It would be easier to answer the question if I knew whyyou thought fiction was useless. Useless in what way? For me, fiction is enjoyable, exciting, heartbreaking, hilarious, terrifying and various other things depending on the type of story. I get lost in fiction and have a good time with it. Is that useful? I don't know. I don't go around measuring the usefulness of an activity that's always given me enormous pleasure. I do know that, useful or not, life would be very dry, gray, and boring without fiction. So, although I don't think something has to be useful to be worth doing, I'll say that yes, it is useful. Useful in it provides me with joy -which is a very important thing to have and life is colorless and grim without it. By the way, I'm not saying everyone needs to agree about books or fiction. Not everyone does get pleasure out of that. But, whatever activity gives someone pleasure or happiness (barring ones that are harmful) why does it matter if it's so called "useful"? Plenty of things are useful. What's wrong with something that's just good plain fun? Why do people do things that aren't useful? I would assume the first answer that should come to mind is because they enjoy it.

People read fiction for subtext, character development, inventive storylines, and to escape the hustle and bustle of day to day living among other things. These are the same reason people get into creative writing, and everything else that falls under the umbrella of art(drawing, painting, music, etc.) To me, saying fiction is useless is like saying having an imagination is useless. you can spark ideas and jump start huge projects with a little imagination. You can become inspired by a book of fiction in the same way.

I had a period in my life where I read fiction most of the time, then I had a period where I only read non-fiction and now I read a combination of both things. In the period where I read non-fiction all the time I focused on gaining knowledge and learning new things and I didn't think that I learned much from fiction, but now I have a different opinion. I learn a lot of fiction. I am a writer myself and I get inspiration when I see the way that other people write, I notice how they build up the story and things like that. Non-fiction is a great way to learn new words and I like to look up the words that I don't know when I read in other languages than my own, and it is a also a way to relax.

Fiction isn't a waste. If you feel it is then you should also not ever watch a movie because they are about the same thing. Now granted I read mostly non-fiction but I enjoy a good novel now and then. It provides more than an engaging movie.

I love fiction books. They help me unwind and also relax from the realities of life. I read mostly fiction, apart from newspaper. May be you should try reading them. And fiction are usually based on real lives too. Okay I admit there are some which are pure fiction, just out of imagination....even those are great and I think they are still loosely based on real lives. I learnt a lot about other cultures through fiction.

I read FICTION not FRICTION!! And 2 books a week is hardly huge ! I have read four FICTION books over the last two days!! I read them because I enjoy them, they broaden my mind, they can be informative, reading widely will help you enhance your vocabulary, if you are stressed, moody, miserable or lonely they can relax you, they can be obtained free of charge..... I could go on and on. But mainly because I love to read them, to get lost in different worlds, work out 'whodunnit', go back centuries, go forward into space - with a good novel everything is possible. That's why I read fiction!!

First of all... you can't read friction. It's a property of surfaces, and a big part of physics... but you can't read it! lol Sorry, I know what you meant. I love FICTION and I read fiction because it's entertaining. I like getting caught up in stories and following the lives of heroes on epic quests to save the world! Or whatever their epic quest is for. It takes me on an emotional ride, and engages my imagination. The world needs stories, and not just true stories. The world needs stories to help illustrate points, help us to realize what we need in life, and to help us reach higher and become more. It's not useless at all. I've learned more from fiction than I ever learned in school.

Fiction books are not totally useless. For one, they are a way for people to relax. Do you believe that movies and television that aren't nonfiction are useless? Above anything else, Fiction books still help reading comprehension just the same as any other book would because the person reading it is still practicing their reading skills. Just because you may not like fiction books does not make them useless in any way.

I can understand enjoying reading non-fiction, but for me that's not so much entertaining as it is a learning experience. I read fiction because I see it as entertainment just like a movie would be. You are still able to learn things from fiction, I've lost count of the amount of times I've known a fact which I've picked up in a fiction book. It's all about escapism and experiencing something different, even if it is all made up.
