Do you think public schools in America must have uniforms?

Majority of the public schools don't have uniforms in America. This leads students to give more importance to what they wear in school. Unfortunately, this gives creates peer pressure and feeling of sadness to many students who cannot afford to constantly wear fashionable clothes. Some are not even accepted if they were something too plain. Such thing is usually seen in girls' crowd. Do you think now American schools should introduce uniforms to students? I feel it somehow gives boost to equality because no one has to think of what to wear next.

Actually, more than terrorists we have gang problems associated with the clothes. Every year someone gets shot by unidentified gang members in my former school. No one can even say who those people are.

I give you props on the intriguing discussion.
I think uniforms would help create a uniform student body free of prejudices such as how wealthy by what you wear, etc. It also makes it easier on the parents! They don't need to buy a ton of clothes for the child and it's easy to decide what th e child is going to wear.

Thank you for the response. I agree with you. There are so many problems linked to the "fashionable" clothes, but I do not understand why they are overlooked. Much of the bullying in schools also takes place because of this."That kid's cloth tells he is an outcast. So lets go abuse him".
Then think of the kids from under previlaged homes. How they must be feeling to see their wealthy peers coming to school in all new clothes while they can afford only a sweatshirt and two pairs of jeans?
Many kids told me how they felt depressed in schools because of their peers' cool garments. I feel a child at that age must think of playing in the open air and preparing for the future. But clothes usually force them to think of what they are missing.

Yes, uniforms definitely create a feeling of being united and at the same time an emotional attachment with the school. It is not easy to see this in United States. Usually, kids divide themselves in groups. There is one that is called the coolest kids who wear all fashionable clothes. Then there is that nerd kid groups where students wear simple sweatshirts or polo shirts.
