Why do some people have an irrational fear or dislike of cats?

I recently visited my parents who live in Arkansas (I live in California) and while I was home I visited some friends. One of my friends and I hadn't spoken for several years and so we met one evening to catch up. That means we inevitably talked about my cats. And I found out something about him that I never knew. He has an irrational fear of cats. He hates them, calls them evil and doesn't want his family to have any. He never had any growing up but doesn't have any bad history with them either, I mean its not like one scratched or bit him in the past. So I wondered why some people (especially guys) have an irrational fear of cats. And why is it acceptable in society, if you say I don't like cats, most people won't even look at you twice, unless they happen to be cat lovers. But heaven help you if you say you don't like dogs, then everyone looks at you like you are a psycho. So why the double standard and why do some people just hate cats?

The reason why some people dislike cats is unknown. Some people hear things about them, such as they are 'protectors of the underworld, or something like that. Most times people are afraid of anything doing with "evil" and often aren't swayed. It is for this reason they fear them.
Dogs have become more of a public icon as far as animals go. Cats are the second-most popular, but don't always have the same rights as dogs. Cats are rarely used in television, movies, or any other show.s. Most that do use cats are often potrayed as evil, pets used only by witches. Rarely do you see them playing a supporting role. Or used equeally.
An example of this would be both homward bound movies. One cat, two dogs.
I think disney made maybe two cat movies. I can't be certain. But if you look at the past vs today cats often take a back seat to dogs when it comes to stuff. Therefore when someone dislikes this is an accepted fact since they potray them so poorly.
Dogs on the other hand are idolized. This changes people's prospective a lot. Thus the double stands and hyprociticy.

I see what you mean, dogs get more of the good press. Did you know more cats are owned as pets then dogs, but there are more dog owning families, the reason more cats are owned is that cat owners are more likely to own more than one (like me, I have three). There was one cat movie by Disney, Aristocats, the other animal films have mixed cats and dogs like Oliver and Company. And in Lady and The Tramp the cats are the bad guys.

I have cats because I think dogs are too needy and well cats are so cute, entertaining and loving. My thought has always been a dog will love you just because but if you win the affection of a cat well then that is something. I also work quite a bit and my cats are easy to leave all day (although they would prefer I be home).

When I worked I always had cats because they could be left on their own without any problems. Dogs are so much more work! Now I no longer work and I still have cats because I live in a trailer park that charges an extra $20 per month in lot rent for each dog and I can't afford that. Besides, I can't really walk a dog anymore with my disabilities...cats are a perfect fit for me.

I've discovered that people that don't like cats, also frequently don't like other people that they can't control. Oh, its fine for friends, but become really controlling with their spouses and kids.
And if there is anything cat's are known for, its their independent ways.
Not that its all that true, but that's what they are known for.
Now, my neighbor across the street - not the crazy lady who is now gone - is afraid of ALL animals, dogs, cats, lizards.
Still strange to me, but I had snakes...

I am not a big fan of amphibians and reptiles, I personally like things with fur. But I also know a girl who is afraid of all animals because of the control issue. They move and startle her, I supposed she has never been around animals much. And those people I can forgive. Its the one who just think cats are evil because that bug me.

I have watched people for years, I'm more likely to watch people than interact first and I've really noticed that people that hate/fear cats are controlling people. People that hate/fear all animals are just afraid.
My roomie's brother hates me because I'll tell him what an a$$ he is, tell her dad too...

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there, elic. My dad hated cats so much he claimed to be allergic to justify his aversion. At the same time he could never talk to us like human beings. He always had to be in control of any talk we had and if we started exerting our own personalities, he would throw in a stupid play on words joke to throw us off balance and prove how "smart" he was. He basically alienated me completely and even when I went home to reconcile with him, he still could not bring himself to discuss our differences with me like one adult to another. It was sad because I knew he was dying at the time and sincerely wanted to heal our relationship before he did. But he wouldn't have any of it.

Personally, I think it's their claws for one and maybe the other could be from a bite. But then again, cats are like people, there are so many of them with different personalities. My neighbor has a cat that just does not like anybody. And will scratch you too, in a heart beat.

Actually there isn't way understand. I'm a person who particularly prefer dogs, but I don't have problem with cats, they're also adorable animals. It's like you set, seems to be something irrational, there isn't explanation.

Hello cleverson99
Me as well, I prefer dogs than cats, but cats are adorable to me as well, I always stay at the pet shop and happily look at those cats inside the cage, but I just won't buy one for myself, I have a pug and maybe that's why I don't think I would buy a cat at this moment.
When I was small, I hate animals and found they are quite wild and would hurt me, after I met my pug I changed a lot. As for the cats, when I was small, I felt fear when I saw their paws, it seemed like their nails would cut me.

