When it's too hot I don't want to eat

I don't know why it is but as soon as the weather starts to turn really hot I start losing my appetite. I find it's hard to eat when it's hot and I only want to eat fruit and salads and lighter fare. I also find that I eat less solid foods and consume more liquids.
And who wants to cook in the heat anyway? This time of year lots of people like to grill their food outdoors but I don't see how cooking in the heat outside is better than cooking in the heat inside. With the heat generated by a grill it's like standing by your oven.
The rain rolled in about half an hour ago and it's helping to keep the temperature from being oppressive today, thank goodness. I needed to go out but now I will have lunch instead and see how long it takes the weather to pass. (Don't want to deal with street flooding.)
I have salad fixings and leftover pizza. I've taken the pizza out to warm up to room temperature so I can just nuke it slightly in the microwave. It's really good pizza too!
What do you like to eat when the weather is hot?

I am very much the same as you, I cannot eat very much, even though I know that I need to eat something, so I just have a small salad, or something because even that seems to fill me up in this weather. Other than that I just pick on things like chicken, or crisp breads, but I think it is because I drink so much more fluids on a hot day, that the fluids fill me up, and make me not really fancy food. I dont know if that is the reason, but thats just my opinion

Fluids can definitely fill you up. I like to have lots of juices around when it is hot so I can still get nutrition. I also like fruits that have a lot of water like grapes. They are refreshing and fill you up at the same time.

I think it's so we drink more. If we had a big appetite, we probably wouldn't drink enough. Also, I like yogurt, fruit, fresh veggies from the garden, berries, etc.
Is someone wants to cook outdoors, there is another option besides a grill, a solar cooker or solar oven. I already had a discussion on that. But if you are happy with salads and fruit and fresh veggies, there is nothing wrong with that. My husband always has to have a hot meal with something cooked. I can live without it like you.
Tonight I cooked a little fish and had some fresh green beans with leftover french fries. I zapped the fries for my hubby and the green beans. But I like my beans without cooking this time of year.
Cottage cheese and pineapple that I make myself I like this time of year (the pre-made stuff in the stores, I don't know what they do to it, but it just doesn't taste as good).
Take care

When the weather is hot, I hate having to cook! Our house gets so warm when we use the stove/oven! Plus, just having to stand over that hot stove is painful because it's so warm and yuck! On days that it's really hot I try to make "cool" things for dinner. Some of those things are hot dogs (I can easily microwave those!), Tuna fish sandwiches (no oven/stove required!), PB&J sandwiches, salads, etc. I also often use fruit as a side when I'm making dinners that don't require cooking!

I think cold salads like pasta or fruit or tuna are ideal for summer! Anything you can make a big batch of and have it last a few days makes such a difference when it's hot.

Hello, Canellita. After the coldest winter we've had in Spain for over 30 years, we're now having the hottest spring and early summer in living memory - at least in my part of Spain. Temperatures have topped 40 degrees this week, and we're spending a lot of time in the pool.
We're just the same as you - fruits and salads are the order of the day. I keep a sliced melon in the fridge in hot weather, as I find it more refreshing than a drink. Oh well, with all the swimming and salads, I've lost 2 of the 6lbs I gained while we were in England already.

Hi Sandra! As you know I experienced a bit of the cold winter that would not leave! When I read 40 degrees I thought 'that's cold!' but you meant Celsius, right?
Congrats on dropping the pounds!

Hi C,
So when it's summer you are in your best slim and fit figure. AS you are on full diet. As in fruit and liquid diet. This is the best time for you to undergo cleansing diet as you can survive it. It's different with me. Aside from more water intake i enjoy eating a lot when it's summerand i diet myself during cold season. i just love having hot soup.

Ha Ha! Maybe I would be slim and fit if I exercised more! I guess I am slim enough and as long as my clothes still fit I am happy. Hot soup warms you all over and this time of the year I can only have it if I am someplace with air conditioning!

So far so good! I finished a blog post and a couple articles and now I need to fix lunch and organize some things for a yard sale.
Are you on facebook?

My boyfriend has that problem. It wouldn't be a problem for me because I as a woman love to loose weight but he is not big enough and tries to gain as much weight as possible. However he don't feel like eating when it is hot.I work all day long so there is no chance that I don't feel the hunger.I need energy to work so it means I need food.

