Vacationing Budget

Well I made this discussion yesterday but our internet went down, and the discussion didn't go through, so here we go again. This year we are going on vacation, and so my husband and I are already saving up for it. This actually got me to thinking about how much other people intend to save for a vacation, and whether or not it depends on where your destination is. My husband and I are going to save up for the vacation, but we really don't necessarily have to. That's not to say that we are well off, we're not... All I'm saying is we're actually not going by ourselves and so in theory don't really need to save (we're going with family)... Anyway, here I am babbling and I can't honestly remember what it was I wrote yesterday, all I know is that it was good, lol... Are you saving for a vacation this year? Do you already know how much your going to save? Do you save any extra just in case you spend a few more days where you're going? Do you have extra money to shop with, or just enough to eat with? Are you even frugal when your on vacation, or do you let loose a little?

When my family goes on vacation my husband and I plan for it months ahead. We check hotel rates, airfare (if we have to travel by air), other transport expenses at destination(taxi, bus, train), food, shopping, and all other possible fees that go with it. We set a timetable so that we know how much to stash away from our monthly income to build the funds for the planned vacation. Planning ahead is the key to stress-free vacation. My family just came back from a week-long vacation in Hong Kong, China, and it was so much fun.

That is a good way to go, checking rates and such. It's very nice that you can do that online, inputting a date and checking what the rates will be for hotels and airfare, things like that. There's even a site, and I am not sure if it's worldwide, but you can check gas rates at different places, so if you plan to drive to or in your destination you can figure out how much you're most likely going to paying per gallon. Of course this only works if you check right before you leave, or constantly check before whilst planning so you can see the fluctuation. I am sure that it was very relaxing, was Hong Kong as busy as it seems on t.v.?

A lot of people wanted to get great pictures of the whole city, sounds like it is a nice tourist attraction, I'm sure the train gets heavily traveled during the tourist season, and most likely worked on before the tourist season begins to get everything up to par. Glad you had fun.

I know what you mean. Well it is busy yes, but it's not like the one we see on TV or the movies, thank God! I've noted thought that more tourists were queuing to ride the Peak Tram, an "ancient" train that brings the people to the highest part of the city where you see the spectacular view of the whole of the city, than in any other destinations. There I can really say that it's so busy.

Well, I would recommend, you looking into expenses prices for where you are going. You maybe going with family, but often when left to family for one to enjoy is too compromising, consider food for two, three times a day times the number of days you will be there. Also look into fun things to do and some of the shopping prices, so you can also enjoy that, much is often up for rent so it can be expensive. If you are going to be at a place where you can see shows, consider prices for some to go to, and even tours pricing, find out about transportation, car rental and compare. If I am going on vacation I would opt for an all inclusive vacation price and those side factors. Have money for return tickets and lodging, just in case it does not work out with the family.

I appreciate all of this indepth information. We're driving, it's not too awfully far away. I don't think there will be any complications with the family, and even if there was running back home wouldn't solve them as hubby and I are going with those we live with... so... lol but thanks again, I really do appreciate all the nice and kind advice.

You are welcome! I hope you will have an amazing time. I do advice you to do some research and remember that hotels have what are called: concierge. You can actually call any hotel and ask for cost and arrangements so you can gain real knowledge of the local costs and practices as well as attractions, use the internet to find out what is available. Look out for discount tickets and booklets, along the way you will see visitor centers, so do stop in and collect brochures, those will serve you to learn what is the latest thing going, discounts and attractions, if not great excitement and bonding conversation. I would not be too proud for visiting buffet restaurants, just because its alway nice to eat all you can eat. Don't forget your camera and take loads of photos :) Often water rides cost and average of 20 dollars per person, if you are going to the beach and want to have beach chairs for the day, those cost about $30 per chair for the day. Try and find out about parking places and prices too. Inquire about toll charges during the trip on the road and rest stops for emergencies. If anyone in the family has some medical condition, please be sure to prepare for along the way, medications and local hospital information, insurance cards. Mapquest will help you plan your road trip, milage, gas expenses and stops.

I have only stayed in one hotel in my life, and that was for prom back my senior year of high school. I'm not sure what the prices of a hotel are but I can imagine them to be mighty hefty. My husband and I intend to help his parents with paying for half of the hotel, and if we don't do that we'll either pay for supper for one or two of the nights, or maybe pay for our own knick knacks and trinquets.

this past vacation we wanted to go somewhere, but neither of our vehicles are highway stable.... so, we saved changed from the first of the year until the end of April and went and spent just one night in a local motel. It was fun, but sure not all that exciting at all. It was just too quick. I made myself a promise to figure out how to save enough money so that next time we can stay at least 3 or 4 nights, but honestly, I don't even make enough money to keep gas in my car. So....I just don't know. I am going to talk to him about it, but he won't know when his next week off is until about September, and it's always funny times because he's about 12th down the line to be able to choose his weeks for the year. I would love nothing more than to rent a cabin somewhere for a few nights. First thing to work on is getting the transmission fixed in his Durango. Marsha

We did plan to go on vacation for about a week to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona but that was going to be last year I think, heck I don't know, lol. My husband and I are still living with his parents and I lost my job a few months back and to be honest have been too lazy to find another one. What I make online we don't know what we're going to do with. We usually have oru ideas but after that we just don't know. I hope you can figure out some more ways to save and be able to go stay at a hotel for a few more days. There is a place about an hour away from here my husband and I went to one year. We didn't stay but for 12 hours as we just didn't do well being there alone. We got scared, bored, and couldn't sleep.