Parents usually prevent their children to touch a cat, mainly because of health concern...
Parents said "Cats are dangerous animal, don't touch them"...
Children will believe what they are told by their parents...
Everytime the children hear or see or watch bad things caused bt a cat, their believe are growing deeper and deeper...
It's carved in their subconscious mind...
and the fear remain strong in their adulthood...
When we ask, "Why you are so scared? it's just a cat!"
some of them don't even know why...
it's just personal believe.

i'd never figured that one out myself.
sometimes it's due to the parents' superstitions tho.
look at all the poor black cats most shelters have at any given time.
last to be adopted, the poor things.
i don't hate dogs, but i prefer cats..tho i still get the evil eye from local "dog people" with whispers of "crazy cat lady"

I think it's because of the stigma that's been placed on cats many many years ago. You know, like the ones that say don't let a black cat cross in front of you and the other things people say. It's given cats a horrible name which isn't right at all. Another thing too, most men don't like cats but like my mom says, those who do like cats REALLY like them. It's mostly women who like cats. Hubby and I have 10 cats and we love each and every one of them. Some were rescues and some were strays and some we adopted ourselves but all are with us for a reason and what ever the reason is, they're here to stay. We will continue to do so as long as they keep coming to us. All of our 'babies' are fixed too.

Hello Aurone
When I was small, I didn't like animals, I think they would hurt me. I especially felt fear on the nails on the cats' paws, it seemed like they would cut me. Maybe, this is why I felt fear of them. My parents don't like cats, and my dad always tells me I'd better don't have a cat at home if I want to be pregnant.

Most of the time when my cats scratch me its because I have done something to them to deserve or they are scared. You do have to be careful about that cat scratch fever but like alaskanray said its rare, I have been scratch many, many times. You just have to learn how to handle cats and then usually you have no problems.

Hi alaskanray,
I understand your boss, it is because he has a dog at the first place, and he found it was the cat making all this accident happened.
I heard about that disease about how they can cause to pregnant women, however, just two weeks ago, I read from a newspaper that a article was telling us, the Toxoplasma gondii in the cat's waste would affect our women only after it places the litter box for more than a hour, I mean the article was telling if we keep the litter box very clear and tidy the waste almost immediately after the cat left it in the litter box.
It is indeed a fear of cats deep inside my heart, when I was small, I have watched a scar on a pretty girl's face, it seemed to be permanent, and since that moment I told myself, never touch cats if I don't know whether the cats like the stroke from others.

I gave a cat to my boss one time and the poor thing got frightened by their dog and scratched her granddaughter's face trying to get away. The woman freaked! She took her granddaughter to the emergency room, for heaven's sake, and called me to take the cat back. Some folks just have no sense about cats.
The only thing you need to worry about if you're pregnant is that you shouldn't clean the litter box. There is a disease that cats can carry that can cause birth defects in unborn babies. But as long as you're not cleaning the litter box, you can have cats during pregnancy, no problem.
I have a friend who can't have a cat anymore because she got cat scratch fever, which is a viral infection. Like herpes, it never goes away, just goes dormant and if she has a cat it can become active very easily. As long as you clean any scratches right away, though, this very rare disease need never be a threat.
I had a cat bite clear through my thumbnail one time and I can't count how many times I've been scratched over the years. I have enormous respect for my cats and their weapons and have learned growing up with cats to be careful with them...especially if they are strange cats that I don't know.
I love my cats, though, and love my work with the local stray and feral cats.

I am not really sure.it depends on a person.maybe s/he had a traumatic experience with cats.as for me,I love cats.I love animals in general.this may sound strange or a lot of people will condemn me,but I love pets more than babies.I see babies as lifetime responsibilities with a shaky outcome.I see pets as responsibilities with great outcome.

I know how you feel. I am not exactly dying to have children and people think that is weird especially when I say my cats are likely to be the only children I have. My family tries to convince me that I want kids but since the likelyhood that I will be married again is very low, I don't think kids are in my future and I am really just happy with my cats.

hello,Aurone
You say that you want to know that why some people have an irrational fear of cats. And,i notice that you stress the guys("especially guys").
I feel strange,you know?
Because the guys usually like cats in our place.
In other words, when i know someone likes cats,i will say the man may be guy.
Of course, that's not certain, but it shows the trend.
Back to your question,i know the friends who hate cats for she has FUR PHOBIA or just she doesn't like the eyes of cats.

