I know a person that wants to lose weight and they tend to eat meals aswell as have snacks between meals.I know there are alot of people out there that can eat all the time aswell as eat all the things that are supposed to make you put on loads of weight, but they are the people that never get big from all the eating they do.Now this person is going to be walking the dog aswell as drinking water rather than tea, but i know they will always snack inbetween meals as that is something they have always done and i think it is more of a habit.

We Filipinos eat five times a day. We love to eat. What you call coffee break is more of snack time for us. A sandwich or pasta is considered as snacks. We only consider it a meal if there is rice and viand. For a third world country, we certainly love to eat all day.

hi advocate but in the Philippines don't you have a lot of tropical fruits and maybe veggies we do not have in the US.? so even as third
world you can have some food easily available. I have a filipino tablemate here and she also loves to eat too, and talks about bananas and mangoes. oh I wish mangoes were cheaper in our US stores as I love them so.she also loves her rice. I like rice but as a Diabetic I can not eat much rice as it shoots up my blood sugar too much.

That's right, we do have a lot of tropical fruits and vegetables and they are really cheap here. I love mangoes too! I am lucky because I live within walking distance of a public market so I get fruits and vegetables all the time. But its not a convenient snack for employees who are on the clock. Plus we don't consider them as snacks, more of dessert really. Foods considered as snacks here are relatively cheap, especially those within business areas (not in restaurants though). We can buy a snack-size spaghetti (pasta to you) for less than a dollar. We have this interesting cultural thing that we do that makes foreigners smile. When we are eating something we always say to people who are not eating "Kain" (meaning eat) which is our way of sharing to others, even if we do not know the person or he is just passing by. Most foreigners wonder if we really mean to share to everyone we see considering we only have a plate of food in front of us. :-)

I agree, it's funny how we offer our food to everyone. You're expected to decline, but if you don't we'd still gladly share it. It's kinda like a courtesy call here.
I love fruits too. Sometimes I fret over how we can't grow some plants here because of our tropical weather, but then I remember how abundant we are with my favorite fruits like mangoes, bananas, buko (coconut) and langka (jackfruit), santol and kamias. Those fruits, you could actually ask your neighbor for some and they'd gladly give you, free of charge.
We have an apple-mango tree in our backyard and we make it a point to give a few to our neighbors and relatives. YUM

Hey jugs! Some diets allow and want you to "snack" between meals!
If they are "healthy" snacks like fruits, veggies or even those
pre-packaged "100 calorie" snacks of chips or cookies or health
bars! Eating more small meals a day is supposed to help you lose
weight rather than eating larger meals! I honestly couldn't tell
you from personal experience because I have never been able to
diet in my life! When I lose weight is because of stress and
when I gain weight it is because of stress! So you see my problem!

jugjugs some people do eat six meals a day and are dieting but they do not eat a lot at any one meal. A lot of doctors now suggest six or five meals a day so that you are never hungry yet you stay within a certain calorie limit but people who just eat a anything all day that's a different story as they will not lose weight if they have not scaled back the amount of food they eat. I eat three meals a day and a light snack at bedtime only because lately have been having a problem with low blood sugar in the middle of the night. I am overweight and found out yesterday I had gained five pounds instead of losing. Too many carbs and too little exercise, and I have the problem that its hard for me to walk very far as have a bad foot with a brace. i need new orthopedic shoes ,one thousand dollars and my copay two hundred which I just do not have.
I have no way of doing that small meals six times a day here as you need to have your own kitchen and do your own cooking, but I can cut out and cut back.

I think like you are saying that you can have 6 meals a day aswell as lose weight as long as they are not full meals and that they are the right things that you are eating.I have trouble trying to keep the weight off and i am the type of person that as i am not able to do any exercise i tend to cut certain things out every now and again like crisps as they can make you pile on the weight aswell as never eat before i go to bed as then you are not getting rid of it as it is sitting on your stomach.

Making such a small change like drinking more water and taking more walks, is not going to show enough results.. and when your friend doesn't see results they're going to give up and say it's not worth it. Losing weight is not easy, it is something you have to work really hard for.. just like everything else in life that's worth having.
I am not a doctor or nutritionalist so I cannot say if it's good or bad to snack between meals... some say it's good, others say it's bad..I don't know. Personally I try to avoid snacks and I get my daily calories in my meals, but if I get hungry I will not deprive myself.. because getting too hungry leads me to make bad choices.
What I do know is that if your friend decides to snack, it's best to go for healthy options instead of junk food. Healthy eating would not hinder weight loss.

I think that alot of people tend to give up too quick when they do not see instant results and do not try again to give it a good go at losing the weight.I think that if they eat smaller meals then that would help aswell as instead of having something to eat before they go to bed then they should just go to bed as that way they will not need the food.

if she eats 3 good size meals a day then there is no reason for her to snack, coz the 3 meals will be giving her the calories, fat etc that she needs, anything extra she does'nt need, the most calories she's meant to have is 2000 per day,and about 45g of fat a day,if she sticks to that as well as walking the dog she'll lose weight,,also she needs to drink lots of water, preferably 1 glass about 15 minutes before every meal

There are alot of people out there that can not even master 3 meals like myself and i stay the same size, well sort of.Where as i know a person that do not drive so they tend to do alot of walking and they are forever trying to keep the weight off and yet i never really see them eat anything.I find that if people were to eat smaller meals and do not think i will have a bag of crisps that also helps.

