Giving Up A Good Thing...

Giving up your comfort foods can be extremely difficult, like giving up smoking, drinking, and your best friend. There are times when it’s all you can think about and no matter what else you eat, you still crave it. This is what I’ve been going through for about the last 2 months. Two months ago my doctor put me on a low-carb eating plan. Actually pretty much a no-carb eating plan. No bread, no pasta, no potatoes, and no rice, also no baked goods. It’s because she’s trying to get my sugar levels under control but I never thought it would be so hard. I never realized how much of my eating including those foods.
There’s days when I just want to say the heck with it and throw myself into a big pot of macaroni and cheese…my ultimate favorite food…but then I think of the consequences…insulin injections. Several ppl I’ve talked to about it have said that they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) do it. I don’t have much of a choice. I figure its payback for all the years I ate so terribly.
Could you go without your favorite food? What would be hardest for you to give up? If your life depended on giving it up, would you?

If it was a matter of health, I could give up whatever was necessary.
The hardest to give up, for me would be dark chocolate. I don't eat much bread, if at all.
Instead of spending time focusing on how much I missed the carbs etc, I would indulge in information that would help me eat better.
Just for your information, there are some seriously delicious recipes for diabetics.
Check this one out for example:
DLife
http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/diabetic-recipes/
It helps to experiment with different herbs and spices to make your meals more appealing to your palate.
Drink plenty of water and exercise, even if just a brisk walk around the block.
Get some sugarless candies or simply licorice root to chew/suck on during your walk which may help keep you motivated until you get yourself into a routine.
Your cravings for the mac and cheese won't last forever if you just take the lead in changing your lifestyle and eating habits.
Make it a choice, for the health of it.
Within a couple months you will be feeling better about the change.
My problem isn't diabetes or otherwise, but is a matter of loosing weight. i took myself off all refined carbs, anything with flour, I don't eat sugar but i still eat a good quality dark chocolate daily.
I have lost weight.
Sometimes I waver from my restricted diet f=but I don't beat myself up about it. I just pick myself up and carry on.
Think long term but set small obtainable goals, even if just by the day or even the hour.
Within no time your body and mind will adjust.

I tried the Atkins diet several years ago and lost 40 pounds in less than a year on that. The first few days were very hard, but it got easier after that. Back then it was the craze and grocery stores had tons of low carb foods to use. Now that it sort of out of style for the most of us they are hard to find. But try Atkins.com and you will find recipes and products that are plentiful.

I quit smoking after over 50 years. Three years later I still crave for a ciggy and I know I can´t indulge in one because I´d be back to round one again. Addictions are difficult to cope with and unfoetunatly many people are not aware of how difficult it is on a day to day thing.
I hope you can manage. I could do it but I had a miserable time for some months. THe first months are the worst. I bet that quitting smoking is as bad as quitting any other thing you are addicted to. I hope you can do it. You have a strong motive.
I helped myself placing in a piggy bank the money I saved by not smoking. Could you do something like that with, let´s say, your savings on baked goods? Then you can treat yourself to something you like (not food, of course). For me it was a trip. You can really save by not smoking and I´m sure that you can save a lot too if you don´t overeat.
Take care!

I agree giving up carbs is very difficult! There are things we can do w/o and there are things we can't get enough of. Like you I thinking giving up carbs 100% would kill me. And I think giving up anything that contains chocolate would definatly break me.
One of my SIL's and Mother did not want to give up those things. My Mother always thought it would make her life much shorter and being as unhappy as she was she did as she pleased when it came to eating. My SIL is in denial of even having it.

Hi. twoey68. Yes, I would give up my favorite food if it meant saving my health and my life. I love Banquet's Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings. They are very delicious. When I eat one of them, I can't stop myself from eating another one. They are so tempting and delicious. It has no Trans Fat in them, but I know that I will have to give these yummy chickens up because it has grease in it. You are doing the right thing by sacrificing a food that you really love, not many people are able to stick it out, like you have. Take care.

