I applied for a bank account and a debit card in my local bank as I needed to purchase something online. The bank worker opened my bank account and immediately gave me a debit card having logo of mastercard. It has been four days now, but the card has still not been activated. I know it takes some time as they may have to associate my name and address to my card. But can anyone tell me how much time does it really take?

It should not take more than 40 working hours to activate the account. I also got my account kit with all the required details and card. You should contact bank to activate the account and card.

It depends on what days you had been waiting. Are you talking about 4 working days or just 4 calendar days? In my country It make take up to 7 working days, which is more than a week ;)

It has been partially activated and now can be used at ATMs but I still can't use it online. I have called them, they told me to register for mastercard's secure code service which I have done and am waiting for the response from them which is supposed to be received within 24 hrs. Anyway thanks for responding!

I dont know much about how long banks take to activate a credit card though if my memory serves me correctly it didnt take that long in my experinces. but you could ask your bank representative whats going on and maybe they will help you. But this is why I love my prepaid credit card because they have quick activation no overdraft fees and its safer then using my bank card I just load it with the amount I want to spend and wham I can shop, another benefit of having a prepaid credit card is that some of them have a credit builders program.

I think my bank doesn't provide prepaid card facility. If it does, then it is just great and this way is far more secure.

If it doesn't get activated by tomorrow then I would be revisiting the bank office.

Hi mturacom, here in my place once we have got either the master or visa card, we could activate the card by making call to the card service center. After the guy asking a few questions related to the key information about our particular to make sure that we are the right person to hold the said card we then could use the card to do any purchase immediately. At the moment almost all the card service counters under the banks here have upgrated their service and we could get the card applied after filling the required particulars as well as dropping our signiture. We even could make the phone call the service center using the phone at the counter. The staff on duty that day would help to make a call for us as well. Really fast and efficient eh! Happy posting

Whenever I applied for a debit card my bank did not give it to me immediately. They always gave me a VISA card and never a Master card. It always came after 15 days or so and it always came activated.

You have to receive that username and password, isn't it? That takes about a month, and at times you might have to follow it up. :)

In my country I have to activate it myself at the ATM. What does it say in the letter when they send you the debit card? Anyway I have learnt somewhere that if you use your debit card, it is riskier then using your credit card because if it is a fraud, you can block the payment but not so if you use a debit card. I myself can afford a debit card only so I advise you to be extra cautious when you use your debit card.

I also can't afford credit card as I am just a student without any income. But the debit card and the pin envelop were both handed to me by the worker at the time of opening the account. The envelop just have some general instructions of using the card and there is no info about activating. In my country, the Card is usually activated by bank itself and we can just start using it.
