Have you ever worked in a nursing home, and did you like it?

I have worked in several nursing homes, have lots of certificates, have done housekeeping, dietary, nursing assistant, medication aide, social services and activities. The work is very rewarding, I love people, old and young. The coworkers and admin. are often the biggest part of the stresses. I also enjoy working with children.

I was a patient in a rehab nursing home for four months and they were so wonderful to me, had me walking in four months and it had been diagnosed that I would never walk again. I now volunteer there as I want to give back some of what I received. I usually help with activities but they are always calling on me to motivate patients, who want to give up, with my story

That keeps you counting your blessings as well. What kind of activities do they do in a rehab facility. I know about activities in a traditional nursing home, as well as specifically for dementia residents. I would like to hear about others.

I worked in the kitchen of a nursing home, if that counts. It was the hardest work I ever did, and I only lasted one month there.

Thanks for commenting. Dietary is hard, with all the special meals, etc. The other thing is that food is often the last pleasure left to residents, and it never can meet the expectations or fill up the personal emptiness. Thanks for posting

Yes, I was a CNA while I was going to college to be a teacher, I was going to be a nurse, but I decided I wanted to teach instead, I now work from home as a child care giver, I loved it, the elderly are wonderful, they are fun to be around and have funny stories to tell.

I've worked in a lot of nursing homes over the years. I loved every minute of it! Seniors are a wonderful group to work with. I liked to get to know each and every one of them when I worked there. Lots of them had relatives that didn't come and visit as often as they would have wanted, and I always felt like they should feel that we were all an extended part of their 'family.' I used to like to get them talking about how and where they grew up, and to tell me stories they had from their childhood. It made them happy that somebody was interested, and even most of the ones who couldn't remember yesterday could remember bits from their childhood that made them happy. The other type of nursing home I worked in was for mentally challenged adult males. It was rewarding to work with these men. Each one had different mental capabilities, and you had to work with what they did have, it was a privilege to work with them and to be their nurse and friend.

I've done volunteer work in a nursing home before during highschool, I enjoyed it as some of the elderly were so friendly and appreciative.

Bless your heart, the world runs on volunteers. Generally you get more acceptance from the elderly than from your parents' generation. They are fascinated by all of your life and enthusiasm. Thanks for posting

I agree that the primary stresses of the job are the co-works and administration. I have worked many years in healthcare and LOVE the people I worked with. I tried working in a nursing home setting but couldn't stand it more than a week or two. I found a much better niche, working as a private contractor to private families...would stay with one family full-time until there was no longer a need

I have worked in nursing homes as a CNA and then got my LPN and worked in them. I really hated working in them. It wasn't the patients, it was the company and staff. I ran across a lot of lazy people that I would have to come behind and do my job plus theirs. I finally got out of the nursing.

Thanks for the response--are you out of nursing altogether, or just nursing homes? There are far too many people like you describe, and it is rough on the ones who are conscientious. I have worked both corporate and not-for -profit, the politics are all the same. I really like the residents, though, and my husband and I are signed up starting this month on a visiting program for people from our church who are in nursing homes.

I worked in one way back in 1964. back then you didn't have to get certified. I was a nurses ade. I worked nights and was there all alone. I was about 19 years old. I didn't like it. I had to clean up dirty diapers and give out med. in the morning. I had to get all the clients up in the morning. There were about 40 of them.

The regulations that went into effect in the seventies (OMBRA) made a big difference in staffing. That is a lot of hard work. I am sure it did not pay well either. As a side note, now almost all facilities use disposable incontinence products now. I hope you have a Happy new year.

My girlfriend worked in a nursing home before she became pregnant, she loved it she would love to return. She thinks it is very tough at times with them but she said it was so rewarding and some of them are the nicest people she has ever worked with.

Sometimes the elderly can be difficult, especially if they have dementia. For the most part I always tried to keep in mind what they have had to give up. I made some very good friends, and really felt loved, myself. Good help is essential. Wishing You and yours Happy New Year.

Yes. I have worked in several nursing homes. I started out working as a CNA, went back to school and started working as an LPN, then went back to school again and am currently working as an RN. I think it takes a special kind of person to work in with the general nursing home population. It's definitely not for everyone. You must have a lot of compassion and your main incentive for being there must be to care for the residents in the best way possible not for the money.

Great response, and so true. I believe that some people have a God given calling and talent for that work. I am one who can do the work, but prefer other jobs. I just basically try to pour myself out to make things all right, and I am very sad when my residents die. I will probably go back to working in a nursing home as a second job soon. It is my husband's primary job and love. Especially Alzheimers.

Yeah, my hubby has been fired from the best, due to politics. Where you are do they talk abljt "culture change" much? I think it is just another way to present what should be best standards of care.

There was one situation in my life that I want to work in nursing homes and took a course about it but I always faced with challenges and conflicts to get out of the country and work in nursing homes. I guess circumstances have prevented me to work in places with a lot of nursing homes like Canada. Though I love to work with children too I guess God have other plans for me. I have found my passion in Internet Marketing and on-line business but if this will take off I'll still want to extend help to aged people and unfortunate children.

God probably has a very good plan for you if you are willing to listen. Did you know that someplaces are combining homes for the elderly with daycare facilities? They say that the combination really benefits all involved. Happy New Year to you.

I have never worked in a nursing home but I have visited quite a few , I had an old aunt very dear to me spent the last few months of her life in a nursing home , She had Alzheimer's ( as both my parents do now) and the staff were angels , the treated her so gently , she faded away to skin and bone and they were so loving with her , I sat by her bedside for 2 days when she was dying , and when she finally went the staff were all crying with me , They were all truly just angels xxx

I have workred in a nursing home back in the 60s. I was there for about 6 months. It wasn't for me. I worked in the hospital as a nurses ade. I loked taking care of the elderly patient in the hospital but not in the nursing home setting. I found my self getting too impatient with them in the nursing home settting. They were not in the hospital very long. The hospital had more varitey with the patients. Back then you had to learn every thing on the floor there was no training except for LPNs Ades were taught to take temp. blood pressure and resperations. Hoew to make a bed and give a bath. Then you were own your own and had to learn the rest fromother nurse ades.

How blessed you are dear. I have never worked there. Perhaps I may though. I love offering a hand and filling someone with happiness. Old people are very neglected, and it would be nice to be a part of their lives in a possitive way.

I liked the parts where I felt like I brought some joy to their living. I recommend hospice care for families who have a loved one dying.

I also worked in varied facilities as an RN. I loved working in aged care as many of the residents are like family. I now work in community nursing visiting veterans in their homes so that they may stay in their own homes fdor as long as possible. It is very rewarding and a privilage to be a small part of their lives.

One of my first jobs as an teenager was a nurses aide. I dearly loved it. I enjoyed working with and becoming friends of the residents. I would sit and talk to them when I had time and they really appreciated it. I only had one unsettling situation; there were two elderly ladies that were roommates/friends and they were so senile that they'd poop their pants as they were walking down the hall and walk in it. They were oblivious to this and I truly did not enjoy cleaning them up or the floor. Other than that, I loved it.
