I have just finished reading my 8th Martina Cole novel. She writes crime thrillers that seem to come to life.
I think she is a great writer as from the 1st chapter you are hooked and her books are difficult to put down. Her style of writing nad description of characters actually finds one wanting to kill them as they are so believably evil. And at the same time sympathising with the less fortunate characters.
Has anyone else read any Martina Cole books and if so how did you find her style of writing?
Do you have a favourite author or authoress?

I forgot her first name but her last name is Cooney. (or so i think it's spelled) She wrote a book called The Face On The Milk Carton and other books. That book had a very bad and unsatisfying ending, but the rest of the book is very interesting. Actually, it's a ...i forgot the word. Ya know, when a book doesn't end, and you have to get the next book to find out the ending. Well this story is about 3 or 4 books. I read all of them which means they really held my attention! Like i said, the ending was awful. But she's a great writer!

My daughter loved the book, Face on the Milk Carton as well. I think that is what got her into loving to read as a matter of fact. So thankful for that book because I value reading more than anything. It spurs on the imagination and draws you into a world that isn't your own.

ddhawkins63, glad your daughter liked it. I could see how that book could get somebody into reading. The author does magic with words. I've never seen anybody write like that. When she describes something, you really see it, so it really does get you into a world that is not your own, as you say.
LeighB-oh did you read it too? Too bad she didn't take the time to think of a better ending after all that!

I have so many really.
I do tend to love more 'classic' type books, but I think that my favourite ever authoress is Daphne Du Maurier, and Rebecca is undoubtedly Du Mauriers' most famous novel - and my favourite.
I also love the work of the Brontes' (especially Wuthering Heights'), DH Lawrence, Thomas Hardy and I love the works of Susan Hill - a modern wrier who feels gothic and rather Victorian in her writings.
I also like thrillers - oh let's face it I just love reading!!

Wuthering Heights is also one of my favorites! Good choices. So glad that you shared. I think one of my least favorite classics as The Scarlett Letter. One of my favorites is Crime and Punishment. It really grasps the feeling of guilt that someone has to deal with when they commit a crime such as murder and has to carry it around with them. Another favorite author of mine is Mark Twain. His style of writing makes you feel as though he is sitting in the room talking to you about his adventures. Huckleberry Finn is just a fun book to read no matter what age you are.

My favorite author is Charlaine Harris. Her novels are full of mystery, action, romance, and some of her series have supernatural characters. The main characters in her novels are strong women who are very entertaining and interesting. The supporting characters are also very entertaining and interesting. I just can't get enough of her novels, especially the Sookie Stackhouse series. I'm currently reading the Lily Bard series.

I like the books of Robert John Maxwell, Jim Dornan, Peter Lynch, but what I like the most is Robert Kiyosaki. His books are exceptional. He writes based on his experience, and he is highly controversial. I like authors that are highly controversial. He became controversial when he wrote "If you want to be rich and be happy, don't go to school", and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad---What the rich teach their kids about money that the poor and the middle class do not".

I like John Jakes books about the American Civil war and American history in general. He is a very go author who portrays life in the history of Americans very accurately. He has studied history so well that the scenes in his book are amazingly on target and very intrigueing.

Hin sender, yeah I have read many a Stephen King book and a few by Daniele Steele. They are both good authors in their own right. I think a lot of people miss out on reading Stephen King novels as so many of them have been made into movies. like most movies, nothing beats the book.
As you say reading is an escapism into a world of fantasy and dreams, that allows your imagination to build up a picture of the characters, landscape and setting.

I tried to read Grapes of Wrath in the 1980s but it was such a hard slog!! Of Mice and Men is an excellent Steinbeck book though.

Stephen King is in my top 5 too.
The Grapes of Wrath was by John Steinbeck, and is a book often favoured as a reading course books in schools.
Farewell to Arms was a book by Earnest Hemmingway, all 3 authors are well respected as great authors of their time.

I love authors of sci fi/fantasy books. My favorite authors are J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis, and Sherrilyn Kenyon. I also like Clive Cussler. He writes action/adventure books. I am also partial to William Shakespeare. Most people don't understand why, but he is a wonderful writer.

I like reading the classics. My favorite authors are Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy. I have read many of their novels many times too, and I just enjoy them every time too. David Copperfield and Anna Karinina are my choices again.

Yes I do have a favourite author: Charles Dickens. He has that extraordinary ability to use such rich language to describe his characters, his storylines are riveting and he combines humour with pathos that can rarely be seen these days. I wonder what other people think?

Hi ianluton, thanks for your response, I totally agree that Dickens uses such rich language and his books are still as popular today as they always have been. Most probably the greatest British author of his time. Far more articulate in his writings than Shakespeare could ever be.

Well, I have several, actually. I used to always think that Agatha Christie was my favorite, but lately I have been more into a more modern American thriller writer called Harlan Coben. If you are into thrillers and mysteries I highly recommend his books!
I have read around ten of his books in the last couple of months!
