What do you do with old clothes?

We all have to clean out our closest eventually! I find myself doing it more and more these days because on average I have moved once a year over the past 5 years! So for each move, I try to lessen my stash of clothes. I usually move anything out that I did not wear in the past year. Once I've cleaned out my closet, I try to sell the clothes that I want to get rid of , in a lot, on Craigslist. I usually put all of the clothes in a box and ask like $25-$40 for the whole box of clothes. All of course depending on how much and what was included. I've had great success doing it this way! How often do you clean out your closest? And what do you do with the clothes that you have cleaned out and no longer want/wear?

I usually go through my closets and draws twice a year cleaning out stuff that I know I will not wear again. I then give it to different charities that come by the house picking up for the poor.

Hello there. it's better if you covered old clothes with plastic so that it wouldn't be that much of a mess once you have kept them in the closet.or give it to the poor and homeless when ever they are around, am sure they will appreciate new clothes. but of course, that old clothes have to be well kept and clean not too messsy

My clothes in the draws and closets that I choose to give away are washed and folded into a bag before giving away.

Hi not the least: Yes, I think it's a good way to help people that really need the things that we don't use anymore. In my case I do this everytime that something special happends in my life, for example it's near my graduation and I'm looking for the things I don't use anymore to renew my closet. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO

That is such a nice feeling when you finally get your closet cleaned out. It's just a task doing it though. I usually go through all of our clothes in the spring and fall. I keep clothes in a tote bin in the attic. One for spring/summer and the other for fall/winter. So each time I'm ready to put a bin away I'll decide what I am going to get rid of. I will try to sell some things on Craigslist first. After that the clothes get donated to Purple Heart or the Salvation Army.

Ahh, good question. It's a good idea for you to put your clothes on Craigslist! I hadn't thought of that. I've made "lots" on eBay for clothes (usually in bigger quantities), although it actually seems like more work than it's worth if you ask me - taking pictures, writing descriptions, shipping, etc. What I've been doing is bringing almost all of my clothes to consignment shops - where they pay me after they've sold (and if they don't sell, I can pick them up). A lot of my clothes are not high end, but OK brand names - so it seems to work out for me.

Jennlk84, Well, we used to hide our old clothes most specially the ones we actually no longer use inthe wardrobe/closet. of course, from time to time when ever we have relatives in our place, we would give them our old clothes as a parting gift or so that they won't have to buy any more. we rarely clean our closet unless there are termites there that turned flying creeps

Hi Jenn lk: I don't clean my closet very often but my brother has told me a lot of times that I have to do this and I guess he's right. But when I have chosen my clothes I gave the things that I don't use anymore to the poor. Thanks for asking us this question. Have a nice day. ALVARO

If I cannot find anyone to fit them or no one asks if I want it anymore, I will take it down to our local Value Village (that is our local thrift store) and donate it to them. They then sell clothes to the poor people or bargain shoppers who do not mind that the clothes are a little outdated. I am not good at garbage sales and usually when we have stuff that we do not need it is either give it to someone, or throw it away.

I have to admit,I should probably do a clearout of my clothing more often..The thing is,I don't buy a lot of clothing to start with, and have received various items as gifts over time..if the item had become worn out or damaged,I'd dump it,and if it would be dated and/or still servicable I'd probably either donate it to a charity shop,or to one of the door to door collection groups that will put a bag in the mail box...

First I try to find someone who is needy of the clothing i no longer need. If i can't I will put the clothing in a yard sale. I also like to give clothing donations to places like the Salvation Army.

That is the biggest problem. No one accepts 'hand me downs'these days unlike in olden times when it was more a rule than an exception. Some NGO here commented to me saying 'who will wear your modern clothes - certainly not the poor'. It is definitely a problem but what I do now is to tear it apart and use them as swabs or just burn them in the incinerator.

Honestly I don't usually clean out the closet but when we moved to another house I just segregated the clothes that I am not using into another cabinet but then I am still expecting that I can still wear it that is why there are clothes that I don't really give it right away to others. But there are some clothes that I am giving it to my cousin it is either not fit to me anymore or I don't want to wear it anymore. I haven't tried selling my clothes since I find it hard to do so like if there is anyone that could be interested to have an old clothes. Some of my old clothes were donated already when they asked for it.

I designate my old clothes from the ones I can sell, ones I will give out to charity, ones my friends or relatives would like to the ones I can still make something out from...The last part is my favorite coz then I could make my own fashion or even make a bag or what not from it and let the artistic juices flow....try www.threadbanger.com that is if you have time to do all of this =)

We always have clothes we don't use a few times a year. Especially with having 3 kids who are growing up fast and the way kids grow out of their clothes, yeah, there are always clothes we don't need anymore. I either sell them for cheap at yard sales or give them to a church nearby who gives clothes or food away to people who need them. It feels really good doing that and teaches the kids to help others in need.

I usually wear my clothes until they are nothing but rags then I throw them away. If they get stains I toss them I wont wear clothes that are stained. A lot of my clothes get stained. I had been using max whites a pretreater spray for laundry but they stopped making it and now I cant find anything that takes the stains out. I have well water and its hard water so none of the stains come out. If I add bleach to the water it turns the water dark brown and then the clothes come out even more stained up then before. My sister does ery similar to what you do. She boxes up clothes and a few people she knows comes over and look through them and buys what she has for sale for a lump price for the whole box. Anything that I do have thats in nice shape but I just simply dont want anymore I put in my yard sale.

I think men tend to wear clothes longer than women. I know my husband can keep clothes much longer than I do!

Well my old clothes go through a lot. First I put aside all the clothes that I don't want anymore. Some of the clothes that I used to go out with, turns into home clothes. Then my mom looks through the pile that I ignored, and she chooses from that pile. After that, she gives the pile again to our helpers.

I usually clean out my closet every 6 months or so, because for some reason my clothes either fade too fast, or shrink, or get eaten by moths! The clothes that aren't completely ruined, and are good enough to be worn, I usually donate to charity, because there isn't really the option to sell my clothes by the box. I wish there was though, at the rate at which I clean out my closet, I could stand to make a lot of money! ;) But still, giving my clothes away is one of the most satisfying things I've done in my life, and it feels good knowing that there are people wearing good clothes out there. :)

I usually clean up my closet twice a year, especially if I'll be going out of the country so I can buy new ones. My clothes just consists of blouses and pants, usually I still wear them till 5-6 years ;). I only remove those that don't fit me anymore and those really old enough to be made into pajamas already. For clothes that are still decent and wearable, I do give them away to charities and those that are much expensive, I usually ask close friends if they want it.