Does your boyfriend consume more liquids when it is hot? Fruits and juices have more calories because of their sugars so he might be able to maintain his weight better that way.

Well that is good he drinks so much water. Sweet drinks are not the best thing but he should at least do orange juice or something with potassium.

Yes he does use more liquids and this is the main reason why he later do not feel the hunger. His stomache is full of water only because he hates sweet drinks and that is why he doesn't drink juices let's say or even dizzy drinks as they are also said to have some influence over the wieght.

Sounds like you have a good handle on how to combat you different intake in summer heat. I cooked a meatloaf last night and the house heated up. Yech, but both hubby and I were hungry for meatloaf. Fruit and increasing liquids is fantastic. I planned on chili in the next day or too and sausage and veg next night or too. Both require using the stove. Oh well, dinner (supper) is our substantial meal of the day. Both breakfast and lunch are light. I did buy banana's and apples and radishes for snack.
Prosperous mylotting to you

At least the weather is not as hot in the evening as it is in the middle part of the day. Depending on where you live you can cook late or early to avoid some of the heat and warm the food as needed.

Hi, Canellita. I like to be indoors when it is very hot. I am also the type of person that eats less during the summer time. I will drink more than anything. I have been like this for many years. I don't know why, but I just am. If I would ever have to cook and grill, I would make sure that I have cool air inside of my home. I can't stand cooking in a very hot kitchen with no cool air.

I wish it was easier to keep fresh fruits around for times when it is so hot you don't want to cook. Even salad can get a little boring sometimes. I need to learn how to make ceviche and some other quick cool weather no-cook dishes!

I think the heat affects our eating habits in a big way. If we are hot and uncomfortable. the last thing on our minds is eating a meal. Something cool and refreshing hits the spot instead. I eat a lot of colder foods as the summer comes on.

I like to cool down with mango ice or mango sorbet! Popsicles are good for cooling down also as are fruits and juices. It just seems like the digestive system works slower when it's hot!

when it is too hot i used to take kaman kanji(Tamil traditional food) and it is made with ragi and with rice..the process is to bring it to liquid and we take that stuff with hot spicy materials and even a little will give a lot of fresh and it will keep the body so cool that it will protect us from all kind of sun disease.. then we have a lots of fruit with sweet, there are a lot of things which we have to learn from other culture and i loved to ear what other culture try to teach..

I like to eat Indian food but I have no idea if it is Tamil or some other kind. It's the only time I really like to eat spicy food, actually. There isn't much variety here in Indian restaurants so I guess that is why they don't make a distinction of what kind of food is being served.

Is coco salad made with coconut? I have not heard of halo-halo. How do you make it?

Halo-halo sounds like a smoothie. I used to use ice but now I use a mixture of fresh and frozen fruits and juice.
My grandfather likes coconut. I wonder if he would like coco salad... do you use the coconut milk or another kind?
@ericpapasit (1274)

yes it is made by shredding the coconut meat and added by milk and other goodies...
while halo-halo(mixed-mixed), is mixture of grind ice, flakes, jack-fruit,etc.... Sweet....

You are the second person to mention halo-halo. I have never heard of this before. Is it a drink?
Be careful with the soft drinks and starbucks. Anything with caffeine will dehydrate you more.

I think this is a natural defense of our body. It takes quite a bit of liquid to digest foods. So when you are hot, your body is saying "no, don't eat a lot, maybe just a little bit of juicy, watery fruit, and drink a lot of water". That is why, if you are in a survival situation, and cannot find water, but have food, you should not eat it, because you will just dehydrate yourself.

You have a point. I have been trying to get my 80+ year old grandfather and my 60+ year old aunt to understand that they need to drink more water. Not only will eating without drinking the right liquids dehydrate you it can lead to other problems liek thrush.

I had a little cold pasta today -- tortellini tossed in pesto with artichokes and cherry tomatoes! I am hoping to finish my kitchen before the end of the summer so I can get back to making smoothies!

I know what you mean. I don't feel like eating much when it is warm outside either. You would think that I'd be dropping some pounds off from it. I love eating foods on the grill like chicken, shrimp, zucchini and potatoes. We also always seem to have some watermelon, cherries and pineapple in the house when it is hot out. These foods are so refreshing to me.

Is there any particular reason why you like fast food when the weather is hot?
