It was reported that president-apparent Noynoy Aquino is eyeing talk show host Boy Abunda as secretary of the Department of Tourism. Though Abunda has reportedly declined the offer, do you think that it would be a wise decision for Noynoy to put him on that position?
Please answer objectively. Let's set aside Boy Abunda being gay. Do you think that he has the capacity to be head of the said government body?

i think boy abunda suits the position of a chairman for the MTRCB rather than a tourism secretary. no doubt that mr.abunda is intelligent and a self-made man but i don't think he'll give up his showbiz career for a position in the government.

I guess so, at least if he's put as chair of the MTRCB then that's pretty close to his line of profession, don't you think?

yes, let's be objective. i think he is capable given the "influence" he has. but i dont know if it will help the image of the new president. i'm sure there are others that are equally deserving of the post and will be as effective or even more effective than boy.
how about you? do you think he can head it properly?
cheers and happy myLotting!

Thanks for your opinion. To answer your question, if he can head it properly, I think that Boy Abunda would have to learn the ropes first before he plunges into a new "career." Heading a government department is different from hosting a talk show, mediating between actors, or writing columns about showbiz.
What makes me actually shudder is the fact that Noynoy is thinking of appointing "friends" in the government. Seems to me the rise of another Kamag-anak/Kaibigan Inc. I think Noynoy is better off appointing those who are capable of promoting the beauty of the Philippines than choosing one who is closely associated with him. Just my opinion.

moonchild117, I agree with what you said in the second paragraph. That was actually one of the first things that entered my mind when I heard the news that Ninoy Aquino appointed Boy Abunda. What the? I smell return of political favors. I just really think that although Ninoy Aquino is a good guy, sincere and all, but as a president, I don't think that's all it takes. Hopefully, he won't end up the same as his mother. Used by the rich families here in the Philippines to make themselves richer and more powerful.

Yeah. Out of delicadeza, he should refrain from doing such. It gives the wrong impression of his (future) presidency.

Yeah this is one controversial appointment Noy has made. We all know that Boy Abunda is a close friend of Kris Aquino and the Aquino Family for a long time. I think experience wise he could make good use oif his influence over showbiz to promote tourism in the Philippines. But, I think qualification wise he might be questionable in terms of that since he is not in line with the tourism industry.
It is just prudent for Boy to deny the job offer since it is really not in his line of interest I guess. I salute Boy Abunda for declining and not taking advantage of the opportunity offered to him.

I guess he can earn more from his current job than taking in the government post plus the controversies from within the government agencies sometimes could not be contained that easily where if he is on showbiz he already knows the ins and outs of the industry that he remains untainted in the industry.

I agree. I think he still has a lot to learn if he plans to enter the world of politics. Being a head of a government department is very much different from being a talk show host and talent manager.

if we are going to check his backgound, he is capable but he cannot perform his job as a tourism secretary. based on what he say yesterday on the news. he says that he is not ready to quit the entertainment arena. it only means that he is not yet ready to have some obligations merely on a higher postion. so it means that he himself believed that it is not yet his time for that position.

At least he was honest enough to say that he is not ready, that he is not up to the task as tourism secretary. Well, that just means we'll still see more of him on TV in the coming days.

I think Mr. Boy Abunda could head a department, but not now. It's not that he doesn't know it, there's no other way of learning politics than being in it. What he lacks, I think is the passion of the type of public service requested of him.
Choosing Boy Abunda, I think would somehow tarnish his slowly decreasing reputation. Not because Mr. Boy Abunda is gay, nor because he lacks experience but because he's a friend.
I think I see why Mr. Abunda was even considered. It's because of his great communication skill. Let's face it, he has great communication skills and has emerged to be one of the most respected people in showbiz. If you look at the gay celebrities, they usually are comedians, fame depends on how good they make themselves or others look funny, unlike Mr. Abunda, who doesn't have to make a fool out of anybody just to be heard.
This skill is invaluable in all aspects of the government, but he still needs to re-program his mindset.
I didn't know that he declined the position, I thought it wasn't offered yet, but maybe I'm just late with the news. If ever he did decline, we should commend him for accepting that he is not yet capable.

Well, good thing he might have declined. It is really annoying to see people, who are not really capable of running a Department. I hope the government will be less of showbiz in the future.

Being gay will never be a reason. But, the Philippine government IS NOW ENTERING HOLLYWOOD STATE! Too many, politicians/movie stars, and now we have TV HOST/government servants? You must be kidding me? I really do not think Boy Abunda would be a good addition to the government. For one, he is a talk show host, he will be the one to meet and greet ministers/ prime ministers and other high ranking officials. I hate to say it, but the Philippines is now MOVIE/TV COUNTRY!

Yeah, I agree with you. It's actually freaking me out that there are already a handful of elected officials that are from showbiz. And most likely they won because of their fame, thanks to their celebrity status. Back to the topic, well I think he's declined the offer, so that's one less celebrity in public office.

