Work isn't fun. How do people work for hours at a time?

I have trouble understanding this. I am working at my first nine to five job and find that I cannot survive for eight hours doing things that I do not enjoy. How do people do it?

You get kind of used to it. Sad but true. If you are in the wrong field of work it might not get much more fun further on, but you will learn to deal with it!

How do you learn to deal with it? Do you have any strategies?

Hi, jumesbond Welcome to Mylot! Work can be fun if you love what you are doing. Try to see something interesting in your work, be more friendly with your co-workers and surround yourself with nice things. If those things do not work, try to see if you could find another job in an industry that interests you. Cheers!

Hi Rainegurl, thanks for the welcome and thanks for the response. I thought your answer was very good and comprehensive. I actually have decided to change my career because I can't seem to focus at anything I'm doing in this job. I look at the people around me and wonder how they are able to focus every day without their minds shutting off. I guess they do chat a lot, but I don't think chatting works for me. It just feels like another thing that shuts my brain off, and I don't like the way I feel when my mind is off.

Work is enjoyable and fun! I'm 76 and not retired because I Love my work. I am a honey producer and look after 400 colonies of honey bees. I will never retire, because I would die of boredom. Working at a Job you love is the answer. If you don't like your work its time to quit, and find a Job you Love!

You're right, most times work isn't fun. Why do we do it? To give our families what we think they deserve. I work for my husband and the little life growing inside of me, because I want to provide them with everything this world has to offer. I don't want anything to stop them from getting what they want and I want my child to have chances that I never had. Not that I had a bad childhood, far from that I was actually quite fortunate, but I think it's natural for everyone to wish a better life for their children. :) I think what makes work easier is if you try to stay positive about it. Find one thing about your work that you particularly like. For example, I'm a server and I really like meeting new people and getting to talk with the guests that come into the restaurant. For me, that helps make the day a little easier. And when I'm not talking to the guests, I've got some amazing coworkers behind the scenes that I get along with well and it really helps when I know that we can all work well together.

I think you just have to keep looking at the pluss side. In tough economic times like these you just have to be thankful that you have a job at all. You also have to think of the rewards, the pay and just get on with the day to day grind. I was in a 8-6 job for three years and in the end I was just so fed up with the doing the same office job every day that I looked for another job. People do it because they have to, they have financial committments, children mortgages and the bills to pay.

hello jumesbond I guess work is what you make it. If you need to work, you will find a way to "survive" for eight hours. People do it because they need the money. We need to work to contribute to society and survive in life. I sssume you are very young. You might as well get used to working. However, if you hate what you're doing so much, look for another job, or go to school for training in another field.
