in climate too. The climate is not good for cattle raising anymore.

I don't drink fresh cow's milk often, but there's a local dairy farm outside the city where we do buy them cooled and in chocolate flavor. It's not pasteurized so it's best to consume it before the day is over. It's great really, but can't drink much of it because our family is lactose intolerant hehehe.. well, slightly.

Which is why we don't consume too much. But when it's really too much and it attacks, nothing a glass of calamansi juice can't do.
@basqui (3888)

Oh, the acid from the calamansi helps in lowering the intolerance of the tummy huh?

I have never drank milk that came straight from the cow even tho my grandad was a dairy farmer i don't think we ever drank the milk. I doubt if anybody does now. Just about all the dairy farmers have gone out of buisness around here anyway.

I know that there are people that still drink milk that is freshly milked from the cow, but I have never had that opportunity and I honestly don't know that I would like it if I had that opportunity. As far as whether or not it is safe to drink, I honestly don't know, I think that it would depend on the situation, in may or may not be safe to drink. I think that there is always some degree of contamination involved when milking a cow and that is the reason that milk is typically pastuerized.
@basqui (3888)

Yes, I agree that some farmers are not always clean on their milking process so the milk really needs pasteurization.

I haven't tried fresh milk directly from the cows, I was born and raised in the city, I only see those in the movies. What I have tried was the white cheese wrapped in banana leaves, once a week there was a man from Batangas vending white cheese in our neighborhood. It's a delicious spread for our local bread called "pandesal", it's really good with brewed coffee in the morning.

I think it's healthy. It will no longer be healthy if the milk is contaminated by bacteria or some germs.

I feel it might be better for all of us to go back to nature the way it was intended. With all the additives and preservatives that they add to our foods who knows what they do in our bodies. I can not drink store bought milk but fresh milk thats just been pasturized is ever so good.Somehow when they homaginize the milk and add all the crap it makes me ill. It isn't lactose intolerance because I can drink fresh cows milk or pasturized milk with no effect. If we put preservatives in our food then eat the food where do the preservatives go?
@basqui (3888)
• Philippines
22 May 10
Oh, I have no idea, but it is absorbed by the body too I think. There are preservatives added that prevents the milk from spoiling so that it will be freshly bought but it has effects on the body as what happened to you.

Hi basqui, earlier we have a couple of farm owners here providing fresh cow milk for the inhabitants. They would send the bottle of milk to us either in the morning or early evening putting beside our doorway. We could put a daily order or every other day order by paying monthly. These farm owners are no longer living in our place nowadays, and we could enjoy drinking fresh boiled milk in one of the street stalls near the market here. During my kid's childhood I collected the milk from our doorway every morning. I usually boiled the milk and then served it on the dinner table for breakfast. I boiled it before my family member taking as I thought it's safe as it's free from the harmful bacteria after boiling. It's really tasty to take if plain or with a bit of sugar added to it. I liked to take this nutritive milk stirred with hot Milo or black tea Happy posting

when i was young and i was still single, living with my parents, there were fresh milk, as in fresh cow's milk or carabao milk, in almost everyday. but when i moved here in the south, i see none so if we really want milk, it's either in powder form or pasteurized, in carton packaging from the grocery store.

I’ve never had milk that has just been milked from a cow. My husband grew up on a farm and he and his family lived on it. They used to milk the cow and hold the milk in big vats and use it straight from there no pasteurization or anything! I would be inclined to think that it is not the safest way to drink milk because of the bacteria and the chance of getting sick but I may be wrong! I wouldn’t give it to my child like that! I would love to have a taste though...I love milk from the bottle, no problems there...

I have drank fresh milk from a cow and also from the goat! yeah, a goat! As long as you strain it after you milk the animal and then refrigerate it it is safe. It's also very good and much better than the human-touched milk changed by pasteurization and processing!

Oh, I've heard goat's milk is good too. There are goat raisers here but rarely sell their goat's milk.

My son's friend lives on a dairy farm and all their milk is sold to the Milk Marketing board (or whatever the modern name for it is!!) it is they who pasteurise the milk, so they are not allowed to sell their milk to anyone themselves, they can drink it and we have drunk it when still warm - delicious!!

Oh, they must have some groups that really see to it that their milks are healthy to drink. That's good for the consumers so that they won't get sick from drinking the milk sold to them.
