Are some people too selfish, they won't want to train you everything

Cross - training among a department employee can be a good idea, because someone might take a long vacation some day, and someone needed to be able to take over the job left behind, right? Although the supervisor mandate everyone should do the cross - training. some people just unwilling to teach you everything they know. I don't understand why, they might afraid of you will do better job than them or something. They only show you superficially, but not step by step, or into detail why you should do this. When you ask questions, they just might not want to answer you. Have you encountered such situation before?

This is completely true! I myself am guilty of doing this. I guess we don't want to train others everything because we are too selfish and don't want them to outdo us.

wow, but sometimes, competition can promote your desire to be better, don't you think? If someone is better than you, you have to admit it. Trying to improve yourself to a higher level is the key.

hi there kingparker.
well, if this isn't frustrating... i know how this feels. however, i haven't experienced too much of this when i was working. luckily, when i had to be trained due to promotion, the people i worked and sat with were all nice and accommodating to me. they are willing to cascade whatever knowledge they have to make my work a lot easier. i got a lot of techniques and am so thankful that they were all generous with such.
i also heard my friends' sentiments when they had to be trained. others would even bulge and help out on information. unless my friends persist on a question, they wouldn't give out what the know.
i think this is outright selfish. one must not be selfish when it comes to information. why withhold an information or technique if it's gonna benefit a co-employee. i think they are just quite threatened or jealous because the new ones might be performing better. also, they probably would want the trainee to experience the hard labor first.
whenever someone is being asked to be trained by me, i make certain that whatever the person needs to be equipped for the job, give it. it would a little help for the person to work at ease. however, i make sure that i do not spoon-feed. i want to see initiative. initiative plus good technique equals good job. ;-)

Some people dont like change, I always think in any workplace it can only be a good thing to learn as much as you can, this way you get a better understanding of other peoples jobs roles and you will be better support for each other. Some people just havent got the patience to train someone, and some people, like you said are afraid that you will do a better job than them. It could also be that maybe they are afraid that it will take too much time, are the supervisors offering to provide extra time/money for this training? Because sometimes a task can take much longer if you have to explain it step by step and maybe they are worried that it will mean more work for them but no extra pay.