Nah, you're not abnormal. That happens to me too! It could be either because you have a high metabolism or you're snacking on healthy foods like vegetables, nuts or fruit.

I do yes.
I wouldn't say I do all the time, I generally do it when I'm still wanting to eat but choose to have something lite instead of making some big I may end up leaving. I don't see any harm in having snacks, as it's something I personally enjoy. I know some people feel you should be eating food for the right reason but why we can't just enjoy to do I don't know. I've never had a problem with eating too much or putting weight on, I'm very lucky.

When I get the munchies (I am one of the unfortunates, moment on the lips, lifetime on the hips) I fire up the popcorn air popper. If you don't put salt and butter on it, popcorn is very healthy and low in calories. That is because it is basically air and fiber. A quarter cup of corn kernels can fill a gallon bowl with puffy munchies.

Hi jugsjugs!
Yes, I do have snacks between meals. But not regularly. There are times when I simply do not have the luxury of time to do so. There are also times when I do not have the appetite for snacks. Most of the time when I eat my snacks between meals, I make sure that it is light enough to get me through the next meal. Light and nutritious of course.

same thing here. i do have more meals than snacks. considering that i do a lot of workouts, and i do constantly feel that my stomach is empty. perhaps because of my fast metabolism. but sometimes, my meal is under control. say like, for days that i am off to work (usually 2-3days), i just eat snacks like fruits and the like and less meal. and hey stealty, if you really serious about losing weight without compromising your meal, try to eat oat meals or muesli bars instead of a full meal. and don't eat any food rich in carbo 4-5 hours before you sleep. say, if you sleep at 10pm, try to eat before 6pm. it helps losing weight, i guarantee you that! :-)

jugsjugs,
I think this is both subjective and individual.
As for me, due to my work and traveling schedules I am eating almost like 5 times a day my body just needs to adjust especially when I am crossing different time zones. So, people around me actually could see me eating every moment and I am very comfortable with it.
My portions especially during main meals are literally quite small and I do not feel bloated or filled, which is important for me when I work. It is also through this that I am able to manage myself from becoming overweight.

jugsjugs.
Actually, what you had described is also similar to the white collar working class nowadays.
It is just another contributing factor to the increase in the list of unhealthy lifestyles.

I find that alot of people eat a meal and then sit down all day either at home or at work and therefore they are not burning the food off where as if they were to eat smaller amounts it would help them.I find that there are people that can eat lots of things and never get any bigger where as there are other people that pound on the weight. If people are on the go all the time it is easier for them to keep the weight down.

Definitions and times for meals vary. Every type of eating is more by habit. Medical advice says frequent eating in small quantities is always advisable. Generally main meals lunch and dinner are heavier. Taking snacks, in my opinion comes out of habit. I have my break fast and lunch and light dinner/supper. I do not go for any snacks in between. Maybe I am forced into this because I hardly exercise. Well, it keeps me fit.

I don't really snack between meals, but it could be because of my current living situation. I'm a college student and I'm on a very tight budget. So I only really buy food to make meals with and I only really eat meals. Sometimes I actually only eat lunch and dinner and skip breakfast entirely. I'm never really hungry and still satisfied with the amount I am able to eat while on this budget.

I think with alot of people they do lead a hectic life style and so they tend to grab whatever they can to eat as they are too busy to cook for themselves or too tired to cook. Also i think alot of people tend to have a meal or lots of snacks before they go to bed and they do not burn off the food so thats another thing that makes them gain weight.

I do the wii fit, so I know that my BMI is average actually in the lower average, so I am not worried about getting fat. BUT I still have developed a little bit of fat around my tummy because I am 15 pounds heavier ( i was underweight before) so I watch my calories burned and calorie intake, with an exercise plan, the way to lose way is to every day cut out a little bit of calories in your diet.

The trick is to eat healthy snacks and smaller portions at meals. If you're eating full meals and then snacking on candy, you're not going to do too well...

Actually, I've heard that when you are trying to lose weight you should eat between four and six times each day, our have something to eat about every four hours while you are awake. That said, I do typically snack between meals and I don't think it is a harmful thing as long as you are snacking on the right things. That said, typically when I am snacking I will munch on fruit, nuts or yogurt. I believe if you are eating a lot of junk then you will never be able to lose weight.

Rejecting snacks and having meals on time is the best and basic way of losing weight to the exclusion of doing exercises and eating diet pills. I also plan to lose weight,so I start this plan from keeping farm away the snaks, such as cakes, candy and sweet bread and I try my best to make myself full when I have the three meals everyday so as to I will have no will to eat snack between meals. A period of time later,I found this is effective and I suggest people who want to lose weight adopt it as soon as possible.

according to the "professionals" eating in small portions frequently (about 5 to 6 times a day) I said SMALL okay... is better than eating once or twice in bigger portions... because if you eat in small portions it will digest faster so your metabolism increases eventually... and DONT skip meals... you'll just starve yourself... but of course you need to eat the "healthy food" dont expect to shred those unwanted pounds if you eat cakes, ice cream, burgers and chocolates included to those meals... you can cheat once or twice a week at the most...
hey... no pain no gain... or lose wait...
have fun all day!!!
:)
