Florescent light bulbs

I thought these compact florescent bulbs were supposed to last longer (like years)than regular ones? One of the bulbs in the ceiling fan in the kitchen has been crackling all night like it is going to blow. They have only been in there for about 6 months. Do you use them? Do you think they actually last longer than regular bulbs?

Yes, I use them, and I've yet to have one blow on me. Most of them have been in for over a year now. In our old place we were blowing light bulbs every month, that's when I started using them, and they definitely worked better. You might have an electrical problem there at your ceiling fan which is making the bulb go.

I understand your consternation. The first time I bought and used them I thought how great it was going to be that they would last longer and save me money on my electric bill. They didn't last as long as the regular light bulbs! So I thought it was just the store I got them at, or the brand. So I tried a different store, and a different brand. Same result. So I'm really not sure about it now since I've had such bad luck with them.

My brother said when he bought the 100 watt equivalent ones they burned out, but the lower watt ones worked fine for him.

I have not used them but like you I was lead to believe that they last for years! Not just six months!

My husband also used to think that they last longer than regular bulbs. It seems though that there always seems to be a fluorescent bulb going out in our downstairs wreck room. I'm thinking it may be from our son constantly flicking the lights on and off.