Hello twoey
Well, i managed to cut back on almost all those bad foods, and eat all in moderation with the moderation of chocolate, which as an addiction, has eluded stop so far, but i will put that on hold really soon as well, i am really determined on cutting back on food, and loosing at least 10kg by next summer - an achievable goal i hope.

My parents are diabetics and also my best friend who has to wear an insulin pump she says she has a hard time dealing with the no carbohydrates thing too. I love carbohydrates, they are a weakness of mine and the main reason I can't keep my weight off after losing it. One food I don't think I would want to do without is probably spaghetti with meat sauce or Pizza. both are so bad for us and full of carbs.

I can sympathise with you because I went on a sugar and grain free diet about 10 years ago and it was for about 12 months altogether. I had trouble metabolising sugar and it would make me quite ill at times. I soon got used to the diet, even though it was extremely difficult at first, and now, I do eat a few grains and carbs now and again, but have lost my addiction to them and feel much healthier for my efforts. So it's well worth committing to the diet, as the mind and body can get used to anything. Good luck with your diet and I hope you health soon improves. _Derek

Try going without dairy food (milk protein) for 3 months. If you eat prepared foods, it is in everything. Not do mention doing without cheese!

I am a big pasta eater myself, and love my potatoes, so I am sure it would be hard. I am a diet coke drinker, and am trying to cut down on that right now and that is hard enough. I was off caffeine for a year when I tried to get and was pregnant, so I can do it, but wow, just starting to cut down is the pits! I think it gets to be such a habit for us all that we can't function without it at first. Good luck to you. And i agree, better than insulin shots for sure!!!!

Your situation reminds me of my good friend's mother. She, the mother, is on dialysis and has an extremely limited diet. Despite this, many times, she eats whatever she wants. She is always in extreme pain and the doctors feel she is going to die very soon. However, for many years, she had the chance to change things before they got too late through diet and lifestyle changes but she didn't want to. Please learn from her mistakes.
As for me, I think it would very hard. I ate whatever I want. I don't have money for the gym, so right now I'm not worried about maintaing my weight. However, if my health depended on it, I would try really hard, even still try to be good even if I make a mistake or two. I don't want to be on dialysis.

Oh yes, carbs. That would be my biggest love in the good realm. Pasta and bread are my weaknesses. I've cut back on them, although I really should cut back on them more. I'm in no danger for diabetes, but that doesn't mean they aren't a negative influence on my health anyway. I feel for you. But you can do it! I know it is easy for me to say because I'm not on a strict no carb diet. But my sister did it, and she isn't even diabetic now. I didn't think one could actually get rid of type II diabetes. But she did. And she feels so much better. Not to mention she looks darn good.

Hi twoey, it is so difficult to stick to strict food regime when we are so used to the comfort foods which has been with us for the whole of our life. But I guess our bodies are not made to last forever and we have to listen to the experts if we want a further lease of our earthly existence. Time to payback after all the years of used and abused on our bodies. Old age diseases are now starting to lick on the aging body and we have no choice but to deprive ourselves all the foods that we are so used to eating. Rice is something that I can't go without and I have to reduce my carbohydrate intake according to my doctor. Well, that is part of the sacrifices that we should take to be well and live the balance of our life on earth pain free.

It would be so hard to give up my comfort foods, in which I need to right now, I've been on a diet for awhile, but I still eat what I want, I just eat less and I exercise ALOT, so it burns the calories, and at first I was losing weight steadily but now I'm at a standstill. I haven't lost any more weight and I haven't gained any either. So I'm thinking I could do alot better on my eating habits, and start losing it again. I still have 30 lbs to lose, but I need to cut out all the carbs, and that would be hard to do.

Comfort Food is indeed hard to give up. I tried different styles of dieting and I always failed. It's very frustrating and sad. I tried to cut down rice, sweets but sometimes when I feel so down. I cant help but take sweets. It's my energy booster.
So, recently I've been drinking this slimming coffee. Hoping it would help me to lose weight. It's almost a week and I would still eat but not so much. I'm not sure thought if it worked but I feel a little lighter than before.
It's hard to give up Pasta, Pizza and of course French Fries from McDonalds.
haha I'm guilty. They say you just have to be determined to lose weight.
Not when you crave once in a while.
