He really doesn't like it, AT ALL

Yesterday my husband filled up our long wading pool for the kids. It was over 90 out. It was certainly a good time to do so. My daughter got her suit on an hour early in anticipation. We put a swim diaper on my 18 month old son. We thought he'd like it as much as his sister did at that age. She loves water. Well he proved us wrong! He started screaming and crying immediately. My husband lifted him out, I took pictures none the less. What was your kids 1st reaction to a pool?

Was the water straight cold or did you warm it up a bit? How does your son react to a bath? Maybe the water was just too cold for him. Little ones tend to be more sensitive to cold.
I remember one time when my daughter was a baby, she had to have an ultrasound of her heart done and they wanted her asleep when they did it. Before our appointment she wanted to go to sleep and I had to keep her awake so I took off her little shirt and laid her on the cold cement floor. She did not like it at all. I'm so mean! But she did sleep through the procedure. :)
You might try making the water a little warm just at first. The difference in temperature between the air and the water makes a big difference. :)
My daughter was always a water baby but she was older when she started going into the colder water of a pool or the beach.

I don't remember my nephew or niece getting upset with cold water, because probably they never use the pool during the cold days, it's always during the hot summer, they just couldn't wait when ever the pool is set and ready

My little ones prefer to play with the hose.. so that's what I let them do. They never liked being in the pool, but they'd spray the other's with the hose. They aren't too fond of being splashed with it themselves though. Aydan was the cutest, he'd take drinks from the hose and splash the water all over his face.. at first I'd worry he'd get upset by it, but since he did it to himself he didn't seem to mind. We have a membership to the community pool this year.. though it doesn't open until the end of the month. We'll see how well they do with that. Last year we only went once or twice and it took them a long time to warm up to the idea of being in a foot of water.

I'm thinking if we put him in with Emma more often, he may warm up to the idea. I think waiting until he is older may be a better idea with the hose. Next year maybe when he is a bit taller.

I let Aydan play with the hose when he was about a year. Mathieu was probably a little younger. Of course we don't have a hose hook up here so they were not able to play with one last year, but we have let them play with one at my father in law's house already this year.

I think this is his first time in so big pool ,just not in the bathtub ,He must be afraid of that ,
So as my daughter last year ,we anticipated her loving in a very big swimming pool ,but we failed ,So we had to spend a lot of time to let her feel suitable and all the efforts were not ok for her ,but she will be better the next time .

I am glad your daughter enjoyed the water in the wading pool your husband filled up. Your toddler son got upset because it is a totally different experience to usual life. I am sure once he gets a bit older he will like the wading pool.
My toddler son was just for months old when his dad dipped him into the sea water in Portugal. My son screamed and hated that experience. At a public swimming pool he sits in a swim seat. He is disabled and his feet are deformed. My older son has always loved being in water. My daughter is almost a year old and she is scared of the water.

My kids have never been in a pool before. But all of them as infants have been terrified of getting into the tub to take a bath. They all would scream and holler like crazy! My youngest daughter is coming out of her shell. So, she is not as scared as she used to be. They all was terrified of getting into the water. So, I always put Dora The Explorer Bubble Bath in the tub. My youngest daughter watches while the water turns to suds. I am sorry that your son did not really enjoy getting into the swimming pool. I am glad that your daughter enjoyed it.

lol...my daughter loved the bath. I used to take her into the bath with me when I bathed and it just gradually became something she did in the little tubby.

The first time that I took my daughter in the water, she really didn't like it at all. She was six months old at the time and I attribute a lot of the fact that she didn't like the water to the fact that it was early in June and the water hadn't had an opportunity to warm up because ever since that summer she has loved the water.
Now, my son was just a couple months older the first time that we took him in a pool and he absolutely loved it. Now, he is three years old, in swimming lessons for the first time, and is swimming really well for his age.
Overall, I would say that both of my children are true water babies.

Hello ersmommy,
We don't have a pool in our area, but sometimes my sister-in-law would bring along my kids to a friend's pool. During their first exposure, according to my in-law they were so excited to swim and they want to stay long in the pool. They enjoyed staying in the water especially so that the weather was so hot. Maybe, for the case of your son, he might not be ready or not in good mood to be in a pool yet. My kids were aged 4 and five when they had their first experience.

My oldest loves the pool. My middle won't go in it other than to wade in the lil pool and use various squirt toys outside of the pool. My youngest liked the pool last year but I haven't gotten in yet to try it out (or find my suit for that matter)to see what he thinks of it. He hates being wet or having dirty clothes... but yet won't sit in the pool or take a bath w/o a fuss. *sigh* I'm hoping though I got this lil life jacket like thing @ a rummage hoping that will encourage my 2nd to get into the pool and build up her confidence in being in the water besides the bath tub!

I'm sorry to hear that was he scared. Sometimes kids get scared of that sort of thing. You should keep trying though we should never let our fear win out or keep us down. Maybe it'll be better next time.

Hello ersmommy,
I remember this first time my youngest nephew and niece did swim in the wading pool, they were happy about it and that was before they moved to a new house. later few months ago, my elder nephew and niece bought they're own version of wading pool, which is a lot bigger, trouble is that it added to our water expenses, which is infuriating.because it increased our water expenses and made them a little bit dark in they're skin

My daughter loved it!! I used to take her at maybe 5-6 months - to the apartment pool when it got shady in a particular corner . . . she'd sit with me and she'd be kicking the water forever!! I can't remember when she actually went in the pool, but I know we put her in a ring and she'd "swim" with us. At the time there was also a warm jacuzzi and she absolutely loved being in that! We're at a different place now, but at 5, she still loves to pool and swimming with dad especially (I don't swim too well). Now we have a son - and at 7 months he is loving to kick the water just as his older sister did. He is definitely a splasher in the tub - so we're not surprised he likes it in the pool too!!
