How do you keep your cpu cool? I used to have a fan that got loud and didn't cool enough. I bought a new one after a few years and it's much better now. But i'll build my next pc on my own and i want to know if heatsinks and heatpipes are better than fans if anyone has one? My ultimate pc would be totally silent but i don't think i'll use water to cool it so what do you suggest? I just put a nylon sock over the fan hole because i read that keeps the dust out of the case and dust will eventually slow any pc fan.

Liquid nitrogen is probably better !
Seriously, I have not built a computer since ten years, and heatpipes were not there, but I think it is the best technology available : the pc is silent and overclocking is still possible. As you said, dust is a big problem in a computer, and it is mainly caused by fans pulling it inside. I noticed the idea of the nylon sock for my desktop .

Try it but hope you monitor the temperatures i already torn my nylon away because i think it raised the temperature. Dust is so annoying i've been vacuum cleaning my pc for ages now. I cleaned a smoker's pc once ant there was a jungle inside. I found this list of alternative cooling on the net once and people were using swimming pool water to cool pc's and someone even filled the whole case with oil. I'll think hard until i decide what to do for my next pc since i have it like less than half meter away from my head all the time. Thanks for your comment, hope the nylon works for you, there are also some filters you can buy. Hope you don't have a cat because mine sleeps on my pc and her tail gets sucked in from time to time That can't be good Have a great day!

The best way keep your fan in a good condition or with out making loud noise is to clean it with can of fresh air ( probably every month ) if you can try removing the cpu and clean the dust by this way your fan should not make much noise ..
Thanks,