Yup, I am also worried about this. It is really annoying to see, the winners of the elections to be has been showbiz personalities. And they are on top of the voting polls. You may tend to ask what did they do? Did they make things better to the Philippines?

That is one obvious example of Kris influencing Noynoy. Abunda is NOT capable of leading any government agency and he will just add to the growing list of incompetent showbiz personalities-turned-government officials. Good that he had the decency to turn down the offer.

Maybe he's just doing that because that's his best friend's sister. Personally I think he's better on TV, rather than in some clunky office doing the same thing every single day. Media is his better tool in talking to more people, I think.

i think boy is capable to be with that position, whatever it may be, as i see boy if very much mature and very intelligent one, very dignified one instead of getting anybody from that line of work.

He may be mature, intelligent or dignified, but does he have the chops to be the Secretary of Tourism? And wouldn't his association with Noynoy be questioned?

No, he has no capacity... he is good only in tv talk show. He better stay there or else it will be the end of his career.
They are dependent on their script, though they can adlib sometime but with limiation. Though he manage some good stars but I don't believe he can make it to tourism heading the citizen in general.
He can do nothing if he is alone. He can't just stand there and talk without those dedicated crew around.
People in showbiz are like robots in their work. Like a vending machine.
It is good that he declined the offer.President-apparent should select better who will sit on that position. I know there are some capable out there waiting to be appointed with good qualification better than Boy Abunda.

Yeah. Sad to say that some of these capable persons are not in Noynoy's shortlist of candidates. Oh well. I can't help but think this is one way to pay back his supporters...

Alright. Being gay his nothing to do with any person's potential. So to say that he can't run a government post just because he's gay is ignorant beyond ignorant. Boy Abunda has done a lot in his field of business. I'm not a fan of his talk shows but nevertheless, he displays intelligence and deserves an amount of respect.
Now having said that, I don't think it's a wise choice to put Boy Abunda up in the Tourism Department. With all due respect to Mr. Abunda, he is ill-equipped and has yet to learn about what the nation needs in terms of tourism. Tourism is one way to give the Philippines a bigger spot on the map, but there is a lot that needs to be done. I kinda wish that Gordon was back in that post, but that guy has to look for another way to make things work for Filipinos here.

You are right. It's funny though that some people choose to judge Boy Abunda because he is gay. That's why I already made a point to tell it earlier that the responses here should not be based on his being gay.
I agree with you, though he may seem to be smart, he still has a lot to learn in being in government. Like you, I also wish Gordon to be once again head of the Department of Tourism. I just don't think he's in Noynoy's shortlisted candidates for the position.

It will be fair if Boy Abunda have the skills and knowledge in handling the Tourism sector but as of now, I have no idea if Boy Abunda is well versed in terms Tourism itself. He has not been exposed nor has experienced managing this sector since he is more versed in the show business. Given this, it will not be wise choosing him. Also, for the sake of delicadeza, he must not be given the post as he is a close family friend.

being gay has nothing to do with his capacity to be head of any department. or with anything for that matter. i think he can, and he has that capacity. but if he declines, then we just have to respect his decision. and i know he has a good explanation as to why he is declining the offer..

If Boy Abunda has a capability to do the job, why we question his capability. Noynoy must be wise to assign a head in his administration. If he think that person is incapable he must not assign him.

I have read about this, though I'm still not sure if this story is even really true. Cause I don't see why would Noynoy appoint someone whom he knows can raise a lot of eyebrows from the public. I don't think he is that stupid, or I don't think his advisers would ever let him act so stupid. Hehehe.
Anyway, I have nothing against Boy Abunda, but it really does rub off like it's more of a favor rather than an intelligent choice. I do hope that they would clear out the rumors and just say whether the story has any truth to it or not.

Well, I have nothing against Mr. Abunda. As a talk show host he has shown his intellect and capacity in doing things because of his popularity and background. However, leading a government agency is far different from showbiz hosting. The scope and the responsibilities as a secretary of a government body is huge and it is critical for the country as a whole. On the other hand, I don't think that the appointment of Mr. Abunda will do good on Mr. Aquino's image for as we know Mr. Abunda is a very close friend of Kris Aquino. What would be his critics say about that?
Anyway, by the looks of how things are working for Noynoy I may say that it is too early to judge. Personally, everything remains to be proved.

I would say that if Boy Abunda would be appointed as Sec of DOT, he is capable of handling it. Knowing that he is a traveler person, his been to a lot of places from around the world. But I know that is not just the qualifications needed. But any ways, Boy would be easy to showcase the good points in the Philippines. Because he is good on that. Governance I know he has it, he also taking his masters degree. So I guess he has the governance ability.

Boy Abunda is a well respected host and image in showbiz but, it would be a different world for him if he would step into politics. Noynoy Aquino must take into consideration Boy Abunda's political background and if he is really suitable for the position.

I think that he is not the right one for the position. He has no relevant experience to handle the Department of Tourism.