I say especially guys because you hear about cat ladies but not cat men? And most of the people I have talked to that hate cats irrationally (and by that I mean they have no fur phobia, and no bad experience with cats they just hate them for no good reason) have been guys. And all my friends who have cats happen to be girls. So that is the trend I see. I am glad there are some guys out there who like cats as well. I have a friend who dislikes all animals because they startle her when they move.

I have some Mexican friends, and they tell me that is part of their culture. Cats are considered to be devils. You have one and certainly know that must be true at times! I have five, so.....ya, they can be wicked little creatures when they get into stuff. But they are soo cute and cuddly! Mine have broken a few things I really cherished when they were playing or fighting, so now I have things stored in boxes in closets until I can afford a china cabinet to put them in. A couple of things are too big, such as a pair of lamps that I will never be able to display. Eh, it's just stuff. I'd rather have the cats!
I know people who don't like them because they have allergies to them. One of my old neighbors used to shoot the strays in the neighborhood and I don't know why he hated cats so much. We were pretty overrun with strays though. Even so, that was just not very nice to do.

LOL...Any time I hear my daughter yell, "Oh, I could KILL them!!!!" I know our cats have gotten into her yarn again. They will bat at that ball until it is completely unraveled and the yarn is spread from front to back of my trailer and back again! I have to laugh because I'll calmly suggest that if she wants we can always get rid of them all and of course she says NO WAY. LOL Aren't they just wonderful pets?
You know what they say..."My dog thinks he's human; my cat thinks he's God!"

hmm, I didn't know there were cultures who didn't like them. I have three and they have never really broken anything of note. They actually have destroyed less items then my ex-husband did--he was terrible broke everything and he had no regard for my stuff or how much it would cost to replace the items he broke. Its funny that my cats were more house broken than him! I keep my yarn in a plastic tub so there is no chance of kitties in the yarn, because they do love that yarn. And I am allergic to cats and just choose to take medication and keep the cats. I love them so much. Shooting strays is terrible, I wish people wouldn't harm cats, cause sometimes the stray they are killing is someone's pet, it happened to my family, someone killed our outdoor kitties several years ago.

I was visiting a friend's house for a barbeque once and they kept their cats outdoors, never letting them in the house. The father of the family said, "Cats are unsanitary." I said, "They're a lot cleaner than dogs!" And he said, "That's not saying much."
As I pondered on our brief conversation, I came to realize that I should have said that neither are children...but we don't keep our children in the barn!
It is a trend in society to try and sterilize our environment. Farmers have a habit of not having pets...they have livestock, instead. The cats kill the vermin in the barn. The dogs help herd or guard the cattle. If it doesn't serve a utilitarian purpose, then the animal is useless and gone. My dad was a farmboy so when my mom had pets in the house, he was offended. It's all how you're raised, I think.

I have a friend right now who is pregnant and people are freaking out about her cleaning the litter box and some of her friends/family want her to get rid of the cat! She is livid about all the well meaning advice people are giving her about her cat. People just repeat those old wives tales and think they are helping.

I used to love cats. I've had a Siamese cat as a kid named Samantha and a Tabby cat we named Angel. Then, I watched the movie "Sleepwalkers" by Stephen King and became wary of cats and their finicky nature. Then, my brother furthermore told me that cats were the gateway to hell (by this point I had Samantha). Me and my lil cousin did everything we could to get rid of the cat because it started doing crazy things like chasing us and hissing at us. We dropped it off once on the south side of town which is quite a distance from here and she found her way home. After that, we became TERRIFIED. I never knew exactly how I developed my fear, but I just know that it is present whenever I see a cat, especially a Black cat as my grandfather was superstitious and killed Black cats that crossed our path. Even if we were driving down the street and a Black cat ran by, dependent upon which direction it went, my grandfather would nicely park the car and go kill the cat. Pet or not. LOL.

It is terrible that such a movie influence you so much to a dislike of cats. Your grandfather's actions are not in any way funny. It is just sad for black cats and perhaps the people who had those cats as owners. I hopefully will be able to adopt a black cat in my lifetime because I know they get a bad wrap and are often euthanized because of the bad PR they get.

i don't fear cats but i just truly, madly, deeply abhor them. they keep on peeing in the same place and their pee and poop just smell intensely funky. i also don't like how they like to rub themselves on you, like little perverts. i read somewhere that cats have a better sense of self, unlike dogs who need your approval which is probably one of the reasons why more people are draw to dogs. i find dogs easier to live with though i'm not exactly a dog-lover.

The reason that their pee smells is that in the wild cats use urine to mark their territory and if they are house cats hopefully they are peeing in the litterbox consistently! And the rubbing has nothing to do with sexuality. It is also a scent mark from the scent glands in their face. Their rubbing you is just a greeting. The better sense of self is one of the reasons I like cats.