I wanna get a job too so your job or might job might interfere, there's no telling. Even so we maybe can go later, around Christmas. We'll just have to see, and besides the longer we wait to go on vacation the more money we will have saved up, though there's a lot to consider now lol.

Hehe, letting friends and relatives foot the bill, very clever. My husband and I could do that ourselves but we won't. We're going to pay for a little bit of what we spend when we do go on vacation this year. I was thinking about it earlier, and it's really not all that far away, the months will go by and soon it will be time to soak up the sun.

I can't afford to take a dump much less go on vacation. I love to go to this little resort town up in the mountains. It isn't very far away and it is a lovely drive up there. I used to go when I had plenty of money so I could shop alittle and eat in nice places. What is fun about being frugal when you are on vacation? I think vacation is a time to be extravagant and have fun. Can't do any of that now days.

I like to spend what I can when I go on vacation, but I've not been on vacation very much. I guess it pays to be frugal even on vacation nowadays. Hubby and I are having to save, but to be all honest we don't have to pay our way, we just offered to pay part of our way on vacation this year. Hope you can take a day trip up to the mountain town sometime soon.

Hey Cowgirl! I couldn't afford to anywhere if it meant saving up because I have nothing to save up with! I want to get new carpet or re-do my floors and I'd rather do that, and don't think that will happen! But, I am going to see my Mom in Florida! So, I will be going on a vacation, just won't cost me any money! Mom will be paying and since I am staying at her house it won't cost me anything! It is maybe not the ideal vacation because we usually can't spend too long together, but we have some business she wants to take care of so after we do that I can enjoy myself swimming which is my favorite thing to do! I hope your vacation is fun! And I would of course take some extra money to shop! It's always good to have some money with you for extras!

Sometimes when ya have the money ya have to forfeit fun things, so I can understand rather getting the floors cleaned then vacationing. My mom and I do get along, but it's the fact that we never talk and see each other that keeps us that way I think. I haven't been swimming in years, can you believe it? I almost miss it, lol.

I'm going on vacation next Monday. Going to family in U.K and then my sisters, daughter and I are going to Rome for a few days.I have never been to Rome and this is on my bucket list.My sister bought me the ticket to U.K. as a birthday present and her son bought my daughter's ticket. She landed this morning. I so saved for my fare to Rome which is probably about US1000 but that does include hotel and breakfast. I'v nickled and dimed since before Christmas for this trip. I hope to buy some clothes but only if the price is right as Europe is much more expensive than the USA. I just love shopping in the USA at sale time. Yes, I like to let loose a little but I also look out for gifts that I can buy for family and friends at Christmas too (only at sale price) I guess that I am really very frugal still as I do not like to waste money

About your last comment on not wasting money, I can understand. Why go home with knick knacks and goodies, but later a guilty feeling that you spent too much? Definitely would make me rethink another vacation budget (for the next vacation). I believe you've talked about going to Rome and to the UK. I hope that the weather will treat you nicely, and that there will be plenty of sales and things to your liking. I hope you enjoy Rome, I had a teacher back in school who went to Italy, I believe they stayed in Rome. I've seen the video and video from the movies etc, and it seems like such a beautiful beautiful place. Have fun, stay safe, and keep being you!

I am also trying to save up for a vacation. But I think it won't happen this year. So, I am thinking of spring 2011. Maybe a 1 or 2 night repositioning of a cruise ship. Or maybe just flying down to California again and taking advantage of the many theme parks there. Here's how frugal I am, I save up all my points which I get from using my cards when I go on business trips for my work. And then I sort of 'let loose' with my points when we go on vacation.

My husband and I are hoping to go out of town for the weekend. Yellowstone National Park has a free weekend August 14th and 15th and we need to save money fo a hotel and for food. I am hoping to save money and am trying to make money on here as well as on a couple of other web sites so I can save enough money. I know that I will be making sandwiches for the car ride which will save us money. I wish I did not have to save money, but unforunately I do.

We are having to save money as well. We have one bill that we could pay off before the trip and then not have to worry about it so we'd save the money we would be using to pay that bill, on the trip. Another thing is of course me working online. We would probably have no need to save money if I had a job as with us both working one of our paychecks alone could be saved for the trip we're going to be taking. That's just life though, I mean having to save, there are some people who are fortunate enough to not have to, save that is, and I wish I knew them, lol just kidding.

I really like going to vacation it made me relax on my very stressful life. I dont think so if I could take vacation this year because my job demand plus I am enrolled taking another course and I have to spent a year in that course before I could graduate. But my family is planning to take vacation this coming december its just a family reunion but it will held in our city that my mom never been to. Its just my mom and dad going I guess. If I could arrange an vacation leave I will come with them. I am anticipating, so I am saving for myself expenses if that time comes. Like buying stuff that I dont see in our city or going to places that I've never been. I could be frugal or loose a little it depends on my mood.

I hope you are able to go on the family reunion vacation and buy some things for yourself that you can't find in your city, or just that you like. Everyone needs a vacation now and then, we've not gone on a vacation in a few years, and I've never gone on a vacation regularly. It will be my husband and I, as well as his parents.

I think this year we are staying home because our funds are low. Therefore we will take in our parks for movie night and our free concerts that we have at the park.

I don't think my husband and I could afford to go on this trip alone, nor would we go on this trip alone. We don't do very well on vacation by ourselves, last time we went on vacation we stayed 12 hours... We're going to save as much as we can to chip in on the vacation though. Wish you could scrounge some money up for a nice day trip somewhere nice, but nothing beats community fun!
