Diffrence between all the types of RAMS

I know there are a lot of RAM types out in the market. I'd like to know the difference between them, and the meaning of their specs if they have any, aside from it's memory size.
I also know that DDR3 came after DDR2 etc, but what's so different about them (except the port).
what is DIMM? SODIMM? what do you call the RAMs for laptops?
Basically, I'd like to know the differences in the RAMS and all of its types.

From memory...
SIMM - Single Inline Memory Module
DIMM - Dual Inline Memory Module
RIMM - Rambus Inline Memory Module.
The different types of DRAM are based on the Data Rate of the Memory Module, so DDR3 would be the fastest where SDRAM is quite old by today's standards
