I´m a jealous person. I am envious at all of you who are in Spring, the sun shining and a spade in your hands caresing Mother Earth. I am cold and the only thing I can do towards my next seasons veggies is to make a compost pile. I planted some parsley seeds in a pot, thinking that if I put it in a sunny AND covered spot it would grow, but all I see is soil. The seeds are sleeping. Share with me your work at your garden. I´m thinking of making raised beds but I think I´ll have t wait until this cold season is over. Are you a gardener? How much time do you dedicate to it?

I have put 10 bags o0f top soil in the holes my grand dogs dug in my yard. I have thought about sticking me some tomato plants in there but it was so stinky out there i was afraid the plants would stink to. Can that happen??? hugs.

No, it wont happen. But do put some wiring around the plants. I had to part my garden with Lola. She wanted to destroy all my house. And do place a watermelon seed near some of the tomatoes. Watermelons don´t have big roots, you can make them climb over that little fence I was talking to you about and to have tomatoes AND watermelons wiould be a wonder.

Hi jo, I´m sorry about that heat. I wouldn´t mind it, but I know most people do. You should think of throwing (not planting if you don´t know how) some watermelon seeds in a sunny patch. Watermelons are hardy and I know you love tham. How would that be? They do need water though. Last year I didn´t get much crops because I forgot to water my plants. It was when I was taking care of my mom. I came here and instead of picking up the hose Id run to the computer. A big hug!

I love to grow vegetables although I don't have nearly enough room to grow everything I'd like to. I have three tomato plants, 4 short rows for dried beans, a longer row for green beans, a few beets, 4 cabbage plants, one each of four kinds of squash, some onions here and there and some lettuce. I don't spend that much time with it right now, but it's all pretty much started and growing. I need to get out and hoe the beans - forgot, I have some potatoes in pots and a volunteer potato growing with the beets. I need to hoe those up and thin the lettuce. I'll probably do that tomorrow morning if I get up before it gets too hot. (I'm a wimp; anything over 80 degrees is too hot to work outside for me)

From what you tell me, that sounds about the size of vegetable garden I´ll have next spring. My sister sent me a link by the BBC that teaches how to make raised beds. That way you can use a small plot to the maximum. Im planing on having some potatoes in sacks. I did that two years ago as an experiment (just one sack) and had the pleasure of eating my own potatoes. We should trade houses: it´s cold here although it doesn´t snow. The coldest it gets is about 0º C (temperature of freezing water). I love sun and love it hot!!!

I have a couple of raised beds and they do very well. I've never tried potatoes in sacks, but have been hearing more about it lately. I may try it next year if I'm still here. It gets cold here in the winter and it snows... I love the snow! :) I like the four seasons, but I'd rather it didn't get so hot.

I've had a vegetable garden every year for a very long time now. We moved to this house three years ago and I finally have, for the first time, enough room to grow everything I've always wanted. For 55 years of my life, I never had a very large area for a garden. Now, I have about two acres that are available. (We have 3 1/2 acres but part of that is wooded.) I've been planting fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, grape and kiwi vines every year. I have a huge strawberry patch that is growing by leaps and bounds. I'm getting cherries for the first time this year and peaches for the second year in a row. I also have a fairly large herb garden. I'm not able to spend as much time outside as I would like to because I have fibromyalgia and that prevents me from doing anything more than a few minutes at a time. I have to take frequent breaks and occasional naps. If I could, I'd probably spend most of every day outside working my garden. But, the work I do out there, even though it hurts, is well worth it when harvest time rolls around. I've already harvested my strawberries. I probably picked a couple of pints of them every day for about 3 weeks straight. (Not many went into the freezer. I LOVE strawberries. LOL) But, just so you don't feel too bad, we just ended the most horrible winter I've ever lived through, and I've lived through 58 winters! We got over 8 feet of snow last winter when we normally get less than one foot. I was so worried that it would kill some of the berry bushes and fruit trees I planted but, luckily, everything came through all that snow just fine with the exception of one tree. It did suffer some burning from the horrible conditions but it's still producing a lot of peaches and they look really yummy!

Thank you, marguicha. I am a happy person. Gardening has always made me happy. I've considered it "therapy" in times of stress and it always makes me feel better, no matter what is going on. I do feel better even when I just get out to garden for a few minutes. Sometimes, the pain flares bad and I don't feel like doing anything but, if I go outside, even just to look at my garden, I always feel better afterwards. I've been thinking of planting some apricot trees myself. I might get to them one day. Right now, I have more than enough to keep me busy. LOL Oh, those birds can be quite pesky! I've tied small pie (tart) tins to my fruit trees. They're on a string a few inches long so they flutter around in the wind. It seems to be helping to keep the birds away. Also, if your daughter makes a spray of hot pepper water and sprays it on her trees, the birds won't be so much of a problem. Once they get a taste of that pepper spray, they stay far away! You can spray it right on the fruit, too. As long as the fruit doesn't have any holes in it (like from bugs), they can be washed off and be good as new. If all else fails, plastic bird netting is pretty foolproof. I already have some netting but haven't had to use it... yet. Happy gardening! I hope the time passes quickly for you and gardening time rolls around soon.

I am cold too marguicha! It is winter time here in Australia and I hate not having any sun! I feel so depressed during the dark winter months! I am not a gardener I’m afraid. I do enjoy a nice garden but I am not one to get in there and get my hands dirty! I would love to have an herb garden or something simple like that. I would like to plant low maintenance stuff that doesn’t require much work and is very hardy because I have been known to kill a plant or two!

We are having one of those cold suns today so I am washing clothes to see if the sun helps me some. I don´t like dryers and the clothes will last little. Couldnt you grow some herbs in containers? I love having my own orageno for just about everything! Its a hardy perennieal and you can cut and dry the leaves for pizza toppings and salad dressings. Take care!

I am not a gardener... yet. But I should become one, because I have a garden I am not using properly. But so far I just have not had the time to work on it as much as I would want. So I need to get started! The problem is that I have no experience at all in gardening, so it is so hard to figure out where one should start...

I told my sister that I wanted to start a vegetable garden and she sent me this link to learn. It is a site made by the BBC http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/ I hope it helps you. I found it awesome. Luck!

I dunno I spend probably an hour a day putzing between all the flower beds and the garden. There's always something here to be watered, pruned, weeded, or deadheaded. Sometimes the kids will help out too but not in every instance. But you know I feel the same way about winters here too, it seems like forever and the bug really hits in Jan/Feb when I want to start plotting and getting ideas for the upcoming seasons garden.

I am a gardener, but I do a lot of gardening inside, as pests are attracted outside. I dot hem in pots and I keep a lot of other plants inside as they are great for my health. You should use them to! They are great for your health. Here are 3 great plants to keep inside your home! http://gomestic.com/gardening/three-best-plants-to-keep-inside/
